Bio

Hat Check Girl

Santa Barbara based duo Hat Check Girl is pleased to announce the release of their second CD, "Six Bucks Shy." The band showcases the literary songwriting of Annie Gallup and Peter Gallway, including newly co-written work, music from their long histories of solo projects, and well-chosen classics. Concerts feature Annie on electric guitar and lap steel and Peter on electric guitar, baritone guitar, and bass.

A lifetime's dedication to her art has made Annie Gallup an icon among people who take songwriting seriously. She is the winner of the Kerrville New Folk and Napa songwriting competitions and was awarded a Michigan Arts Council grant to write and perform her first one-person performance piece, Stay Me With Flagons. Annie has been performing at concert venues throughout North America since 1994 and has been heard on NPR's All Things Considered in an interview with Noah Adams. Her eighth solo album "Weather" was released to critical acclaim in 2010 and she is currently in the studio working on a follow up, which will be available early in 2012.

Called “a master of free verse” in the Boston Globe, Peter Gallway has released fourteen albums on the Warner/Reprise and various independent labels including 2008’s “Freedom Is.” He has produced over fifty albums and special projects, such as the Grammy nominated "Bleecker Street: Greenwich Village in the ‘60s," featuring Chrissie Hynde and Jonatha Brooke, and "Time and Love: The Music of Laura Nyro," featuring Suzanne Vega and Jane Siberry. He has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan. In 2009 he released "Manhattan Nocturne," a solo collection of jazz songs about coming of age in Greenwich Village. He is currently working on a collection of poems.

Hat Check Girl will be touring throughout the U.S. and Canada in support of their second CD release in fall 2011.

“... We are in the presence of two very fine songwriters here. The writing is all the more powerful for its subtlety, and the musical settings only enhance the effect... something like the solo work of either Daniel Lanois or Robbie Robertson. Music this finely crafted can sometimes sound emotionless, but the effect here is intimate, and filled with simmering passion.” - Oliver di Place
