"RVA Magazine: Heavy Midgets / TUNGS split LP release"

“. . . the distorted melodies that shape the choruses of Heavy Midgets’ songs are what really make them stand out. Side-ender “Safe On Your Mountaintop” is particularly noteworthy in this respect, as McCarthy’s vocals and McQuary’s guitar leads start out pleasant and build over the course of the song’s three-and-a-half minute length. . . to a dramatic climax that’s equally driven by loud, feedback-laced guitar and high, clear vocal melodies. The contrast captured at this moment demonstrates exactly what separates Heavy Midgets from the guitar-pop masses.” – Andrew Necci - RVA Magazine

"RVA Magazine No. 12: Heavy Midgets"

“. . . they’ve done much over the past year to impress this city with their unique blend of psychedelic pop euphoria. . . . they received widespread notice as one of the new bands to watch in Richmond. . . . Bands like Heavy Midgets are a very positive indicator of the future of Richmond music. This group of ambitious thinkers defy the stereotype of a young generation that is lazy and lacking drive. Heavy Midgets are one of the most promising treats that the RVA scene has to offer.” – Shannon Cleary - RVA Magazine

"Tome to the Weather Machine: Review of Heavy Midgets - Something Terrible EP"

“. . . every day after I’d gotten an e-mail came from (Heavy Midgets), I’ve listened to this damned awesome EP from the Richmond, VA upstart at least once. . . . damn it all if these guys don’t know how to write a catchy tune and execute with some real honest passion and integrity. It’s real rock’n'roll, remember that stuff? . . . . one of the most exciting new rock bands of 2012. . . . the honesty of the songwriting that breaks its way into your eardrums and finds the connective vessels to your damn HEART. . . . just doing what they know how to do and doing it exactly right.” – Crawf - Tome to the Weather Machine

“Heavy Midgets are an indie-rock four piece pregnant with buzz right now. . . . with its rollicking indie-rock mood of dread and memorable vocals, the band has major potential.” - Brent Baldwin - Style Weekly

Bio

Richmond, Virginia band Heavy Midgets were formed in 2011. After a series of line-up changes the band has settled in with members Charlanne McCarthy (vocals/guitar/bass), John Graham (vocals/guitar/bass), Ian McQuary (lead guitar/backup vocals) and Bren Hall (drums). Cutting their teeth playing house shows in and around Virginia, it wasn’t long until the band began filling the local clubs and venues with regularity. Their sound is difficult to pigeon-hole, bringing together many different elements ranging from power-pop, post-punk, psychedelic, goth, surf, garage and lo-fi. The resulting sound is one that is uniquely theirs and has earned them a diverse but dedicated fan-base.

The unsigned band has released a 6-song EP titled Something Terrible and contributed 8 songs for the split LP Sisters with Richmond band TUNGS. Both were produced and distributed by Richmond label Bad Grrrl Records in 2012. The band is currently putting their final touches on a yet-to-be titled 12-song full length album, recorded by ‘Eyeball’ Jenkins, which is due to be released in the Fall of 2013.
