One city comes to mind when thinking about grunge music - Seattle.
The place that spawned a large number of the most successful and influential rock bands of the 1990s has been instilled in many as the birthplace of the biggest grunge acts ever to hit the scene. Seminal groups such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam all claim to have roots in the city. The location continues as a breeding ground for fresh new groups with the genre's influence, although it has also resulted in more than a few run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter bands.
Nonetheless, one band is going against the trend by taking some aspects of the aforementioned genre and cobbling it together with other influences. This up-and-comer goes by the name Haymaker. Lance Bachler and Chris Wright, a couple of the band's original members, have been creating tunes for more than 15 years. They relocated to Seattle in '04, and released their eponymous debut in 2005. The album didn't make waves in the international scene, although it was a robust collection of songs which helped establish the group as a hot act in the area.
It just seems fair to attempt to measure this group by the standards set by local grunge pioneers. The gritty vocals and rock n' roll riffs may cause one to surmise that they sound similar to Pearl Jam. This comparison may be complimentary, albeit slightly unfair to the group. The 'grunge' label doesn't do much to describe their music, which comprises different styles and influences. Mingling folksy acoustic guitars and head-on rock ballads show that the group is quite at ease with running the full gamut. Their sound also jives well with smaller and more intimate settings, much like any band of the genre. Syrupy acoustics, sharp writing, and velvety guitar solos are to be expected from their songs.
One of the standout tracks on the album, 'Milky Fly', feels like a super-cool salute to the 90s, with textured riffs and lyrical songwriting. Haymaker is now toiling on new music, which they hope to bring out by this year's end, or the start of the next. Haymaker is a laid back/in your face original rock band with music that features courageous lyrics, sneaky harmonies, and engaging guitar lines. Based in Seattle, their influences span the genres of all that is dirty, hard, real and sweet.
Founding members Chris Wright and Lance Bachler met in a history class and wound up collaborating together over several of Chris’s homemade Micro brews. A drunken night produced (to their amazement) a combination of sticky guitar riffs and aggressive vocals which they luckily recorded. Since that fateful night, they’ve compiled an arsenal of tunes that have been applauded from Bremerton to Santa Fe and a couple street corners in between.
During a Seattle downpour, Chris moved to Arizona and formed the band Jamie’s Brother who received consistent airplay on KDKB and played with the likes of Queensryche, Crosby Stills and Nash and the Goo Goo Dolls.
Lance stayed in Seattle and formed his own bands, Stuck and Groove Movement which gathered some notoriety (though not very much) of their own.
The duo regrouped in 2004 and after spending a season writing and recording they hooked up with various Seattle musicians to release Haymaker’s self titled debut CD.
While searching for a drummer with the right chemistry, they found the Ohio transplant Dean “The Doctuh” DeShetler who had logged time in various Ohio area bands including the Welfare Gypsies and The Shrunken Heads. His diverse playing style and dry sense of humor provides the “it” factor Haymaker needed.
Next came the bassist, Scott Jefferson. A Yakimanian Icon, Scott has honed his chops in the highly popular bands Quarter Mile Pumpkin and The Space Cretins. On stage, his big rock energy is infectious.
With the line up finally complete, Haymaker has hit the studio again. Their anticipated third release is set for early 2014. You can find them rocking Seattle-area venues leaving a smoking trail of rock, awe and open jaws.
