"Bain Mattox and Heidi Hensley"

Bain Mattox/Heidi Hensley live
Southeast Performer
The Evening Muse, Charlotte, NC, January 13th, 2005

THE EVENING MUSE IS A QUIET,LITTLE ACOUSTIC CLUB ON NORTH DAVIDSON. The venue has been voted the area's "Best Sounding Club." They maintain that standing by bringing quality acts to their venue on a nightly basis. The Bain Mattox band opened its sixteen night tour in Charlotte, and brought their hometown Athens friend Heidi Hensley to open the show.
Heidi Hensley has a band, but she brought only her bass player along for a quiet evening acoustic set. She sat perched on a stool sporting her "Rock On" tee-shirt while she told stories about the origins of and inspirations behind her songs. Spiritual stuff, love stuff, and everyday happenings can end up as material for her brand of acousta-girl folk, rock, and pop tunes. Hensley played a simplistic, stripped-down set, strumming her acoustic guitar while the bass melodies followed her lead. Her songs are a mix of light and dark, like a medium-brewed coffee, ready to drink. She has a versatile voice with a wide range, and the occasional falsetto would quiver over the jangly, often country-like chords.

"Critic's Picks"

Critics' Picks
Nashville Scene
HEIDI HENSLEY This singer-songwriter from Athens, GA, pops up her melodic tunes with a peppy sound that's delightfully out of step with most modern rock. The anti-diva's mix of troubadour wordplay and kickin' guitar arrangements makes her a comfortable match with such disparate acts as alt-rocker Danielle Howle and country star Jo Dee Messina. Hensley's rich arrangements and warm-yet-girlish vocals also tie her to smart folk-rockers like Jill Sobule; just when you've got her pegged, though, she'll turn around and stomp out a crunching guitar break. Georgian John keane, who has collaborated with the likes of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls, produced Hensley's eponymous EP; this show likely will feature material from that record, as well as some from the full-legnth album she's currently working on. Athens-based Heidi Hensley has released a four-song, self-titled CD of gently rocking singer/songwriter fare. While brief, it provides an impressive glimpse at a talent that deserves more attention than she's been getting from that circuit. Not sure whether she usually performs solo or with a band, but you can find our for yourself when she plays the 10 High on Thursday, Dec. 4th.

Bio

Heidi Hensley fuses an uncommon blend of modern rock and roll with alt-country and a nostalgic hint of the 80’s. This touring troubador has shared stages with the likes of the Indigo Girls, Angie Aparo, Jo Dee Messina, and more.

Heidi Hensley was donned a 2005 Critic’s Pick in the Nashville Scene. Michael McCall writes “This singer-songwriter from Athens, GA, pops up her melodic tunes with a peppy sound that's delightfully out of step with most modern rock. The anti-diva's mix of troubadour wordplay and kickin' guitar arrangements makes her a comfortable match with such disparate acts as alt-rocker Danielle Howle and country star Jo Dee Messina. Hensley's rich arrangements and warm-yet-girlish vocals also tie her to smart folk-rockers like Jill Sobule; just when you've got her pegged, though, she'll turn around and stomp out a crunching guitar break.” Don Alcott of Southeastern Performer states, “[Heidi’s] songs are a mix of light and dark, like a medium-brewed coffee, ready to drink.”

Heidi has recently teamed up with long time singer-songwriter Holly Belle to create what critics are calling an edgy mix of Ani DiFranco and Sarah McLachlan. Heidi and Holly fuse different musical styles, producing eclectic songs that transcend several genres, from pop rock to mellow alternative to indie folk.
