Bio

Harm’s Road is a post-modern pop band that synthesizes inspiration and influence from all sides of the musical spectrum into an innovative poly-stylistic package. They have recently won the Vancouver Summer Warfare Battle of the Bands: Aug 2009. From its genesis in a chance meeting between Erin Puckey (vocals) and Bob Roxburgh (guitar) and the long, relaxed backyard jam sessions of Summer 2007, Harm's Road came to be through many months of writing in Bob's living room and nomadic practice wherever they could find the space. Along the way, they found bassist Alex Hawkins and drummer Mario Avila, and landed in their current home in Mario's jam-space in early 2008. Though the band physically emerged from Vancouver's sprawling community of alt-indy-punk-jazz musicians, its drive comes from lonely nights in foreign lands; after years of dabbling in their respective crafts, it was cultural and linguistic alienation that spurred Erin and Bob to plumb the depths of their artistic angst and write. Isolated, they honed their skills - Erin in New York, and Bob in Japan - working with the mercilessness of city life to find truth in despair, strength in the journey, and the power of the sound, the word, and the harmony. The band is musically diverse: Bob's roots in classic and alternative rock are tempered with Erin's formal training in musical theatre and jazz. Alex tunes in with low-key melodic metal stylings, and Mario brings jazz drumming and an admiration for pop-punk. Together, they excel at deconstructing the tropes of pop. Their focus is on creating something new and beautiful by embracing the juxtaposition, ambiguity, and ironies that evolve, the only question that matters, "does it sound good?"
