"Grrrls Steam with Talent"

“...they were prepared, they were amazing, they were, simply enough, Grrrls With Guitars....as the musical sexists in the room were blown away, those who knew about the Grrrls abilities sat smugly; they knew all along that Grrrls With Guitars are great. Man, what a good show.” - Kamloops This Week

"Audiences bigger for 2nd GWG Tour"

“The fortuitously timed project began before Lilith Fair, before the diva phenomena took hold and with little fore-knowledge that the music Industry would begin to take even the limited interest in female song writers that it has over the last decade.

With the alt-country scene now booming in Vancouver and across the prairies and the renewed opportunity for both newcomers and fans of the artists to see them play in unique settings, “The crowds have been very receptive to the whole idea of us on the stage at the same time, and because it’s a variation on different styles, that seems to keep people interested.”

This kind of stylistic experimentation—not just folk, not just country—has become one of the hallmarks of Grrls With Guitars and is undoubtably one of the reasons behind it’s success.”
- Vue Weekly - Edmonton, AB

"Grrrls do great at The Grind"

“The women display a range of musical styles. McRae and Alexander have a country edge, Davenport and Lennox a melodic pop sound and French an ethereal tone.

“Lennox reminded me a bit of Jann Arden. Her Own Eyes, about being true to your self, was poignant. She also gave a beautiful rendition of Joni Mitchell both Sides Now.

One of Davenport’s songs was She Shines, a terrific piece available on the Grrrls With Guitars compilation CD. Her voice, like Lennox’s, has purity that’s very appealing. French has a smooth, sensual style. Her lyrics are poetic and slightly haunting. The women performed 23 songs in. two sets. They closed both sets with cover tunes, a funky version of Nancy Sinatra’s hit, These Boots Are Made l Walkin, and a knockout take on John Prine’s Angel From Montgomery.

The Grrrls With Guitars will be in Armstrong today and Vernon after that. Check out the show if you can. It’s well worth it”
- Kamloops Daily News

"Grrrls With Guitars Compilation Vol. 1"

Grrrls With Guitars Compilation Vol. 1

A reviewer always approaches a compilation with mixed feelings of wonder and terror. Like the little girl with the curl, such discs offer no inbetween: when they’re good they are very, very good but when they are bad they are aweful.

Thankfully, there’s no mincing words with Grrrls With Guitars, which clearly falls into the former category. A lapsed folkie (Iburnt all my Indifgo Girls albums and swore never again), I was apprehensive the Grrrls might be tooo soft for me, but I needn’t have worried.

The various performers, culled from sessions of the long-running same-name series at the Railway Club, deliver had-edged, experimental, and occasionally sweet slices of song on the 13 lucky tracks.

"Grrrls, Grrrls, Grrrls !"

“I have a dream. In it I travel through the interior of BC in a van with 4 women….The road show entitled 5 Cents a Dance Tour, originates froma monthly women songwriter night hosted by Nadine Davenport at the Railway Club. Now in it’s 6th year, the Grrrls With Guitars evenings have become anticipated events in the tight coastal songwriters community, and have spawned a workshop at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival as well as, last year a CD which gained national recognition ..” - FFWD Weekly - Calgary, AB

GRRRLS WITH GUITARS
Vancouver's Women Singer/Songwriter Showcase

It all started with Nadine Davenport ~ she built a reputation for herself as a Vancouver song-writer and project coordinator. After producing some successful shows Nadine launched Vancouver’s first “all women” songwriters group, “Grrrls With Guitars”.

The Grrrls home fast became the infamous Railway Club where they graced the stage once a month to packed houses and media accolades. Grrrls with Guitars is one of the longest running & most successful songwriter showcases in Vancouver.

From rock & jazz to acoustic pop, bluegrass to alt country, to modern folk the Grrrls have showcased over 500 women songwriters. These ranks include Trish Klein (Po’ Girl), Kinnie Starr, Belinda Bruce, Angela Harris, Leslie Alexander, Kat Wahamaa, Sandy Scofield, Linda McRae, Danielle French, Rae Spoon, Meg Tennant, Marianne Grittani, Nadine Davenport and many, many others.

To date there have been 3 very successful GWG tours throughout Western Canada and showcases at many festivals including the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, The ROCKRGRL Festival in Seattle, Folk On The Rocks in Yellowknife, and Music West.

Grrrls With Guitars Volume 3 will be released this October ('05) - plus both Compilations Vol 1 & 2, will all soon be available & distributed by Maximum Music/Universal.

The Grrrls With Guitars project has produced 2 previous Compilation CD’s; GWG Vol. 1 (1999) and Vol. 2 (2001). Both CD’s have received great reviews and have had positive support from CBC Radio 1 and College Radio. Volume 1 charted at No. 41 on the Campus National Top 50.
