"Indie Week Band of the Day: Heartcopy"

Montreal gets two things right every time: cappuccinos and synth pop. Electro synth is fabulous everywhere, but it has a certain je ne c'est quoi when it comes from the city of harmony. Heartcopy is no exception; pairing co-ed vocals with airy, simple songs that make you feel fuzzy inside. It's kind of like Stars, but much less depressing. At times you want to cuddle, but at others, such as the chorus of "Without Sound" ; they kick it up a notch and let you know it's time to dance…or at least to sway. They just released the video for their latest single "Redo"; which features a sexy little romp on par with their suggestive style. They've moved into dreamier territory since they released their single "Tomorrow" last year and it's a welcome change. Good job Heartcopy. See you on the dance floor. - Toronto Music Scene

"HEARTCOPY "Re-Do""

“Re-do” by HEARTCOPY, a synth/punk/pop band from Montreal, comes out of the gate sounding like the beginning of your typical club banger, but the song spontaneously morphs into a smooth-pop masterpiece afterwards, so you have to give it some time (namely, beyond the first seven seconds), to work itself out. The synths that introduce the track are persistent throughout the song, but they take on a totally different feel when layers of airy electronic bliss float over them. The vocal work is excellent; a poppy female songstress goes back and forth with a male whisper, but they come together beautifully to harmonize in the chorus. Like the parts of a hazy dream, the layers of this track mesh together to generate a distant feel, and though it came out five months ago, this hidden gem didn’t receive the recognition it ought to have. So if the reason for this tragedy is that most didn’t listen after the first seven seconds, then we’re sure glad we did, because this track is a must-listen. - Hilly Dilly

"Video Review: Heartcopy’s “REDO”"

The video for “REDO”, the emergence of Montreal’s Heartcopy, features front-woman and sex-bomb Wynn Holmes (who happens to be married to So You Think You Can Dance Canada winner, Nico Archambault– talk about a powerhouse dance-duo) and was shot by Montreal fashion videographer Kevin Calero, frequent collaborator with 514 royalty, Carey Tauben.

The imagery of “REDO” takes advantage of Calero’s minimalist sensibilities to highlight the contemporary, sensual movements of Holmes, all the while reflecting the loop-based structure of both the song, as well as every single relationship I’ve ever experienced. The creative use of frequency-based sand shapes is my personal favourite touch, but each scene would work beautifully as a still-shot, beautifully framed and thought-out.

The song’s lyrics and tone explore the darker underside of bedroom antics, and surprisingly manage to reflect both my love of dark, danceable tracks, as well as my current love life… Who would have guessed?!

In any case, no matter whether you’re lustful or love-sick, take a peek at the video and keep the other eye on when this band emerges to play live.

"[NEW VIDEO] Heartcopy – Re-Do"

Last December, Heartcopy impressed us with their debut 2MW EP. “Without Sound” and “Re-Do” (“a darkly-tinged love song about the repetitive lessons from heart pangs and truth”) are their first releases of this year.
Wynn Holmes (keys, vocals) and RaRa (production, vocals) are from Montreal. - Don't Need No Melody

"[INTRODUCING] Heartcopy"

Heartcopy is an electro/synth pop duo from Montreal. Wynn Holmes handles keys and vocals, and RaRa produces and sings too.
The sweetness of their name doesn’t reflect any immaturity or simplicity in their sound. Their arrangements, harmonies, and lyrics are complex and interesting.

"HEARTCOPY: Re-do"

Re-do is the new single from Montreal indie-poppers, HEARTCOPY. It’s a darkly-tinged love song about the repetitive lessons from heart pangs and truth. It is this cyclical or circular nature of relationships that director Kevin Calero and artistic director, Debbie Geltner explored with the shapes, shots, and textures for the “Re-do” video. Channeling 60s minimalism with restrained finesse, Calero has given his fashion film flare to HEARTCOPY’S notes on love and losing. - Kick Kick Snare

"Heartcopy - 2MW EP"

We described Montreal duo Heartcopy as an enigma when we featured their single Tomorrow recently. Well now they've released what we think is their first EP, which features the aforementioned debut single, and still we have scant information on them. The work of a producer named Wynn Holmes and a vocalist named RaRa, this EP is supposedly the first of a series of releases planned for 2013. By the sound of it there's much more to them than the cutting, experimental pop they explored on Tomorrow ; these five tracks show an interesting diversity which means they're keen not to get bogged down to a particular style. Either that or they haven't quite defined what they want their music to be yet, other than the loose term alt-pop although these songs are far too accomplished for people who are still finding their feet.

The shift is instant, right after the single kicks things off they immediately head upwards to the clouds and explore dreamy and ethereal pop on 'Be', which verges on the guilty pleasure side of things until it really gets going and shows its grand ambition and stargazing wonder, complete with a euphoric, tribal ending. 'Take Me Home' tones things down again, but only briefly; this is pure pop but it's a cut above the generic chart fluff. More bases are covered on 'Algebra', which feels a touch more contemporary and shows they have the ability to cross over to the clubs if they wish, and also on 'Falling Onto You' where more organic sounds are blended into their electronics. It's the most soulful track here and possibly the nearest we get to cracking that enigma. It all becomes quite personal until they swamp it with sporadic clumps of beats, not content to settle for normality when they can experiment. If you're disillusioned with modern pop music then a large dose of Heartcopy could be just the tonic. - The Sound Of Confusion

Bio

Heartcopy has come a long way from their synth-pop beginnings. They took what they developed from their live performances and managed to harness that energy into their latest 4-song self-titled EP to be released July 2014. On stage, Heartcopy is raw and kinetic - like an ode to punk nostalgia filtered through shoegaze textures and 80's synthesizers. This girl-boy duo has grown up into a full-fledged garage pop band, unafraid to slam their hearts on the dance floor.
