In the legacy of such great mandolinists as Jacob do Bandolim, Joel Nascimento and Armandinho Macedo, the young Hamilton de Holanda, born in 1976, is revolutionizing the emblematic instrument of choro, the bandolim, to which he added a fifth double string (for a total of 10 vs. 8) and on which he developed a thorough polyphonic playing technique, especially in solo, as well as an enriched timbral and percussive palette. His capacity for invention is endless and the sound he works out from his 10-string bandolim is powerful and precise. He is a genuine master.

He was born in Rio but moved at a very young age to Brasilia. He benefited both from a stimulating musical ambiance in his family and an in-depth academic training. Very precociously known thanks to his superb duo with his brother Fernando César on 7-string guitar, Dois de Ouro, Hamilton de Holanda imposed himself very quickly as A Nova Cara do Velho Choro, i.e. the new face of old choro – the title of one of their best albums, dedicated to the repertoire of choro classics.

Considered as one of the greatest virtuosos of bandolim of all times, Hamilton de Holanda is also one the most interesting composers of choro today. In his latest album, produced by Torcuato Mariano, Música das Nuvens e do Chão (Label Velas, to be released in France by November 2004), where he brilliantly performs works of greats creators beyond the strict borders of the universe of choro – like Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal and Astor Piazzolla, he moves away from the traditional style, with a more jazz-oriented accompaniment: Daniel Santiago on guitar - Toninho Horta, Carlos Malta, Guinga... - André Vasconcellos on bass - Fernanda Abreu, Leo Gandelman, Djavan... - and Márcio Bahia – exceptional drummer of Hermeto Pascoal - while retaining the expressiveness of the great choroes, i.e. the interpreters of choro.

Hamilton’s charisma and communicative enthusiasm on stage, his flawless playing and his sophisticated creativity make him one of the most remarkable musicians of the new generation of performers and composers of choros.

"NOVAMAG - France Avril 2003"

Bio

Born in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, he goes as a young child to the capital, Brasilia, where his musician father José Américo gives him for his fifth birthday a bandolim, the Brazilian mandolin: he has found is way.

Today, at 27, after studying and practicing bandolim for 22 years, Hamilton de Holanda is a recognized musician in Brazil. His musical personality takes its sources in both classical music and jazz and Popular Brazilian Music. He is characterized by precocity and adaptability, and feels as comfortable with a symphony orchestra as alone onstage with his bandolim. Hamilton de Holanda is obviously part of the family of today’s great Brazilian performers.

In 1982, he launches with his brother Fernando César the band Dois de Ouro (the Golden Two), a name assigned by the percussionist Pernambuco do Pandeiro. His professional future is taking shape and Hamilton is soon considered as a great bandolim performer by such musicians as the flutist Altamiro Carrilho. As Dois de Ouro is invited by various Brazilian venues and television channels, he gets ardent recognition from the public for his sensitivity and dexterity in performing choro, the style dubbed the jazz of Brazil.

Hamilton, not content with being a prominent performer of the street-style choro, Hamilton takes guitar and violin courses at the Music School of Brasilia and get his composition diploma from the Brasilia University. This makes him the first bandolim player to compose a concerto for symphony orchestra and bandolim, which he performed as the soloist with the Symphony orchestra of the Claudio Santoro National Theatre and the Brasilia Symphony Orchestra.

In 1995, aged 19, he wins the Performance prize of the second Choro Festival in Rio de Janeiro, the birthplace of this style.

He records with Dois de Ouro his first CD, Destroçando a macaxeira, which is highly praised by the critics and the public alike. Dois de Ouro also records A Nova Cara do Velho Choro (1998) (distributed by Jazzvalley.com), and Dois de Ouro (2000).

In 2001, Hamilton records the CD Luz das Cordas with the guitarist Marco Pereira. This album is lauded by several critics as the best recording of Brazilian instrumental music of the year 2001. The same year, he also records the album Abre Alas with his band Brasilia Brasil, an innovation in the choro idiom.

Hamilton has already been featured in Austria, France, South Africa, Turkey and Venezuela, and has been a guest star in the Free Jazz Festival 2000 in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

In December 2001, for the Icatú Music Award, Hamilton competes with the cream of Brazilian performers of both academic and improvised music, pianists, guitarists, violinists and clarinetists. He wins the Icatú Award in both categories, which earns him a fellowship at the Cité des Arts in Paris until February 2003. Naturally, he takes advantage of this stay to build a bridge with the old continent.

In January 2002, he completes his first solo CD, Hamilton de Holanda, released in France in 2003 (produced by Gravadora Velas). In this album, Hamilton puts his performer’s talent at the service of some of the gems of the Brazilian repertoire, like Tom Jobim’s Boto, Egberto Gismonti’s Baião Malandro, and Jacob do Bandolim’s Vibrações.

In Brazil, the CD is a success, and Hamilton and his quartet tour the whole country. Hamilton comes to Europe twice to perform in the Satellit’Café in Paris, in the Festival Au Son des Mandolines in Ajaccio, and in the Théâtre de Verdure in Nice.

In December of 2003, the Hamilton de Holanda Quartet recorded their second album, also for the label Gravadora Velas, in Gilberto Gil’s & Liminha’s studios in Rio de Janeiro, with the producer Torcuato Mariano. This album is distributed by Tangará/Discmedi in Europe.
Hamilton de Holanda’s quartet performed for the first time in Europe at the Satellit’Café in Paris, then in various festivals in France and Italy including the XVth Nuits de la Guitare in Patrimonio, Juillet Musical in Nice, Jazz & Wine in Montalcino, Itinerario Brasile in Rome, Itinerare Folk in Trento, SambaFest in Trieste, Itinerari Acustici in Pistoia, Au Son des Mandolines in Ajaccio, and Paleariza in Reggio di Calabria.
Hamilton de Holanda also performed solo, and in trio with bassist Natallino Neto and percussionist Zé Luis Nascimento at the Festival des Granges in Laimont, Meuse.

On October 10, 2004, Hamilton de Holanda, along with clarinettist Paulo Sérgio Santos and Trio Madeira Brasil, played the Roda de Choro organised by the Direction of Music of National network Radio France in the studio Charles Trenet, for the “Figures du maestro” weekend series. The concert was broadcast on France Musiques on October 22, 2004 and was featured twice more in Marseille and in Aubais, Gard.

On October 28 – 30, 2004, Hamilton ran three half-day choro masterclasses during the festival "Les Mandolines de Lunel", and gave a concert consisting of a solo first part, then a duo with U.S
