Biography

Lights, camera, action, here we go...

With passion and originality, Halfpenny Marvel burst onto the local Chicago scene in 2006 when members Mike Kramer (guitar, vocals), Brian Porn (guitar), Brendan Heneghan (Drums), and Brent Holan (Bass) felt the irresistible pull of an intangible musical connection.

Over the course of several months, the band toiled away into the wee small hours of each sunday night, propelled by their passion to rock. With Sunday pie night, and the local Chicago bears '06 wining season to inspire them on, Halfpenny Marvel proceed to craft a unique musical voice, adding 3 parts rock/pop, spiced with 1 part Jazz, 1 part Blues, 1 part swing, and not forgetting to mix vigorously.

Above all, Halfpenny Marvel's music is filled drama. Each song is crafted with the intent to make you laugh, cry, turn your head, and always make you think. Trying desperately to avoid cliché, their colorful and whitty brand of lyrics are strewn with metaphorical musings which challenge and poke fun at struggles we all face.

Each member of the band brought a thoroughly different set of skills and influence to the mix. With a degree in Music Composition, Kramer graduated college with a portfolio of orchestrations, new music compositions, and a good 25 film scores. Finding inspiration in romantics like Chopin and Beethoven, Kramer knows that “Passion transcends style. You know, whether it's a Sonata or the Blues, people connect with music because of the emotion in it.” Fresh out of school with a minor in Jazz studies, Brian Porn's utterly unique guitar playing continually pushes every aesthetic quality of the band to not just settle on what's already been done. Drawing from legends like John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Porn embodies that spirit of innovation, improvisation, and soul into his performing.

While each member has experience playing in bands, Heneghan is truly the seasoned veteran of the group. Drumming in a wide array of groups from Ska to Metal, Heneghan's exceptional beats are instantly recognizable. “Drumming is my letter of exemption from being too loud, too crazy, or too anything.” Heneghan continues, “Music is a non-negotiable force in my life, it's like breathing or going to the bathroom.” The final ingredient to the bands recipie for rock Holan, the rock.

After writing a eclectic collage of tunes, the band began building their own studio in the spirit of DIY, and produced and recorded their upcoming debut, “Spectacle and Show.” From the epic strings in “Forget it,” to the bittersweet musings of “Elastic Girl,” or the rockin' your face off guitars of “Hum Along,” Spectacle and Show will keep listeners glued to their seats for coming distractions.

Emerging from the confines of their dimly lighted studio, Halfpenny Marvel is squinting in the bright light of great potential, and they are poised and ready to rock.

Lyrics

Spectacle & Show

Written By: Halfpenny Marvel

Bright lights and loud sounds
Have a peculiar effect
They lure in the viewer mostly when they least suspect
I want to break free
From this addictive pursuit
That's brought me nothing
And a colorful array of meaninglessness to boot

Fill me up with another
Round of senseless drama
Take your seats please for coming distractions

CHORUS:
Lights, camera, action here we go
Hey hey hey, Ho-o-o
Somewhere deep inside you knows
Hey hey hey, it's just spectacle and show

Lies and deception
Have a remarkable way
Of filling seats and selling treats at your fictitious play
I won't 'admit one' to this ridiculous ruse
That's brought me nothing
But a barrel full of lyrics here to sing these blues

Fill me up with another
Round of senseless drama
Take your seats please for coming distractions

CHORUS:
Lights, camera, action here we go
Hey hey hey, Ho-o-o
Somewhere deep inside you knows
Hey hey hey, it's just spectacle and show

BRIDGE:
No one knows why we draw closer
Something in the way it glows
Mesmerizing misdirection
All just spectacle and show

CHORUS:
Lights, camera, action here we go
Hey hey hey, Ho-o-o
Somewhere deep inside you knows
Hey hey hey, it's just spectacle and show

Readymade

Written By: Halfpenny Marvel

She's readymade, made to order
Made to make you think twice
About what she says she really loves, WAIT -
No, what she positively likes
Unequivocally sure of momentary thought
Like a vacillating story strewn with incongruent thoughts
Nothing's for sure, nothing's nailed down in its place
But that won't stop me from chasing this line of thought
To eventually retrace the perfectly logical explanation behind
What seems to be so obviously clear in her mind

CHORUS:
Everything is a contextual thing
Nothing has meaning unframed
Everything is a contextual thing
Who knows what she means...

Frustrating, captivating, consequently agitating
I'm hoodwinked, bamboozled again
But it's all part of the dance
I tiptoe, rock step, repeat
I'm doing my best to anticipate her moves
But I always seem to be behind the beat
And stepping on her feet

CHORUS:
Everything is a contextual thing
Nothing has meaning unframed
Everything is a contextual thing
Who knows what she means...

BRIDGE:
But I need you to know
I wouldn't change a thing

CHORUS:
Everything is a contextual thing
Nothing has meaning unframed
Everything is a contextual thing
Who knows what she means...

Cold Side of the Pillow

Written By: Halfpenny Marvel

When life feels like a comprise
Just a disappointment on a list
I take a breath and close my eyes
and remind myself that I'm an optimist

When all you send are angry words
And all I feel like sending is a fist
I laugh it off as just absurd
'Cause after all, I am a pacifist

CHORUS:
If hope is built on nothing more than innocence
I hope we haven't stripped it all away
If growing up is staring down another day
Let me sleep, oh let me find
The cold side of the pillow

We're quick to judge the young at heart
But what has age exactly done for us
A wrinkle here some wisdom there
We're oh so self assured and serious

It's funny how the more we know
The less we seem to really understand
Is this ignorance or innocence
Does having faith make me less of a man?

CHORUS:
If hope is built on nothing more than innocence
I hope we haven't stripped it all away
If growing up is staring down another day
Let me sleep, oh let me find
The cold side of the pillow

BRIDGE:
My sweetest dream, I can't recall
I've been asleep to long to notice this at all
My sweetest dream, wrapped up inside
Painted pristine, like nothing you have seen before
Like nothing you have seen before....
