Bio

Legendary songwriter, producer, recording and performing artist, Jerry Calliste Jr., n.k.a.
(now known as) Hashim Music (performing under the name of his music publishing
company), was born in the Bronx and raised there until the age of 5. This electro genius
moved to the Inwood Washington Heights area, on Dyckman Street (200St.) in New York
City, where he began creating hip hop, electro, break beat and electronica music at 14 years of
age. Hashim Music is known for his heavy driving synth bass and distinct orchestral synth
string sounds that are placed over old school hip hop beats to produce his unique style of
Electro-Electronica hip hop funk.
From 1979 until 1981, Calliste Jr. could be found in the parks, at the Cadet Headquarters,
Southern Blvd in the Bronx. Influenced by Harold McGuire or DJ Whiz Kid, Kraftwerk,
Afrika Bambaataa, and Man Parrish Calliste Jr. set out to accomplish big goals in the music
biz and attained those goals and secured a spot for himself in electro-hip hop dance music
lore. Hashim Music's determination at 17 years old in 1983 spearheaded him into early
success at a very young age in the music business. Not many people if any are responsible for
managing all facets of a songs success. He was the songwriter, co-producer, co-owner of
Cutting Records, promoter, publisher and distributor at 17 years old.
Hashim Music arguably, the best electro songwriter and producer of all time, there is no doubt
he is definitely one of the most popular. Consistently voted in the top 5 and top 10 on a "Top
Electro Songs of all Times" list, Hashim Music usually has 2, sometimes 3, songs listed in the
top 10 on sites such as Electro Empire.
Unofficially Hashim Music has collectively and easily sold over 2 million units worldwide.
He influenced thousands of people to become DJ's. Hashim packed and still packs dance
floors two and a half decades later. Hashim Music peaked at number 43 on Billboard
magazines dance music charts with "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" in 1984 and 1985, “Al-Naafiysh
(The Soul)" is licensed on over 55+ compilations around the world. Numerous DJ's use "Al-
Naafiysh (The Soul)" in DJ competitions and it continues to influence people around the
globe today.
In 2002, "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" was licensed to Sony/Epic and Sony Playstation II for
Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto Vice City for the game and soundtrack respectively. "Al-
Naafiysh (The Soul)", in recent months, was also the underlying music for Rockstar Games
Grand Theft Auto Vice City second television commercial campaign. In September 2003,
Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) licensed the track for new game title,
NBA Shootout II. It was part of the Definitive Electro compilation released on Universal TV -
U.K. and Fabric 24 - U.K.'s compilation.
Hashim Music headlined and performed to a sold out crowd at Wembley Arena (U.K.) in
addition to several other large venues throughout the world.
For the past 2 decades, Hashim Music and several other electro-hip hop songwriters and
producers like Afrika Bambaataa and Anthony Rother have kept the electro flame alive.
