Today we’d like to introduce you to HEADPHONE.

HEADPHONE, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
HEADPHONE, like many groups, formed when key members of several local acts created a new project. Morgan was working as an intern at Capricorn Studios, where he was introduced to both Darren and Phil, who had come in to record their respective groups. Phil and Morgan soon set out on the process of writing new music, which would eventually become HEADPHONE’s repertoire.

Currently, HEADPHONE is in the process of releasing their four-track LP entitled “Frames of Light” in late September. This will quickly be followed by in-studio live performance videos released on YouTube, several shows around San Diego, short tours up and down the West Coast, and a second LP release at the end of 2018. In short, things are just heating up.

Morgan later approached Darren about starting their own recording studio, a dream which has now been realized with Foxhole Studios, in Point Loma. Out of this studio, they produce music not only for HEADPHONE, but for other local San Diego acts like DJ Who, Future Human, and Girl boy. Over the last couple years, HEADPHONE has gained popularity up and down the West Coast and will continue to tour and deliver new music to your eardrums, if you will so kindly hit the play button.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
HEADPHONE makes big, haunting, textural recordings, and puts on a weird, energetic show. Our productions are full-spectrum, enigmatic leaps into a swirling storm of texture and enduring melody lines. The band works tirelessly to meld all of our inspirations into a new, peculiar sound. All three members enjoy the creative process from start to finish, whether it’s working up initial riffs and hooks, or finalizing volume automations in our studio sessions. Our unique live performances sound pleasing. All music you hear from the floor are created to fill the spaces of a live venue.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
There is no longer a vouching system in music. The problem used to be that the industry had gatekeepers, and it was hard to impress the man with the platinum key. Now, the opposite “problem” exists, where individual users are not exposed to great music because of the sheer amount of content that lives on the free and open internet. Spotify playlisting, and exposure through word of mouth are the best ways to be heard. That is why HEADPHONE asks people to share us around if you dig our music. We are sticking around and dropping a lot more music within the next year!
