"HAIVYN INTERVIEW"

cut n' paste link: http://www.bigsmilemagazine.com/interview.aspx?IID=157

HAIVYN
By Rick Murder

what are your names and postions in the band? David: Guitar, Styx:Drums, Spade: Bass, Denise: vocals

what is your myspace and website ? www.myspace.com/haivyn101
emailing list: haivyn@ymail.com

where are you based out of? Los Angeles is our homebase and where our rehearsal space is. East Los Angeles to be exact.

how is the support of your local scene? It's really diverse musically, but support of local music is far higher here then the surrounding areas. It's a pocket of rockheads, punkheads, and mariachis which makes it a great location to make noise, so everyone knows who we are. Plus we're centrally located to all the good venues and happenings.

do you have any up coming shows? Actually we don't have anymore booked for the rest of the year. Right now the goal is to finish our CD, so we're rehearsing, writing a couple of new songs and jumping in the studio. We need to focus. Shows get us off course because that's when our A.D.D. kicks in...we find it is just too much fun to perform and forget about putting together a final product. We always list our shows on our myspace so if we get an itch to play we'll post one or via SoCallist.com

do you have an album or ep out? if yes (can you tell us about it) Currently we are on the newest LA ROCKER for LIFE compilation CD put out my Illumna Records that will be available through them. The Jazz Song is featured on it. We had our a 6 song EP where we completed a short run only now it's not available. We actually sold out but we'll do another short run to have on hand for kits. Our goals is to complete the full length then push it through the digital music sites and distribution channels. We have alot going on here so we expect this to go well once the ball gets rolling.

where can the public get it? To be announced by Big Smile Magazine we hope. :) One place for sure is CD BABYand off our myspace webstore we're setting up.

how long have you been a band for? 7 years Haivyn has around. Actually 6 because we took a year off and when through some internal changes. But...yes I know what you're wondering 'And all that time no full-length CD?' Correct. We had about 38 songs, all we did was write. I think we were more engrossed in writing new songs in different styles and figuring ourselves out then anything else during most of that time. It did us a lot of good when it comes to differentiating ourselves from alot of music out there.

have you changed any members since then? Yes. Bass player and Drummer changed. Our old drummer was not physically up for it any longer due to health reasons, so for a short time he played keys but finally decided to take a different path and have a family. We're really happy for him. Shortly after this, our previous bass player chose to go back to school and we really thought the band might have come to an end but die-hard fans wouldn't let that happen. In fact one "fan" became our bass player, Spade, and after trying out a number of drummers we found a pretty damn good fit, Styx. The previous members were a blast and we had a lot of fun with them. One still comes to our shows to support. Anyhow...Haivyn lives. Suddenly we grew faster in shorter period of time than we ever had in the past.

is it hard being a band in LA one of the top music centerals in the world? Its unbelievable. Unbelievably wonderful and unbelievably horrible all at once. Not only is it hard because of the number of bands competing for a good show and a little limelight, but it's difficult being the girl fronted rock band. One thing I've learned and love is that even though there are alot of great L.A. bands, HAIVYN has that little something different to offfer both musically and visually. There's a stigma with girl fronted rock bands and I actually get to see that barrier breaking first hand. When some intimidated cholo looking dude comes up and says
'damn girl that was f%$ing tight. You rocked it' I get all warm and fuzzy inside! LOL I think I can play hard enough for the boys to enjoy too. I know I certainly try. We're all just enjoying ourselves and hoping everyone else is too.

do you feel that you are always struggling? Of course, but we forget about the struggle when we peform or write a new song. We only think about it at times like this. It really is a exhausting to push your music as an independant but what keeps us going is the love of playing and belief in the music.

are shows hard to find shows, and when you do what do you do to book them? Nope. shows are easy to find. A really good one just requires contacting the right people. Thanks to the Internet anyone can do this - we do. Generally, any band can put on a show. We put on one for a full summer. It was Band Wagon Tuesdays at this sweet place called AZUL. It was amazing and so fun oh my gOD! All you need is pick out a good location for a venue and - Big Smile Magazine

"FEMMEROCK REVIEW + INTERVIEW"

FemmeRock CD REVIEW

..HAiVyN JUST RECIEVED A KIK'ASS REVIEW FROM AN ITALIAN WEBZINE CALLED "FEMMEROCK"

we also did an Interview for FemmeRock...click here:

http://femmerock. altervista. org/interviews/haivyn. html

Feel free to cut and paste original CD review to your favorite translation site...

or HERE'S A ROUGH TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH .
NOTE: small notations is us filling in minor f.y.i.'s....

