"[fresh] heathers//teenage clothes"

With any kind of move, one has to inventory past experiences, laying some to rest and saving others as experiential knowledge. When the principle mind behind Heathers , Michael Avishay, left Portland after college to move to his native LA, he left behind his most popular and personal music project to date, Ghost Animal. And so Heathers began, first as an idea–based on the belief that uncomplicated melodies retain the most meaning and are accessible to everyone. With their first official track ‘Teenage Clothes,’ the harmonies ebb and flow and the early-Slumberland and Sarah Records adoration is beautifully-apparent. Yet nothing is passe about this track, influences are always easy to name but in this case they are mostly drowned out with the freshness of the tune.” - Weekly Tape Deck

"Week in Pop"

In Southern California there is a band that takes you back to that place where it seemed everyone you know was an Ashley, Tiffany, or the name that this indie pop trio has reappropriated with their moniker, Heathers. The LA band with the cult film name consists of Michael on guitars and vocals, Thom on bass and vocals and Ricardo on drums, where the mission statement rings of the jangle instituted sounds of UK indie 1985, the hearts are big with the single "Teenage Clothes" where the sentimentality is worn on their well pressed sleeves as Michael and Thom bemoan; "there's no easy way to say...stay, stay...". Introduce yourself on the Facebook and listen more on their Bandcamp. - IMPOSE Magazine

"Spring 2k13 playlist"

Seven minutes long? You what? In an age when we can’t stay focussed for more than 30 seconds? Yep, and it’s one of the best things you’ll hear in 2013, hands down. - Wayne Flanagan

"Heathers: MEET"

L.A. trio Heathers offer up infectious jangly indie pop that’s actually good. No matter how much you deny it, this is a genre that’s hard to get right but Michael, Thom and Ricardo have made it look – and sound – as easy as pie.

First hitting our radar thanks to the team at NEU, Heathers released ‘Teenage Clothes’ back in March. We instantly fell in love with it, grabbing all of our pals to rant and rave about how great it sounded. It harks back to the summer days when all you had to worry about was whether that guy in your maths set would remember you come September.

The understated vocals and subtle harmonies make it an instant sing-a-long whilst still allowing the track to stay out of twee-territory. There’s currently two tracks up for grabs on the band’s bandcamp, with second offering ‘Colossi of Memnon’ showcasing a darker, more atmospheric side to the three-piece. This is a band that could almost be as great and iconic as our favourite Winona Ryder movie. Almost. - Yankie

"Heathers - Colossi of Memnon"

LA group Heathers have finally broken the silence once more with another release titled Colossi of Memnon. This nice little number has got a very 60's vibe about it and I’m a really huge fan. I hope there is plenty more like this in store from a debut album of these guys and you should definitely look out for them. Listen to the track below. - TinMan London

"Introducing: Heathers - Colossi of Memnon"

L.A upstarts Heathers have been whispered about for a few months now, having released the jangling "Teenage Clothes" not so long ago. Their latest track (entitled "Colossi of Memnon"), however, is an unexpected turn for the better.

The songs stop start motion is almost "Miserable Lie" esque, albeit notably grittier, it must be said. It still rings effortlessly poetic though, with lines like "hide your love where no one lies, hide your faith in empty skies". Then there is that stirring build up that kind of makes the song, as it races away to the cries of "bad dreams, bad dreams!". We could say it in a far more respectable manner, but it's fucking brilliant, to be wholly frank. Listen below, download it for 'whatever you like' here. - One for the People

"The Neu Bulletin"

Back in March we raved about just how ruddy excellent the jangly indie pop of Heathers' track 'Teenage Clothes' was. Since then the LA three-piece have kept us waiting, left to imagine how future songs might sound and wonder whether 'Teenage Clothes' was a one-off. Turns out it wasn't. 'Colossi of Memnon' is a bit of a departure from their previous sound - more expansive sitting at over seven minutes in length and considerably slower paced (at least to start with). Bleedin' good. [Jake May] - This is Fake DIY

"Heathers "Teenage Clothes""

The first track unveiled by new-ish-ish LA popkids Heathers last week is a top-shelf jangler, with just enough west coast fuzz around the edges that you could probably even convince your wavvves coast friends to take it for a spin. It sounds like Coca-Colas (with whiskey? Maybe. I know Michael would approve.) and swimming pools, or maybe an endless loop of that moment on the log plume where you hit the water at the bottom of the first big drop. And this is all amidst an 18 degree wind chill. I can only imagine how great this will sound when it’s not soundtracking an east coast Winter. I give it 3 out of 4 Zac Efrons. - Skatterbrain!

