Heather Layne has been wiritng songs and playing music for the past seven years at local rescue missions, jails, recovery groups, drug programs, coffee houses, churches, and fairs. In May of 2007, Heather started sending her music, which is also in the country music crossover genre, to music publishers all over the United States. She got some interest on her songs, and she signed "Back Roads", "Rare Find", and "Let It Be With Me" to a music publisher out of Brandon Hills, Wisconsin. This publishing company started sending the songs all over the nation, and in mid-September, Heather received a letter from Neal James, a major producer in Nashville, TN, who has worked with such artists as Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Bruce Springsteen.
In the letter, James wrote that he enjoyed the songs but couldn't place them with the company at the time. However, he commended her on her song "Rare Find", and gushed over her voice, stating, "Also we would like to especially commend you on your demo singer. This girl has one of the most commercial voices that I've heard in a long time. In my opinion, with the right quality production, a little luck, and with the right person on her side helping to guide and direct her progress, she could stand a much better chance within the music industry.
Not discouraged, Heather decided to thank James for his compliments. Layne said, "I thanked him for the positive feedback and e-mailed, 'By the way, I am the songwriter and the demo singer.' I honestly thought I would never hear from the guy again. But much to my surprise, he responded the next day and the rest is history."
In a follow-up letter, Neal James praised Layne's musical talents, stating, "Your vocals have a richness that is non-present with the majority of other artists currently on the radio and your approach to songwriting is very cool. Basically speaking, I think you're incredible!!!"
James plans on producing an album with Heather, to display both her songwriting and vocal talents. When asked what it was about Layne that caught his attention, James explained, "The main thing that got my attention was Heather's uniqueness in her vocal abilities as well as her style as a songwriter. She is not trying to copy anyone... she is only trying to sound like herself."
He is currently in the selection process of which songs will be used on the album. Once the project is completed, he will shop the album to the major labels in Nashville, many of which are unapproachable by the public. James is confident that Layne stands a good chance of success in the music industry.
When asked how he felt about her relatively short career as a musician, James told the Sentinel, "Success in the music industry has nothing to do with time. It has everything to do with the uniqueness of talent and the appeal of that talent to the masses. Heather has a style that is enjoyable as well as exciting to listen to. As a producer, Heather is a rare find. She is a double treat being a strong vocalist as well as a tremendous songwriter." - Dinuba Sentinel, November, 2007

Heather Layne's music reflects her life journey. "I write out of my own life experiences... I also write songs about the lives of those around me... we all have a story.  I believe music has a way of expressing the thoughts and feelings of thousands of people at one time, in one song.  For me, that's what songwriting is all about... taking life's ups and downs and creating a song that can encourage someone else.  We all need to know that we're not alone... we all need to know that there is someone out there who understands."
