Halle & The Jilt

Halle & The Jilt

New York City, New York, USA
BandBluesPop

Imagine sitting in the front seat of your Dad's Chevy station wagon, listening to the oldies station, but like, now - and you have pretty much nailed it. Modern Motown with a twist of pop, blues and country.

Biography

Halle Petro is a brooklyn based songwriter and vocalist, who executive produced and self-release her debut record, Lucky You (February 2011), eleven original tracks which mix and match an unprecedented sound of jazz and country, blues, rock, pop and soul, pulled together by Petro's powerful vocal presence.

Ms. Petro wrote lyrics and music, then further developed music and sound with collaborator and pianist Karen Dryer. With influence drawn from artists such as Otis Redding, Patty Griffin, and Stevie Nicks to name a few, it was sitting in the front seat of her Dad’s station wagon and listening to Motown as a little girl that widely shaped her music.

In addition to songwriting, Ms. Petro has appeared in theatrical recordings, regional theater, commercials and once on Saturday Night Live. Favorite roles included Annie in the world premiere of the musical The Burnt Part Boys at Barrington Stage Company, and the Drama Desk Nominated Off-Broadway production of Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen's Fugitive Songs. With her band, Ms Petro has toured New England, the Midwest, West Coast, and in November 2011 was featured as part of the Powerhouse Emerging Artist Series at Boston's famed Liberty Hotel. She has played several New York clubs such as CIty Winery and The Living Room, Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles and the famed Yoshi’s in San Francisco opening for Jill Sobule.

The LA Examiner says "Halle &The Jilt is a breath of fresh air." Cleveland NPR Radio show "Around Noon" with host Dee Perry, says the songs on the CD are "some really lovely music ... it catches the ear right from the first few notes and continues all the way through." The Boston Phoenix says "her self-released debut album ... shows an artist with a unique musical innocence and lack of snobbery, one not afraid to mix her fun, curious spirit with Broadway's trademark crispness." The NY Daily News hails her as a "group that draws from blues, folk, rock and jazz influences for a richly unique sound."

Lorimer Street

Written By: Halle Petro

lorimer Street
trains runnin' underneath
taking you home away from me
bringing you home

I hope you think of me enough when you pass
how what we had was not enough to last
but you don't even matter enough to think of anymore

southside arrow leads the way
people pass outside
i'm on display
hiding from the world beneath my feet
lorimer street

across the road
both lights on full of hope
hearing your voice outside my window
is bringing me home

you took off your hat to stay
but a smile like that can't hide the things you'd say
my body in the window frame and i
can taunt you just as well

southside arrow leads the way
you stand outside
i'm on display
hiding from the world beneath my feet
lorimer street

i'm going home
i'm going home

southside arrow pleads to stay
standing alone
i'm on my way
where the tiles in the sign are lined up neat
lorimer street

New Shoes

Written By: Halle Petro

when I wear my shoes I wear em to the ground
Anything left behind never will be found
you think you hold the key to love
you're still comin' around
if you could wear my shoes you'd know what i'm talking about
hey

some people walk these streets alone
and don't notice a thing
spend their money just to break their hearts
and then nothin
nothin remains
lord know i've known a few but you
keep returnin' again
but then i walk these streets alone and am never the same
hey

til i saw you standing next to her
before you looked at me
though it makes me cry
i will never let you see
hoping you pass by
and that you never notice me
hopin one day i feel love and set you free

i won't find my way back you
i'd rather be alone
to walk in my new shoes

when I wear my shoes I wear em to the ground
Anything left behind never will be found
you think you hold the key to love
you'll never come around
if you could wear my shoes you'd know what i'm talking about

What I Ask For

Written By: Halle Petro

I am getting what I ask for
now my crazy's coming out
wondering what you were thinking
getting back
exactly what I thought

I can't keep away from you
one step forward, four steps back
to whisper endless dirty thoughts
the way i did before
it got complicated

love's what i thought you were
before i knew you
im not gonna hurt so you can feel
my whispers will not fall on undeserving ears

why should i wait for you to say that this is real

hurt me again so i feel something
not the memory of you
and when i leave it won't be easy
til i forget what i'm holding on to

love's what i thought you were
before i knew you
im not gonna hurt so you can feel
my whispers will not fall on undeserving ears

why should i wait for you to say that this is real

I am getting what I ask for
I am getting what I ask for
I am getting what I ask for
Now i am
now I am
Now I am

getting what i ask for
getting what i ask for

Someday

Written By: Halle Petro

Monday Monday
and i wake up again
Tuesday, Wednesday
feels so hopeless but then
THursday Thursday
Its so happy to say
cause its closer to you
ooo

Friday Friday
How can I pass the day
and int he evening
I'm simply waiting to say
that when the night comes
i close my eyes to go sleep
cause i'm restless to dream of you

Morning, stick with what i'm stuck
saturday lasts long as I watch the clock
but i know my dreams are real
cause someday, someday you'll come
and someday i'll love you.

when i'm working
its the most i can do
to keep from thinking
when i get to be home with you
and at a party
surrounded by all my friends
feels so lonesome without you right there

with your good lovin
oh
it makes me afraid
i'll lose this feelin
so i hope that it never ends
and when the night comes
i'll close my eyes to go sleep
cuase i'm restless to dream of you

my friends are tired to hear me talk
of long nights, and times that seem so dark
but i know my dreams are real
cause someday, someday you'll come
and someday i'll love you
someday i'll love you
someday i'll love you
someday i do
someday i'll love you
someday i'll love you
someday i'll love you
someday i do
i do
i do
(someday I'll say I do)
