Happy Mayfield

Happy Mayfield

BandPopFunk

Who is Happy Mayfield? Is he a rapper? A pariah? Does he rock diamonds or sweaters? It’s useless. We aren’t who we say we are & why should we be? Happy Mayfield is about getting happy. Flippin' conflicting styles--with precision. Fall on your face & die dancing. The Birth of Crit Hop is NOW!

Biography

10 years ago, Lester returned from the Bay to Sac. Teaching in the city schools, he met a young kid, 10 years his junior, who had a drumkit and a healthy respect for the boom bap. The young man, Chewie, introduced Lester to his bassman brother, JJ. The elder provided these young upstarts with mix CDs of soul, funk and jazz music - along with reports from life outside the High School Halls and Jazzbands. Together they dreamt of a world of jazz, hip-hop, soul and funk, where all humans could groove as one - or at least get paid playing some brutal beautiful music.

10 years later - with keyboard brother Bennie on board - the boys graduated from SF State College, weekday residencies in North Beach, apprenticeships with all the neo-soul bretheren passing through and whatnot. They hooked back up with Lester who was doing nothing but writing songs and touring around on solo albums of small acclaim. And, wam bam: Happy Mayfield was born.

Get Happy /// In your earbuds & in the clubs.
Get Happy in all the dives & concert halls.

Say you heard this music from a passing car window or through an apartment wall, you’d get it, right? But, what if the music carried with it something of substance? Something you've been missing? Something akin to brotherhood? Where is our “What’s Going On”, our “Rubber Soul”, our “Songs in the Key of Life”? I want “Blonde on Blonde” and “Kind of Blue” coming out tomorrow. Come on, people… you know you want it, too!"
