Rock of Independence
July 02, 2008 | 03:14 PM

For those of you who haven't had enough flag-waving yet and are craving more patriotic themed events, you're in luck. Rock of Independence, July 4 at the Bus Stop Theatre (6pm, $7) is a night of metal and hard rock, with King Ruckus from Moncton ("groovy metal"), Surefire Machine (Toronto) ("hard hitting anthemic rockabilly"), Badseed Overdrive ("super chunky riffy metal band"), Broken Ohms singer Peter Hubley is playing an acoustic set, Janus ("cultish metal band") and Halcyon ("ethereal high emotional folk rock band"). (All band descriptions thoughtfully provided by Brett Campaigne from Janus). The show, booked originally by Heather Doran of Halcyon, was "booked as a fluke but when it came to coming up for a theme for the show it was appropriate that it fell on independence day." Says Campaigne. Janus are currently working on a self produced demo and planning a show for August 16th with Winnipeg's gothic metal troupe Nocturnal Divinity. Personally, I am glad people still consider themes necessary for shows. It's a rare breed of show, but I do appreciate it. - The Coast

"Simply put...amazing"

Simply put...amazing
Right as the song began I thought it sounded an awful lot like Pink Floyd's "Speak to Me/Breathe" off of their album 'Darkside of the Moon'. Yet it sounded different, and it was both soothing and exciting, the recording is of great quality and the performance is equal in greatness. I wasn't expecting the vocals that came out, but to say the least it was a good surprise. This vocalist has a great voice, kind of like Linda Perry from the band 4 Non Blondes (who happens to be one of my favorite singers, so extra points there.) The lyrics are great, everything meshes together nicely, there isn't a weak point of the song. The music crescendos appropriately at points and refocuses your attention, even though there isn't really any need due to the song never crossing into the boring area. Not only is this by far the best song I've reviewed on this site but it has also become one of my new favorite songs period. I hope this band has more gold where this song came from because I am hungry for more. Much more.
