"The Zoo Cd launch, Thur march 15"

Following act hanabi are definately a strange animal, yet infinately enjoyable. Seemingly blending standard rock instrumentation with saxaphones, trumpet, xylophone and keys, the female-fronted group play a set full of jazz, folk and indie elements, keeping fans enthralled. The rather diminutive lead singer Anita belts out the songs with abundant enthusiasm, smiling non-stop throughout the entire set. With acoustic rock touches in the vein of Sarah Blasko combined with indie sensibilities, dual female/male vocals a la Straylight Run and a cute and innocent factor reminiscent of Architecture in Helsinki, Hanabi hit so many right notes that their performance marks them as a band to keep a close watch on. - Rave Magazine, Patrick Perrier, Kath Pollock

Bio

Hanabi was created in late 2003 by Anita Goldsworthy and Remy Boccalatte, two singer-songwriters from Brisbane, Australia.

In 2004 the duo travelled through North and South America, gathering inspiration, busking on street corners, throwing together a demo in Vancouver and performing in little music hubs in-between snowboarding and trekking Machu Pichu. Their return to Australia in late 2005 saw them immediately hit the Brisbane music scene.

Musicians were rounded up, including Aaron Steuer on trumpet, Bill Shey on bass guitar and Simion Taylor on drums and have been regularly seen playing Ric's Bar, The Alley Bar and The Zoo alongside Brisbanes' best indie bands and national supports including 'Special Patrol' (ADE) and 'The Seabellies' (SYD).

Hanabi spent the summer of 06/07 in Bluebox Studios recording their much anticipated debut album 'Speaking in Haiku' with engineer and co-producer Mattias Harcourt, and released independently through Take Luck Records in March 2007.

This year has also seen a line-up change with the new addition of drummer Anthony Lawrence, followed by an East Coast tour, festival performances at 'The Valley Fiesta' and were recently selected to showcase at The Big Sound Music Summit.

Taking their name from the Japanese translation for fireworks it's hard not to fall in love with this explosive energetic group. Hanabi seemlessly combine folk-ish, nu-jazz-pop melodies with alternative rock elements all the while touching on that certain something that leaves the listener smiling from ear to ear.

From twinkly piano to jangly guitars, conversational male/female vocal layering and sweeping crescendos that could top a film score, Hanabi are certainly a band to keep a close eye on.

The Hanabi debut 'Speaking in Haiku' is out now through Take Luck Records available at all good indie music stores.
