In Mexico´s thriving metropolis, UK singer, Sarah Guppy meets Marco Rentería (Jaguares and previously Lila Downs) in jam in a heaving funk venue. There was chemistry on stage, phone numbers were exchanged and Gupster was born.
Growing up on the Jurassic Coast, for Guppy, the question was always, what was on the other side? She arrived in Mexico 10 years ago with underground musical tastes and soon formed her first trip hop/jazz band. Inspired by the immensity and diversity of Mexico, it was easy to write.
Marco Rentería, with a jazz background and an infinite range of musical influences, came up with the idea of producing Guppy ´s songs and started the search for the vital ingredients needed to create Gupster ´s sound in what was to be his debut musical production.
With quirky yet sincere lyrics and melodies at the core, Sarah Guppy and Marco Rentería set out to tell musical tales as diverse and contradictory as the city they live in. Jazz and classical elements were put into the pot along with some cello, vintage synthesizers by Javier Lara and garnished with glitches.
Now, with the finished CD in hand, Gupster has grown into a 14 legged monster, full of surprises and ready to guide you on a journey through unchartered territory.
