For those of you who like to be the first to know about new indie bands, I have just the addition for your blog reader: Buzzbands.la, created by Kevin Bronson, a former L.A. Times music writer. Specifically, Bronson’s Ears Wide Open feature points readers to bands they have likely never heard of, and largely unsigned.

Here is a snapshot of Bronson’s latest finds:

The debut EP from Hand is titled “Antiquities,” and it is in no way disparaging to point out that it feels like a museum piece. The work of L.A. songwriter Eric J. McEntee stokes the fires kindled by ’70s folk and pop song artists whose lush, clarion songs are easy on the ears, if hard on the heart. Read more and listen to a Hand track>>

Hand happens to remind me of Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens). - TURNSTYLE

"Ears Wide Open: Hand"

The debut EP from Hand is titled “Antiquities,” and it is in no way disparaging to point out that it feels like a museum piece. The work of L.A. songwriter Eric J. McEntee stokes the fires kindled by ’70s folk and pop song artists whose lush, clarion songs are easy on the ears, if hard on the heart. McEntee himself likens “Antiquities,” recorded in his home studio in Los Feliz and released in April, to an album by a long-lost artist found in a thrift store. Indeed, the warm arrangements and pristine production make songs such as “Hymn for Stella” (his take on Bread’s “Hymn for Sylvia”) and “Say It’s Not Over” (originally by the Blue Things’ Val Stoecklein) seem like artifacts from a time capsule. Anybody looking to cast somebody to play Phil Ochs? Hand’s the man. - Buzzbands LA

Bio

Hand is a musical endeavor for a songwriter that emanates from many different times and places at once. It is about being a musician, not a band with finite line ups, as Hand is just as much Hand when the group was two people playing on the streets of Paris this summer or five people playing The Bootleg theatre in Los Angeles. The music produced under this name over the last 10 years is called Hand in a deliberate effort to deflect any ideas about the music being part of a single persona, aesthetic or image and more about the music itself. As mentioned the music is deeply rooted in tradition, Hand is an expression of tribute to the many songwriters that have come before him, he is simply another link in the chain, and in some cases as you will hear from the music – the link before the chain.
