"Review of HS's 2004 demo"

Artist: Harbor Skyline
Album: 2004 demo
Reviewed by: Matt Finelli of scenecore.com
Rating: 9 out of 10

Having only been together for about a year, Harbor Skyline is already creating a buzz in the music world. Having already played shows with Northstar and Underoath, the 5-piece looks to make a name for themselves with their new 3-track demo.

Track One- “Chosen Ones.” This is the most energetic track on the album. This song has an equal mix of screaming and singing, if not more screaming than singing, unlike the other songs which have more of a focus on the singing. The guitars on this track are more aggressive here than on any other track. This track reminds me of new Underoath.

Track Two- “Pardon the Indifference.” This song has more of a Fall Out Boy sound. The band only uses a little screaming in this track, keeping the focus on the singing, which sounds good. The guitars have a calmer, more catchy sound on this one, which will be heard as soon as the song opens.

Track Three- “The Return of September.” The final track opens up with a piano part, and then adds some guitar in the background, which I enjoyed. Then it breaks into the song, which uses a slower pace in the previous two tracks. This is lyrically the best track on the album. Also, the band incorporates a female vocalist on this track, and although I usually don’t like female vocals, I did like it on this track. Finally, there is a good breakdown at the conclusion of the track

The demo is very good, but once the band decides to make a full-length album, I think they need to pick one direction and stick with it, instead of changing up each time. But then again, the point of a demo is to see which way the band should go, and which ever way they choose, it should sound good if we are basing it on this demo.

Bio

Harbor Skyline, a punk/power pop band, located in Auburn, Alabama, has been on the rock scene for approximately a year. In this time, the 5 piece rock band has played throughout the south in bars and clubs gaining fans and support from all those who have watched them play. The goal of Harbor Skyline is to establish a genuine mix of exciting music with intelligent lyrics in a way that everyone who hears the band can associate themselves not only with the music, but also with each of the members of the band. When the band was formed, a large emphasis was placed on the idea that all of the members would come from different musical backgrounds so that the music would be as diverse as possible. Each member brought to the band sounds and styles taken from their previous band projects that formed a completely original writing process.

Harbor Skyline has been said to resemble the sounds of The Used, Taking Back Sunday, and Thursday. The band has played shows with bands on major labels such as North Star (Triple Crown), The Snake, the Cross, the Crown (Equal Vision), Underoath (Tooth and Nail) and Andrew WK. With a high-energy live performance to match their musical talent, Harbor Skyline is ready to make their mark in the music community, not only in the Southeast, but nationally as well.