Los angelini active now by a lot 'of years, Haivyn gives us with this full-length eleven pleasant songs (plus a curious ghost-track). The quality of the recording is not perfect, especially in pieces tagged as "done in the attic," but this is a band that although autoproduce, we can not make a fault. The thing that jumps immediately to the attention is the fact that the strength of the band is undoubtedly the grintosa and versatile voice of singer Denise, which alternates smoothly languid moments and "lounge" to others in which the voice turning arrochisce in a resolute panther blues. The sound is beautiful groovoso, and the mood changes often passing by threatening to scanzonato.
There is undoubtedly a lot of variety: sometimes recall the muscular rock of Juliette & the Licks (julet lewis's band) or the groove of Red Hot, then throw in atmospheres decidedly oriented nu-metal (Kontamination) or grunge, without neglecting the most cautiously or psychedelic trip-hop. If this lively assortment of genres has the advantage of not tiring the listener, but also lacks of disorientarlo: Sometimes has the impression that there are some 'too many more styles that blended together with one another, and that the band will not know where to go to obtaining.
But, I repeat, from the viewpoint of pleasure of listening, this is a good disc, but a band that has yet (last part says something like "to find their distinct style/sound" lost in translation for some reason)

"QUEEN MARY SHOW + CD REVIEW"

So Cal Rock Revolution at the Queen Mary
By The Bear

So this past Saturday (the 16th) I went down to Long Beach to see AHL's So-Cal Rock Revolution at the Queen Mary, and I have to say it was quite an event. Even permanently moored and set up in an enclosed moat, the Queen Mary is still an impressive ship, and still leads a very productive life, serving as hotel, tourist attraction, and performance venue. Only two of the six stages were actually on the ship, but even throughout the rest of the performance area that ship is an imposing backdrop. I got there around 11:30 AM and scouted the area out. There were six stages, and about 60 bands. The one problem with big festivals like this is that you can't see everyone, although I did manage to see a lot of bands throughout the day.
I decided to leave after Zebrahead's set, however I didn't quite make the clean getaway I'd been hoping for. As I headed toward the entrance I had to pass stage 2, where Haivyn was playing, and, liking what I was hearing, I decided to stay and watch them. The lead singer of Haivyn is one of those loud female rockers who follow the mold of Patti Smith and Joan Jett. She has a strong, hard-rock presence on stage, and the whole band rocks pretty hard too. They were a good ending to the day.

AND NOW BIG SMILE'S HAIVYN CD REVIEW BY RICK MURDER

Haivyn

I have actually had a chance to see these folks rock out, and wow they put on a rad
live performance. so before i even get to the cd, i thought i would mention to go see them for sure. Now down to work, the cd is very well mastered and clean sounding, not like it was made in a garage. The musical aspect is very well spread out. They go from rockish trashy beats to trippy rhythmic beats. Denise as the the lead vocals shreads with pitches familiar to Janis Joplin, Brody, and Joan Jet, but she still manages to stand out from the rest. The band also likes to throw in some classic feel like late 70's and early 90's, and current musical styles, then they wrap it up with a nice little bow, and slams it into your face. If this cd doesn't get you moving via in the car, in your room, in the shower, then you are dead.

would i reconmend it?
hell yea!!!!!!!
see them live?
yes sir
would i reconmend to
buy the cd?

"DistantThunderRadio-Cd Review"

I like to think that the bands that send me their CD is kind of like a thank you for playing their stuff on my show, but in this case with reviewing Haivyn's CD it's entirely different. I can sit here and pretend that I know a whole bunch of shit on the vocal work that Denise performs on this album. I could also pretend that I know the riffs and cords Dave is playing on the guitar, Spade’s bass work that overwhelmed the tracks on this CD, as well as Styx on drums is really going to move me(to say something smart). But for anybody that knows me, knows that when it comes to Metal and good Rock and Roll I go with my gut. Haivyn does not owe me a thanks, I owe them a thank you for giving me the privilege to hear them taking great old fashioned rock and roll and punk to a new level. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that listening to this album, I felt honored listening. If there is such a thing as a category that list bull shit from 1-10, Haivyn is going for the gold. Let’s go for 200, they kick ass. I was totally not disappointed when I received these 11 tracks. On this Cd that shattered my fuckin head. This CD kicks ass. Definitely put it on your list. - Diamond Sam Lavalerie
