"HEDNOD: Look Out Boston, There's a New Kid in Town!"

HEDNOD, Bill's Bar, Dec 2007

The headliners take the stage with their anthem-esque original "So Easy" – the kind of immediately catchy song that people in the crowd can sing along to even if they've never heard it before. Hednod's motto is "a band is nothing without its fans" and "So Easy" quickly launches those fans into a frenzy, fists pumping, bodies surging to the front of the stage. Singer Joli oozes confidence and commands the stage, and the crowd, with a BIG voice and a sexy swagger.

Hednod pick up the pace with the next 2 songs – "Writhe", and "Volatile". These songs are a little more gritty, showing off the band's metal roots. "Angels" delivers a hopeful message, and sets the stage for "10 Years". This crowd fave has a solid hook that you might randomly discover yourself singing for days after the show.

Next are a couple of excellent covers – "So Cold" is as good as the original, and a forceful "Another Brick in the Wall" allows guitarist Tucker to show off his vocals, as well as a nasty guitar solo (which I was wishing was longer). They finish off their set with a couple more crowd-pleasing originals that have said crowd chanting "HED-NOD, HED-NOD" (which my Christmas-minded friend thought was "EGG-NOG, EGG-NOG").

Throughout tonight's show, the band benefited from an excellent sound mix. Hednod have a big sound that belongs on a big stage, and Hednod's engineer, John Shipp, was up to the challenge. Hednod should be seen live to be fully appreciated, and they certainly were appreciated tonight.

The members of Hednod are seasoned musicians and play with a maturity and professionalism that can only come through experience and a love for what they're doing. And why wouldn't they love it? They have garnered a devoted following through playing great music, having excellent promotion, and by being genuinely really nice people. If it's true that "a band is nothing without its fans", then Hednod are certainly something special.
