Hearts in Pencil

Hearts in Pencil

BandAlternativePop

A powdery pop renaissance cut with punk that cuts your nostrils up... in a charming way. "Bright young Witney starlets in the making... with their evolving style of swaggering indie punk ska with swooping riffs, crashing chorus's and urban commentary. Watch out." (Coo Coo Club)

Biography

Hearts in Pencil... we are 4 late teens from Oxfordshire who formed through friendships and a mutual interest in Pop music (in it's original meaning) and have a similar distaste for the modern day "indie" music scene, which doesn't seem to rekindle the artistic and creative side that the original idea of indie was defined. Instead, we draw inspiration from revolutionary bands, such as the Smiths, the Velvet Underground, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd and Joy Division, but also lyrically through literature and history. For instance, our song 'Hannibal ad Portas' takes Carthage's heroic commander and compares his struggle for power with the Roman Empire to modern day society's flaws. Feedback towards 'Hannibal...' has been excellent, and a local Oxfordshire promoter who runs the Coo Coo Club at the Jericho Tavern said "Totally blown away by your new track, the more I hear it the more i want to listen to it again... MORE! MORE!", before we were offered a gig with her. We've learnt so much whilst gigging and have tried to push ourselves to play better and constantly write new exciting songs. We recently played the Oxford O2 Academy, although it was quite nerve-racking, it was a fantastic experience and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Soon after, we were asked to play again, but as main support.

We hope you like the music :)

Lyrics

Hannibal ad Portas

Written By: Lawrence Dixon

The plug will get pulled, far too soon, They'll be no encore, they'll be no room.
For your petty opinions or your right to choose.
We will forever swallow your lies
You guys can shift the plates but you'll never know your rights.
We'll keep paying them our gold,
They'll keep turning out the lights.
Until the darkness doesn't seem like the threat no more.
Old wounds to settle new scores,
It's dangerous, use due force
There's a planet full of martyrs, They're just waiting for a cause.

Hannibal ad portus, look where the demon leaders brought us.
Since the future all got sold, for dollars, hate and for coal,
So all we have is soul, too soothe their endless thirst,
Remember what you voted for: the best of the worst.

They play behind the curtain, in ivory towers
So the strings on our limbs are too thin to see.
You won't notice by the time you're 19,
The 'box you in' society.
History tastes so sour so we spit it on the streets.
The savagery of power, just look at what we eat.
So this is dominion? the rising of the sea.

Hannibal ad portus, would you step outside the fortress on your own.
Since the future all got sold, for dollars, hate and for coal,
So all we have is soul, too soothe their endless thirst,
Remember what you voted for: the best of the worst.

Salvation still ain't coming, there's a rising pulse of senseless drumming,
Kicking holes in the sky, trying to get out.
These people are so cynical, there's hate behind their eyes,
We'll need it fucking biblical to rid this house of lies.

Pity human rat race, malicously mis-informed
Hannibal at the gates, the wolves at your door.
So this is dominion? the rising of the sea.

Hannibal ad portus, would you step outside the fortress on your own.
Since the future all got sold, for dollars, hate and for coal,
So all we have is soul, too soothe their endless thirst,
Remember what you voted for: the best of the worst.

A Place Called Pandemonium

Written By: Lawrence Dixon

I said 'i am not who i think i am'
the devil incarnate or Jesus's hands.
Your face lit by starlight,
we sweat and we hold tight.
The gravity of travesty,
a line in the sand.

The enigma of fury, holds us hard together.
For peace and for glory in the forests of forever.
Never never again, sleep at the local park,
when kids on different paths, fumble in the dark,
then there's love, then loss, then nothingness
then nothing really lasts.

Did you hear she has machine-guns for eyes?
BANG BANG BANG oh you live in disguise.
I saw it in the alien skies, you can see from out my window
some days it gets fucking strange.

Give the beat up you were born to die,
but my heart still races when you cry
and i tried, but you're machine guns are inside.
Follow me. Follow me.
Remember you're a citizen, a child of Adam or a trial of Eve,
a tiny vat of nothingness that explodes through lack of sympathy.
And the fireworks light the kids, you trod into the earth.

The enigma of fury, holds us hard together.
For peace and for glory in the forests of forever.
Never never again, sleep at the local park,
when kids on different paths, fumble in the dark,
then there's love, then loss, then nothingness
then nothing really lasts.
And the fireworks light the kids, you trod into the earth.
In a place called pandamonium.
