"Half Chinese"

'I didn’t know what to expect from Half Chinese: to me, they were that band I’d always meant to see but never had the right chance, so when they started playing exciting, mesmerizing avant-garde rock music I knew I’d been seriously missing out. There’s so much about Half Chinese that’s fascinating that it’s hard to discern just what makes them so enjoyable to listen to: whether it’s the double-drum-kit ratatat, jazzy musings or crescendoing, joyous instrumentation, or the humble, nearly-monotone poetic lyrics, it was impossible to absorb everything at once.
Built out of what seems like every corner of the East Van musical community, borrowing members from Slight Birching and SSRIs to name a few, Half Chinese were jaw-droppingly exciting to listen to. This isn’t the kind of music people usually associate with Vancouver, but it damn well ought to be. The crowd parted ways taking cover under freshly-minted Half Chinese LPs.' - Discorder

"Show Review"

'I saw Half Chinese play last night and was impressed by the way they played with the predictability of song structures, and lovely lovely dynamics. To top it off, they ended a song with a lyric that went something like “want a show, you want a show?”. This has been one of my *dreams* (I’m not kidding)… to get the audience to think about why they’re there in the first place, and whether it’s the performance + coolness or the music that matters. Eff man… I wrote a song last week with the same concern in mind! Just that it wasn’t even half as close to being as good as their take. Mine was just drones and fingerpicking for 7 mins with “Are you going to take me seriously” being said in consistent whispers. !!I’m so happy, oh man!' - http://tipofthesilverdream.tumblr.com/

"Editor's Note"

.This month you can also get to know this year’s Shindig winners—part of their prize is coverage in our pages. The technical metal masters, Hidden Towers, took it this year and Scott Lyon catches up with them on page 14. Half Chinese (page 16) and Kidnap Kids! (page 25) took second and third places respectively, which is interesting because the bands share a member: the talented Enzio Verster.' - Discorder

"Shindig Semifinals #1"

'Next up were Half Chinese. Before they even started they asked to have their guitar volume turned up. That really set the tone for their set. They started fast and played hard all the way through. For the most part the vocals were unintelligible, but it suits the music. Their guitar playing is really quite something to listen to Half Chinese are perfect at what they do. They get four white American Apparel deep V-necks outta five, as well as a berth in the upcoming finals.' - Discorder
