Bio

Hakea is a laptop duo that blends IDM (Team Doyobi, Bitstream) and classic German electronic (Klaus Schulze, Manuel Gottsching) influences to forge oddly attractive and ominous compositions. Hakea makes emotional music pushing boundaries of synthesis without losing its visceral edge.

Hakea have been active in the Seattle electronic music community since late 2003, regularly performing at venues, parties, and events. Hakea performed at the inaugural Decibel Festival in Seattle, the Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival, various clubs, art venues and a three-mile long abandoned train tunnel.

Hakea is Matt Carthum and Matt Turpin. Both are native to the Seattle area. Matt Carthum comes from a background primarily focused on DJing ambient and noise music, while Matt Turpin has had a lifelong interest in the extremes of analog and digital synthesis. The two shared a house on Capitol Hill for several years, working together in a basement studio where the Hakea sound developed. Together, they developed a process of creating their music on various hardware devices, followed by manipulating these recordings in software. Each of them would then email files back and forth for further changes until a final arrangement was achieved. The duo recreates this process live, in performances that can surprise with even them with variations in form, content, and timing that keep the material fresh.

In 2006 Matt Turpin became instrumental in the creation on Memex Records (the electronic imprint of Clickpop Records). This new label features electronic music from the thriving Pacific Northwest electronic scene, encompassing a wide array of artists from Seattle, Portland, Bellingham and beyond. In September of 2007 Memex Records will release the self-titled full-length “Hakea” album as a CD and digital download.