"Crushing on the Heathers [sic]"

There’s an under-appreciated world of good pop music blogs out there, and one I can always trust is Skatterbrain. The site turned me onto the Heathers [sic] earlier this week, and I’m stuck jamming this track non-stop. There’s a brightness to the guitar sound, and the drums sound sloppily tight, giving a kicking groove that bubbles beneath the central hook. As of right now, this is the first recording from the LA group, but on this song alone, I have high hopes that they’ll do some more work soon, bringing many more casual smiles to music nerds like myself. - Austin Town Hall

"n/a"

LA’s Heathers make some incredibly sincere indie-pop on their first offering “Teenage Clothes”. A slight rough around the edges, yet lovable tale that is too good not to enjoy every single night. - HANDCLAP MOVEMENT

"Heathers Contemporaries are rife, but Heathers are an LA trio with plenty more to give."

Name: Heathers
Based: Los Angeles
Listen: 'Teenage Clothes'
Similar to: LA’s answer to The Smiths?

The U.S, as always, is currently responsible for a huge heap of exciting new music making its way across the pond. You've Parquet Courts, Skaters, Drowners, you name it, all from New York. And on the West-Coast DIY faves FIDLAR, recently profiled Bleached and LA newcomers Heathers are making waves over on the other side. The States are in good health.

Having only formed in October 2012, Heathers, the latest band in question have just one readily available song titled ‘Teenage Clothes’, which is available to download for free over on the group's Bandcamp page. Encapsulating a crunchy, distorted guitar line that shimmers and shines with glimmers of surf-rock, and gritty garage, there are also room for hints of The Smiths, which manage to sneak in midway through the track. That all stems from the maudlin lyrical anecdotes from Michael Avishay. It's in contrast to the song’s jaunty, direct approach. And then you've the cover art for the single; one that strongly resembles the style of the Mancunian indie icons’ 7” sleeves. Contemporaries are rife, but Heathers are an LA trio with plenty more to give. - This is Fake DIY

"I LISTENED TO THIS TODAY: Heathers - Teenage Clothes"

Heathers have a Husker Du lite feel, so I was always going to be seduced by their bouncy and indeed grungey, indiepop charms – there’s a hint of The Drums too. I love the harmonies and the fact it’s short, sweet and seemingly recorded in a bathroom.

39/43 - Honey&Bile

"LISTEN: Heathers - Teenage Clothes"

Back at the end of January we were lucky enough to catch a solo acoustic performance from Michael of Ghost Animal. After the show we chatted about Belle and Sebastian mainly, but he mentioned that he was about to launch a new band called Heathers back in his native Los Angeles.

Two months later and a quick look at Basement Fever and I see that the three piece from LA have unveiled their first track titled ‘Teenage Clothes’. The first time I listened to it I immediately thought of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, but that’s totally a good thing.

The trio made up of Ricardo, Michael and Thom have obvious potential. ‘Teenage Clothes’ is bursting with soothing melodies, blissful guitars and catchy lyrics. It has certainly whet my appetite for more, check it out below: - Gold Sounds

"Heathers - Teenage Clothes"

Heathers is a brand new band (which I would have never found if not for Weekly Tape Deck, so shout out to them) that formed when Michael Avishay left Portland (and his band Ghost Animal) to return to LA. Now Avishay has formed Heathers, which switches the noise surf-pop Avishay use to make for clean, breezy, C-86 perfection in every sense. "Teenage Cloths" is just insanely infectious indie-pop perfection, the same jangle addiction that Weed Hounds crafted with "Skating Away from the Cops", minus the shoegaze sheen which is slightly more impressive. Describing earworms is a near pointless endevor though, so just listen to the near three minutes of pop bliss Heatehrs managed to craft, their very first song too. - The Creative Intersection

Los Angeles three-piece Heathers formed in October last year (at least if we trust their Facebook page) and last week they released their debut track "Teenage Clothes" as a free download on their Bandcamp page. "Teenage Clothes" is a brilliantly catchy garage pop tune and you can listen to it below. Cheers to Jake from Basement Fever for the tip. - Birds Need Feet

Bio

Heathers are a miserablist guitar-pop band founded in Los Angeles in late 2012 by Michael Francis and Thom Lucero. After playing a few months' worth of shows with their original drummer, Ricardo Sanchez, they were joined by Michael Wegener in September 2013, completing the current lineup. The band have released two 7" singles through Francis's own Death Party Records imprint to a great deal of positive press, both in the US and in the UK. In April 2014 the band booked their own UK tour. In May, the band made their NYC debut at Littlefield for NYC Popfest. The band are currently prepping their debut album, which they will record in Los Angeles this summer.
