"The Age, Melbourne (2009)"

At 21, Macklin is already a remarkably assured singer. She is also a gifted composer, offering several appealing tunes of her own – including the delightfully eccentric Sleep Song. - Jessica Nicholas

"The Courier Mail, Brisbane (2008)"

A taste of top-class jazz was heard in Brisbane's inner city with Hannah Macklin and Steve Newcomb combining to put on three brief but snappy shows.

The pair are regarded as two of the state's top performers.

Last May Macklin launched her debut EP of original music, "Stop, Stop, Go" with The Hannah Macklin Band.

As part of the duo she doubles on keyboard and sings with Newcomb. The 20-minute sessions were well-received by shoppers and fans. - Courier Mail

"Rave Magazine, Brisbane (2008)"

The Hannah Macklin Band start their set one member down - Macklin doubling keys and a dexterous set of vocal cords. Steve Newcomb takes over on piano, as The Rainy Day Blues offers a souful comment about shitty weather.

As the crowd can attest to – inordinately large for a Tuesday night at Ric’s- she allows her band members their moments to shine... but it is Hannah that always returns to the centre of attention, her vibrant scatting once again pushing her abilities to the limit. - Rave Magazine

"Katie Noonan (2009)"

Hannah is a vibrant, talented young vocalist and musician with an intense dedication to her art. - Katie Noonan

"Barney McAll (2009)"

[About the Macklin & Newcomb Duo]:

Aligned with a new fourth stream, Hannah and Steve [Newcomb] are buzzing around a new era of music making and the honey pot surely fills. Celestial reaching they are ‘counting the steps of the sun’ and ‘seeking after that sweet golden climbe’. Do your head a favour, check 'em out! - Barney McAll

"PBS Radio, Melbourne (2010)"

One of my pet peeves is the description of a singer as -

"Oh, she’s the next…" or
"He’s the next…" or
"Sounds just like…".

You sound like yourself. - David Shields

Bio

“When I was a little girl, I swore I’d marry a Maxwell one day…”

You enter the joint. You cast your eyes and tune your ears to the sight and sound of Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells – beginning with their vivacious, curvaceous ringleader. Echoing shades of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder with a nod to Rufus Wainwright and Bjork is the voice of the exuberant and always animated Hannah Macklin. Soaring, sweet, scratchy or smooth, her vocals stun, and her infectious stage presence draws you right up to the stage ‘til you’re bumping and grinding, and treading on each other’s toes. Hannah doesn’t mind. She’s been eyeing you off for a while.

You now suss out the sharp-threaded mob of Maxwells surrounding their singer. What is a Maxwell? He is dapper; a snappy dresser and a sharp talker. He is fine-suited and thin-tied, and he oozes charisma. He never kisses and tells… but he kisses, and how! Watch him tear up a mean funk tune on stage, then charm every Maxette in the joint with one wink of the eye. What is a Maxette? Big hair, red lips, deadly curves and her own brand of groove, a Maxette is a Maxwell’s genetically-engineered love match. You’re going to want to get to know these people.

Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells deliver smart, sassy tunes in all forms – think 50s-flavoured rockabilly, 60s-flavoured soul, 70s-flavoured funk, 80s-inspired hair and 90s-flavoured groove. You’ll feel like you’ve been zapped into the past to a rowdy blues bar hotspot, or an underground funk club surrounded by a cloudy haze, or a 50s-style diner doing the lindy-hop on checkered floorboards. Then snap! Mod turns to ultra-modern, and you’re thrust into the future. Unique songwriting, wacky riffs and clever, poetic lyrics are all hip to the music of today, and beyond. “That perfect blend of old and new comes together like peanut butter and honey on toast.”(Scene Magazine.)

Recent winners in the YouBloom International Songwriting Competition, Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells have received much attention since their formation in early 2010. Still a fresh-faced youth, the band has played alongside some of Brisbane’s freshest musical offerings, including Band of Frequencies, The Kelly Gang, Chocolate Strings, Pear & The Awkward Orchestra and Emma Dean - and, in their first ever show, supported the incredible Katie Noonan to a sold-out audience at The Globe. Collectively, the band’s experience stretches internationally, including performances and study in the USA, China and Korea, as well as a multitude of national tours and festivals.

"Imagine an oldschool sound that's syrupy and soulful with shards of Pharrell Williams and a bit of Kate Bush…” SCENE MAGAZINE

“At 21, Macklin is already a remarkably assured singer… she is also a gifted composer…” THE AGE

“A very likable stage persona…” THE COURIER MAIL
