"CD Review"

"All kinds of roots music, from rockabilly to reggae, surface in various shapes and forms in Pick Me!, mixed in with country, rock and blues. Hank's style has been distilled into what is now a distinctive, original and humorous voice. The album's a solo tour de force. Hank Vann's melodic songs contain more hooks than you'd find in an angler's kit bag, and they're crisply delivered, with well constructed breaks, featuring Hank's hot guitar licks and chordal work." Tony Hillier. - Rhythms Magazine

"Hank's highly commended"

"Receiving a highly commended in the ABC's Fresh Air competition is as good as winning for Mackay's Hank Vann.
While he says that winning would have been wonderful, he's happy to capitalise on the opportunity to get his music to a wider audience.
"It's all about recognition," says Hank. "It gives me an idea I'm on the right track with the style of music I'm presenting," he says. "To be highly commended in this sort of competition results in airplay and airplay is a difficult beast to get on your side in this corporate age."
The Fresh Air competition is an annual search by the ABC for adult contemporary singer/songwriters in regional and rural Australia.
Hank entered his CD Pick Me! in the competition. The single from the album is called Too Old To Hold Back." Judy Kelly. - ABC Online

"CD Review, "Punslinger""

"Hank Vann is a man with a sense of fun - as you'd expect from a bloke who uses the word "pun" in a, well, pun.
This release, his second solo effort from a career that goes back to the hazy days of the 1970's, shows that experience can be hard to beat.
Hank describes his music as "folked-up pop", and it's not off the mark. There are the hooks and catches of pop but mixed in and underpinning much of the album are folk and country roots.
He is a man not afraid to delve into areas that, while laced with humour, are not always polite dinner conversation." Lindsay Saunders. - Daily Mercury, Mackay QLD

"CD Review, "Punslinger""

"Music lovers who think they don't like folky pop should take the trouble to still give this record a good listen;- it falls under the category roots music, but the folk influences are so subtle that you don't even notice you're listening to pop. It sounds that good!
These are mostly effortless pop songs with seriously deep content. Pop songs that are incredibly well crafted and multi-layered, but also intimate, straightforward and accessible. This is a CD to cherish - one with which to lock yourself up and shut yourself off.
When you've finished savouring the songs on this album, take my advice, pour yourself a beer and wait five minutes before changing the CD."

Bio

As Hank Vann sings in "Punslinger", his signature song; "Ever since I got that guitar in my hand, I've been slinging it all over the land.", well, make that "the world", because this guy has been round the musical block. From the Sydney folk club scene of the 1970's, to Amsterdam club, cafe and radio appearances, American road trips, Tamworth, Australia Starmaker and Golden Guitar wins to presently purveying a mean brand of Folked-up Pop and Roots music, Hank Vann is living proof that life experience gives depth to art.
Get on board with this Punslinger - it's one hell of a ride.
"I'm a Punslinger riding the here and now
finding love in the now and then
you wanna get together baby, I got the how
just you tell me the where and when."
