Bio
Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra, GKO, is a potent mix of Afro-Colombian percussion with a Balkan Brass section, choreographies, dance, and audience interaction that have been taking over dance-floors throughout South America, North America and Europe. Audiences live an immersive experience, where music and dance capture body and soul in a liberating and enchanting way.
We offer indoor and outdoor performances as well as interactive street performances and music and dance workshops. We are a big band, but we also tour and offer smaller formats according to needs and budgets.
Described by Ralph Boncy as “(...) one of the most beautiful inventions of modern Montreal” (Voir, Mtl, nov. 13th, 2015) Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra was also granted the Stingray Foundation Rising Star award during their recent Sunfest appearance (London, Ontario July 2016).
Their first album Revuelta Danza Party (Outside and Xango Music Distribution) has been nominated by both the JUNO Academy and ADISQ as best World Music Album of 2015, and the group has twice been voted Montreal’s best “world music” band by CAMUZ in 2015 and 2014.
GKO has played at major festivals in Québec and Canada such as Festivals International d'Été de Québec, Boreal Northern Lights Festival in Sudbury, Sunfest in London, Owen Summerfolk, Mosaiq in Moncton, Festival de Traditions du Monde à Sherbrooke, Nuits d'Afrique à Montréal, Toronto’s Harbour Front Center, and Ashkenaz among many others.
Internationally GKO has toured Austria and Czech Republic (2016), France (2015) and Colombia (2014).
