Halfbeak

BandAlternativeSinger/Songwriter

Halfbeak is the music of prolific Melbournian-born singer-songwriter Tim Gum: an excercise in maximum simultaneous happiness and sadness. Herein lies forests full of great songs with humour and heart, described by some as "The Kinks with soul" and by others as "greatly disturbing but very true",

Biography

For more than a decade, prolific Melbournian multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Tim Gum has been busy crafting hundreds of songs with the one purpose: maximum simultaneous hapiness and sadness. It seemed the logical thing to do. Music is at heart an emotional beast after all.

After much persistent insistance and pressure from inside-world friends, in 2012 Tim Gum has deemed it time to set these songs free.

Halfbeak music is a combination of Bukowski-inspired lyrics with heart and humour, and the dreamy, noisy, beautiful post-punk, shoegaze flavoured guitars of James Pratt.

2012 was a busy year in the recording factory for Halfbeak, with the release of four EPs, including debut EP "Killing One Bird With Two Stones", now available on itunes and Spotify. The recordings and performances have been uniformly well-received, and garnered the label: "Kinks with added soul".

If you are on the prowl for new music with heart, soul, originality and consequence... welcome to the Halfbeak song factory.

Lyrics

For Anon.

Written By: Tim Gum

Many have tried and never will know,
And you'll curse it if you let it stray but you're helpless and slow,
It fills without warning and is wasted on those,
Who are staring right through ya to hearts that are closed,
Through Paris and London with their streets that collide,
With a million warm faces with their sad darting eyes,
Through the smokestacks of history and the rapids of yer life,
Is the true love between two that never arrives.

So sing with me friend,
Put your arm in my hand,
If we never know how it feels then that's just how it is,
We'll drink for the lucky and salute all the rest,
Who wander through living without knowing their best.

To the beautiful and crooked it's all just the same,
Where one is the poison the other's the chain,
The weak ones they settle and the little ones grow thin,
And there's others who lay hiding, they never peer in,
And in fathers and mothers through all of their lives,
Is the true love between two that never arrives.

So sing with me sister,
Put your arm in my hand,
If we never know how it feels then that's just how it is,
We'll drink for the lucky and salute all the rest,
Who wander through living without knowing their best.

For me I am broken, I'm shattered and numb,
I'm outstanding and restless and useless and dumb,
But I know I have seen it, and I'm glad it exists,
And I'll keep warm knowing we're all part of this.

New People

Written By: Tim Gum

I like new people,
And I meet them on the street
I like new people,
Come on, let's meet,
Smiling faces, they get so tired in the sun,
Raindrop patters on a whole new kingdom,

There's nothing between us yet,
There's nothing that's gone wrong,
Nothing I can't remember,
And everthing is still so strong,
And I like new people,
Come out with me a while,
And i don't know you,
And i've never seen you cry,

And we go out tonight,
And of course I can make you smile,
And I could never hurt you,
Or force one tear to your eye,
Or start to crumble,
All that you tried so hard to start,
From the last one you let smash your little heart,

And I like new lovers,
There's nothing I've done wrong,
Because with a new lover,
Everything is just so strong,
And I haven't broken you,
And I haven't tripped you up,
Yeah you don't know me,
And you can still stand up,
And please don't know me,
And I'm not an honest man,
Yeah please don't know me,
For as long as you fucking can,

Come on baby, give me a smile
Dry your eyes, we go out tonight
And tell me your stories, and I'll tell you mine
And we'll try so hard to smile.
