The best kept secret in music

"Antipop Music Fest 2005"

Unlike most of what we're used to hearing, this local trio isn't rooted in the pop music tradition. Less about melodies than about progressions and texture, they're more on the headlong side of post-rock. Though abstract, it was an engaging performance that exercised tension to good effect. The guitar occasionally roared and grated but most of the blitz came via Evan Shafran's drums. Some unconventional signatures, but man, that guy's a gorilla – one who flips his drumsticks around and plays with the club end to express himself. Guitarist Darin Hughes seemed to catch his band mates by surprise when he suddenly launched into the pummeling surf rock deluge of Dick Dale's "Misirlou." They fell into place though and it made for an entertaining cap to the set.
