"Show Review + Setlist + Photos: Julian Casablancas Dances in the Dark at the Pageant, Monday, April 26"

Speaking of Haim, her own band - also called Haim - opened the show admirably, cinching up the small crowd on the Pageant's first floor. Led by the three Haim sisters, Este, Danielle and Alana all play guitar with gusto, wail in mature, expressive voices like they would kill at Linda Perry karaoke and bang out polyrhythms on the drums, their long hair scraping the drums. The sounds built on classics and the performers were fresh and authentic.

After the show eldest sister Este, 23, the band's funny, flirty mouthpiece, explained how Haim linked up with this tour: "Basically, it's nepotism. Danielle was on tour with Jenny Lewis on percussion, and Julian caught their New York show just as he had finished [recording his solo album]." Danielle was recruited for Casablancas' drum line, and the family affair -- Mom runs merch, Dad drives the van -- came along to open. Haim's first album is still in the mixing stage, and Este is finishing up a degree in "music business" at UCLA, but said, "I don't know what I want to do."

She's on the right tour. Whatever musical and professional course his career takes, with the Strokes or on his own, guitars or lasers, Casablancas' solo show seemed like a chance to throw in everything and the kitchen sink, wear a feather in your hair -- and most important, to have fun. - RFT

"Julian Casablancas at the Ogden: One hour, a dozen songs and out"

?

P.S. How sweet is Haim? The five-piece band, led by sisters Danielle, Alana, and Este Haim rocked their little, precious hearts out, highlighted by the final song, a tribal rock out where the three women and the keyboardist abandoned their instruments to all beat on drums. - Denver Westwood Blogs

Bio

Hailing from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California, HAIM is a band of three sisters that began playing music at a very young age. After their parents quit a band they had formed with another couple that played various Club Meds, they decided that it might be fun to just play music together as a family unit. The band put together a set of covers and played everything from country fairs to school fundraisers for about ten years. By the time all three sisters had reached their teens, they collectively started writing songs, and eventually began playing shows in and around Los Angeles. It was not long before the band caught the attention of Jenny Lewis who enlisted Danielle Haim to play guitar and percussion for her on her 2009 tour. It was during the New York City show that Julian Casablancas saw Danielle play, and ultimately asked her to go on tour with him to play guitar and percussion. After hearing HAIM's music, Julian invited HAIM to open for him during his Los Angeles residency, as well as his spring 2010 US tour. After returning from tour, Danielle was then asked to play guitar for Cee-Lo green. While the sisters enjoy playing music with others, they are now focused on using their talents for their own project. They are looking forward to playing Austin, and eventually taking over the world!
