"MP sets course for Sailor Jerry to “Rock the House”"

THE FINALISTS for the Rock The House 2011 have been announced. Five finalists will compete for the coveted title of the UK’s Best Unsigned Live band.

Local band the Sailor Jerry’s as nominated by Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price has been chosen as one of the final five.

Altogether 59 MPs put forward local bands, chosen in many cases from a number of applicants. They will play a live set, along with the four other finalists, in front of a panel of heavy weight music industry professionals, who will decide who is the overall winner.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held on terraces of the House of Commons on 30th June, and will then play a short set in front of the assembled guests. This in itself will be history in the making, as amplified music has never before been played at a House of Commons function.

Mike Weatherley, the MP whose brainchild the competition has been, said, “We have been overwhelmed not only by the number of bands applying, but also the quality of the acts and their commitment to the Rock The House cause. “

Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price said, “I am so pleased for the Sailor Jerrys. As soon as I heard their track I knew they would be in with a chance of winning and I was pleased to nominate them. I wish them every success in the finals and will be bringing in some of my colleagues to cheer them on.” - Your Thurrock Publusher

Sailor Jerry grab second spot at Rock the House in parliament

After making the final of ‘Rock the House’ the Sailor Jerry’s were pipped at the post by another Essex Band ‘Angry and the Bear’.

The competition saw 60 Members of Parliament sponsor an unsigned local band to enter the competition to win a variety of prizes including the opportunity to perform at the House of Commons.

Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price said, “For a band that has only been together for 8 months, the Sailor Jerry’s have done fantastically well and impressed a lot of people. I am really pleased for them. They were pipped at the post by Colchester based band, proving that Essex has got talent.”

The Band won a prize package which includes the design of a band logo and a video master class.

Jackie said, “This is a great band with great style and great enthusiasm. I am sure they will go on from strength to strength.” - Your Thurrock Publusher

Bio

We're a 3 piece band from East London meeting at college being the mature students and loving each others sound. Hannah the lead singer and guitarist has influences from underground bands in the East London scene, and into indie and folk. Holly, the bass player and backing vocalist's influences are from 80's era of electro pop and younger bands who also got influences from them. Depeche Mode and Placebo being a couple to name. Alex is the South American rocker, whose big influences are in the heavy metal scene, although he does have a softer side liking Alanis Morisette!
All the influences have been twisted into a unique and brilliant sound, making it hard to place into a genre. But its closest to grunge, alternative and rock.
Hannah's haunting vocals paired with Holly's bluesy sound with superb drumming makes the mix amazing. Then its all tied up in Hannah's genius guitar playing.
We are currently looking for venues to gig, and working slowly on an EP. And we'll soon be recording a music video! Keep watching!
But we have a huge passion for music and love.
