Haley & Michaels: Polished Performers Who Appeal To Lovers of Multiple Musical Genres

Material: Haley and Michaels are a newly formed pop/rock duo comprised of seasoned singer- songwriters, Shannon Haley and Ryan Michaels. Their music reflects a mutual Nashville residency with gentle hints of the country genre resounding in the harmonies and effected guitar riffs. The pair’s songs possess light lyrics, full of familiar observations about love and relationships.
The radio-ready, soon to be first single, “Price I Pay,” brilliantly showcases the tight, well-blended harmonies that are close to constant in their music.

Musicianship: While both Haley and Michaels play acoustic guitar, the musical focal point of the duo is their singing. Haley’s UCLA opera trained voice emits well-controlled power. When she belts it is effortless and impressive, especially when juxtaposed by a lighter pianissimo use of her high register, as heard in “Hate Myself for Loving You.” Michaels adds an edge to the duo’s sound with his rock-oriented baritone, which has no problem keeping up with Haley’s powerhouse pipes. For the most part, the melody and instrumental lines are simple and straightforward, leaving room for their beautiful blend to be showcased.

Performance: The duo performed a heartfelt set of mostly original songs, trading off melody lines. Both are polished performers who interacted well with the audience and with each other. It wasn’t until mid-set that Haley demonstrated the striking range of her voice, which pushed the performance to the next level. Meanwhile, the band shined in “Something’s Missing,” with its more prominent drum and bass lines, adding a harder sound in contrast to “Slow Burn,” which was performed by just Haley and Michaels to close out the show.

Summary: Haley and Michaels are a pair of skillful singer-songwriters who complement each other well. Their ability to appeal to lovers of multiple music genres, and an incredible vocal blend, have laid the groundwork for what promises to be a successful duo whose stagecraft will likely improve with each performance.

Bio

Shannon Haley and Ryan Michaels, known as Haley & Michaels, are an award winning country duo based in Nashville. They recently released their debut song, “The Price I Pay”, which is currently airing on TNN (The Nashville Network), TCN (The Country Network), and featured on CMT.com.

When the two first met in Nashville, they discovered that they grew up only a few miles away from each other in a small town in Northern California, but never knew it. It turns out there had been multiple failed attempts to introduce the two before they actually connected. They finally met through a guitar player (who had managed to be in both of their solo bands, simultaneously, across the country).

The duo started turning heads with a heartfelt cover of Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted,” that Taste of Country called “an equally as yearning, aching and lovely alternate version of a very familiar track.” The music video for their debut single, “The Price I Pay,” was directed by Annie Price (Faith Hill’s “This Kiss”).

Haley & Michaels recently played a residency at Nashville’s legendary venue 12th & Porter in February 2013, playing four shows on the same stage where Keith Urban, Vince Gill, Jon Bon Jovi, and more have played.

They are currently in the studio working on their first full-length album with producer Josh Leo. The album will be available later in 2013.
