"Hello, Lady"

Once upon a time ago, Hello, Lady was Lea Arngrimson’s solo project. But along the way she wanted to build something more substantial, so she started doing some recruiting. She brought on Dieter Desmet to play guitar, Kyle Westberg to play bass, and Kolby Kostyniuk to bang the drums. That was back in 2012. These days, Hello, Lady has evolved into a seasoned alt-rock/alt-pop act that, upon first hearing them, sound something like if Modest Mouse teamed up with Feist and put out a record. Not exactly, mind you, but close. Hello, Lady has a sound that’s all its own, but that’s the best approximation to make. - The Verb Regina

"BLUESY-NEO-POST-PUNK-ALTERNATIVE-POP BAND , MEET HELLO LADY"

Let’s start the weekend off with some very cool alternative rock n roll. Hello Lady has that 90’s feel, big guitars, great range of styles within the EP. Rooted in a bluesy tradition, I think at times Lea gives off a little Patti Smith vibe and I can’t recall ever saying that about anybody. Almost on the punkier side of rock and that’s probably from the mix of all the talent coming out of Hello Lady. Fantastic guitar and drum work glues it all together, catchy stuff, give a listen, start your weekend off with some cool tunes…. - 50thirdand3rd

"The conversation moves from Monty Python to vanilla ice cream"

Well champs, it’s time for another Regina band interview *the crowd roars* *applause fills the room* Alternative/Indie band Hello, Ladyrecently released their EP Not for Her on Aug. 14.

The bandis currently working on a full-length album and hopes to tour all over Canada (with a little sprinkle of the States mixed in there) in the near future.

Graciously, Hello, Lady’s bass player and vocalist Kyle Westberg succumbed to my deep-seated interview questions. Enjoy.

What first got you interested in music?

My sister’s record collection.

How did your band get into the music industry?

Hello, Lady started as Lea’s solo project. [Lea Arngrimson] did that for a while, came out with an album, took a bit of a hiatus from it, and then she started it up again but wanted to do a full band type deal.

What are your future goals as a band?

We just put out an EP, so we want to put out a full-length, hopefully do a big tour of some sort to support it, look into some labels, [and] see what happens.

What is the meaning of life?

All I can think of is the Monty Python movie…watch that, and maybe you can figure it out.

What is your definition of true love?

If you’re just content with sitting around listening to records or watching cartoons with somebody for the rest of your life, then I think that’s true love.

Do you prefer reading fiction or non-fiction books?

Fiction.

Which superhero do you look up to the most?

It’s gotta be the X-Men.

If you could eliminate one of the Ten Commandments out of the Bible, which one would you eliminate?

I don’t even know what they are.

What are your greatest failures?

I regret I didn’t start school sooner. I consider that a big fail on my part.

What are your greatest successes?

This band. Yep, that’s up there I think.

Do you like cats?

No, I’m actually allergic to cats. And, even if I wasn’t, I’m not a big fan. I’m more of a dog person.

Who are your favourite sports teams?

Well I guess I’m a glutton for punishment because I’m an Edmonton Oilers fan…and the New York Mets and Chicago Bulls.

Which musicians inspire you the most?

Daniel Johns from Silverchair and Mathew Good.

Would you like your life to end with a fairytale ending or a tragic ending?

Surrounded by family…that kind of thing. Peacefully.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

False sense of entitlement. That is probably tied with complete ignorance.

If you could go back in time historically and punch anybody you wanted to with no consequences, who would you punch?

Oh, Kurt Cobain. I’d stop him from killing himself.

What are your favourite ice cream flavours?

Honestly, a cup of plain vanilla is just the best thing in the world.

Why is the sky blue?

It has something to do with the sun’s rays reflecting off the atmosphere and what not, but it is what it is you know?

What physical aspects of yourself are you most proud of?

I have a pretty awesome beard.

What areas of life do you take the most pride in?

I take pride in my job for sure and my music. I’ve been playing music for a long time, and I’ve been in a lot of bands, but I’m really proud of this one.

Which historical event do you wish never happened?

Well, the Holocaust.

Well, there ya have it people! Although I am deeply saddened by the fact that Westberg does not share my sincere love for cats, I am incredibly impressed by his wonderful beard. What a beauty. - The Carillon

"Hello to Hello, Lady"

On Sunday Hello, Lady stopped by the studio to chat and play some music for us. Two members are from Regina; Lea Arngrimson sings lead vocals and plays guitar, Stephen Macauley also plays guitar and sings backing vocals. Weyburn-based members include Terran Buck, who plays bass, Jeff Lunde who says he hits things in time, and Travis Sonnenberg, who is known as the fifth member, the sound guy.

Hello, Lady describes their music Alternative Indie Rock, though their sound is still forming and evolving. Lea explains where she sees it going, "I think eventually it'll meld into a very distinct sound... I hope eventually you'll hear it and be like, 'Hey, that's Hello, Lady!' What genre is that? That's a Hello, Lady genre". Each member brings a unique element and a variety of influences, which reflects in their quirky, catchy, edgy sound.

Seeing the group together, it quickly becomes very apparent how much fun they have and how well they gel. "I think we have more fun just with each other too, outside of the music. And it allows us to play whatever we feel is fun and we just click. I donno. We're having a blast right now, and it's Sunday!" Fun is very important to these guys. As Jeff Lunde points out, "If you can't have fun with it, then what's the point in doin' it?"

They performed an acoustic version of their catchy song “Petty Shameful” in studio. Hear the whole interview in the podcast section to the right. - Weyburn Rock 103.9
