""An absolute MUST have for any collector of neo-60's pure rock and roll.""

Every now and again, on a blue moon, something magical and fantastic CAN happen. In the case of HEAVY CREATURES release of their debut album "Loaded Sky" just such an alignment of the stars has occured. An absolute MUST have for any collector of neo-60's pure rock and roll. That is to say that if you find yourself stuck in love with the type of sound the wonderful late 1960's was so prolific in producing then you are sure to appreciate this work of art. HEAVY CREATURES would have fit right in on tour with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath, etc., if there wasn't the issue of a 35 year time gap.

""Loaded Sky is a vision into the past and anyone who likes vintage psychedelic rock should check this band out.""

"The late 60's and early 70's psychedelic rock movement produced a bunch of great bands that still influence bands to this day, and to say that Heavy Creatures shows that influence would be an under statement. There are not a lot of bands (that I know of) That still play vintage psychedelic rock so it's kind of refreshing to hear, and in my opinion they pull it off flawlessly toped off with a good recording. Loaded Sky is a vision into the past and anyone who likes vintage psychedelic rock should check this band out."

Bio

Heavy Creatures started making music together in the fall of 2004 in DUMBO, Brooklyn in a 140 year old monolithic warehouse basement. The place is haunted with ancient sailors, withered pines and sparkling red rubies. With the cohesion of all of these elements, a wonderful incantation of rock, sea shanty choruses and psychedelia has been born.

Their musical influences are on the fringe of many bands but most notably The Doors, early 70s era Heart and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

Heavy Creatures' debut recording "Loaded Sky", hits you immediately with the pummeling instrumental opener "Black Roller" and goes straight into "Mid Night Mares" which showcases the duo vocal intensity of Sarah and Kelley. "Loaded Sky" takes the listener through an up and down psychedelic landscape that ranges from loud to ethereal and back again.

After a year of playing live shows around New York City and shaping their strange sound, they decided to make a record. The only way to do it right was to stay exactly where their sound was born; right in that DUMBO basement. Everything was recorded live by talented engineer & pedal designer John Schumann; who has designed pedals for Radiohead, Sparklehorse and Portishead. The recording and mixing are all analog, every step of the way. Tracking it live was paramount. The raw sounds, arrangements, and overall strangeness of the songs are what makes an organic live recording a brilliant way to introduce themselves to the world.

After the initial tracks were complete, they made their way over to Gary Olson's Marlborough Farms Studio for some overdubs and mixing. This studio has created excellent recordings for bands such as Ladybug Transistor, The Essex Green and Patrick Kauffmann's solo record. The next step was to head on down to Fat City Studios, in Blue Bell Pennsylvania to work with Paul Hammond and Paul Sinclair for mastering. Having just mastered the album Espers II, this team was perfect for the final step.

Each band member hails from a musical background. Kelley Vaughn (guitar-vocals) is from a family of southern gospel piano players and this is her first musical project. Sarah Blust ( keyboard-vocals -percussion) (also ex-Marmalade, Succubus) has been in many musical projects since her days at Oberlin in the early 90s. She is also currently in the political marching band The Rude Mechanical Orchestra and plays drums with the band Flaming Fire. Patrick Kauffman (Drums) is also an accomplished musician who, during the beginning of Heavy Creatures, simultaneously completed his first stellar solo full length release "On The Mysterious Other".

Above all, no matter what the background is, Heavy Creatures are truly making an original sound.
