HI-GH

L' "operazione nostalgia" del metal italiano tricolore degli anni '80 si infrange clamorosamente, e senza appello, di fronte a dischi come questo "Till death and after" dei giovanissimi romani Hi-gh.

In certi circoli metallari italiani si confonde creatività e talento con carta d'identità e dati anagrafici, sostenendo erroneamente la tesi che solo chi ha vissuto i famigerati Eighties possa sentire e vivere il vero spirito del metal ... su queste fragili considerazioni si basa essenzialmente il lavoro di conservazione "in vitro" delle "icone", vere o presunte, del metal italiano che fu... mi sto riferendo esplicitamente alle bands Hard'n'Heavy più tradizionali degli anni 80, i cosidetti "pionieri" il cui unico merito, spesso, è stato solo quello di essere nati prima.... ben oltre la soglia del mito costruito a tavolino, sono stati davvero pochissimi i gruppi di vero spessore artistico nati in quegli anni, e a scriverlo è uno di quei pochi cretini che all'epoca comprava tutti i loro dischi. Tutti, senza esclusione.... quando sostenere quei gruppi aveva un senso.

Ma il passato è là, irraggiungibile ..... oggi c'è un bel numero di bands giovani, che è di gran lunga superiore alla maggior parte dei redivivi loosers di 30 anni fa, il cui stato dell'arte attuale suona falso come il peggiore dei make up.....

Detto che le influenze musicali, attitudinali e stilistiche dei giovani gruppi e dei meno tali sono le medesime, la domanda da farsi è chi sia realmente in grado oggi di realizzare le prove migliori... oggi, adesso....

Senza mezzi termini, un disco come "Till death and after", assieme a pochi altri, segna finalmente il passo fra il vecchio classico metal suonato da giovani gruppi e quello stagionato, ridotto a macchietta da tanti vecchi sedicenti "guru" degli anni 80, impiegati di mezza età incapaci di scrivere un pezzo decente più o meno dal 1988...

In appena 2 anni di attività, gli Hi-gh hanno fatto progressi esponenziali; il demo di partenza non faceva prevedere lo svolgersi degli eventi futuri, e il seguente full length "Night dances" si distingueva per un approccio anomalo allo Speed'n' thrash più tradizionale, aggiungendo dosi non sempre sapienti di punk e, (sacrilegio!) psichedelia!!! ....Ora dopo aver sostituito per motivi extra-musicali il drummer-fondatore Ovidio con il terremotante Tito "Oki" e aver cambiato etichetta scegliendone una dall'ottica e prospettiva internazionale (l'ottima Metal on Metal Records), gli Hi-gh si trovano adesso a maneggiare una piccola bomba che poco concede alle precedenti "sbandate" stilistiche ...... le eccellenti "Deal of death" e "Born under evil defence" sono pezzi che si possono suonare ma difficilmente scrivere e arrangiare in tale maniera, e ciò a mio parere indica la differenza fra un gruppo qualsiasi e un gruppo vero.

Gli Hi-gh, a parte il new-comer Tito, sono effettivamente un gruppo, una vera entità che oltre a suonare, pensa collettivamente.

Dal punto di vista creativo sono ben tre le "menti" dietro il moniker, e nessuno si limita ad assecondare i "dictat" di qualsivoglia "leader" di turno... Oltre al riff-maker d'élite Marco "Psyki", la solista di Marco "Red eyes" spesso fa la differenza, e talvolta i suoi assoli, come si diceva una volta, "make you shiver down your spine...". Ottima la voce perfida di Tommaso "Slowly", uno che non deve far finta di essere cattivo, come fanno tanti altri suo colleghi con il pannolone...... Preferisco tralasciare le sue liriche.... non esattamente un poeta, ma lo perdono.

Potrei definire lo stile degli Hi-gh come un compendio di Speed/Thrash anni '80 non privo di interessanti fusioni con l'ala più oltranzista della N.W.O.B.H.M..... Insomma, una cosetta tutt'altro che facile da realizzare, e realizzare bene! Solo "Your bloody face", "Devils fire" e la conclusiva cover degli Hastiged (ex gruppo di Tommaso e Ovidio) "German metal attack" rinsaldano lo stile della band al suo recentissimo passato .... Per il resto, l'attitudine "punkish" che ne ha segnato gli esordi, rimane sullo sfondo...

Se questo "Till death and after", insieme a poche altre recenti releases, segnerà il definitivo passaggio di consegne fra il nuovo corso del metal tradizionale e le vecchie glorie incapaci di arrendersi, solo per meriti effettivi e non per leccate di culo a destra e manca, solo il tempo potrà dirlo.

I’m going to say it right now: HI-GH is a fucking cool band.

These Italian Thrash/Speed/Punk/Whatever-you-want-to-call-them metallers began their journey in 2012. One EP and debut full-length later, we have “Till Death and After” in 2014. The funny thing about this band, is the excitement at first listen. It’s not often I get to experience metal like this, that carries the same kind of vibe. Mash up DESTRUCTION with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, up the tempo a couple of notches.

Following a rather strange intro, the title track weens us into the music with a lovely 3-minute taster. If anything, they’re a proper Speed Metal act at heart, and this track is here to show it; frantic, classic Thrash riffs are played at ridiculous tempos, with memorable melody and chord progressions. I was rather surprised by the production quality, too; oftentimes I’ll hear “new old Thrash”, and it sounds like a muddy, hodge-podge mess; but the studio work put into this album is stellar; meat-and-potatoes, no frills, excellent tones all-round. This is especially evident in “Sex Machine”, which features an extensive display of the band’s repertoire as musicians; groovy, Hard Rock one minute; IRON MAIDEN-esque NWOBHM riffs the next, before we’re assaulted with an epic arrangements of melodies and cutting-edge bass lines, and back to a cannon-firing of delectable Thrash. Definitely one of the more melodic and memorable tracks on the album.

“Born Under Evil Defiance” becomes one of the Thrashier pieces on the record; something I would not expect after the bleedingly-obvious NWOBHM influences in the introductory riffs; gallops and harmonized guitar-melodies galore. Further listening pops a blister that oozes with heavy, chuggy, aggressive riffing, not too reminiscent of later MEGADETH (the GOOD later) albums; ENDGAME comes to mind. “Deal of Death”, at times, features some of the album’s fastest playing, but also contains some of the album’s best riffs, treading that thin sweet-spot between heaviness and memorability, the arrangement is truly stellar.

This is one vinyl I will be on the hunt for; it’s refreshing to see new, young Thrash bands paying homages to other genres that undoubtedly shaped the scene, but I can’t help but thinking this band could be revolutionary. - Daniel Fox

Aus Rom kommt dieses junge Quartett und hat mit „Til Death And After" bereits ihr zweites Album auf dem Markt. Bevor wieder das altbekannte Vorurteil aufkommt, dass aus Italien nur Zuckerwatte-Kapellen wie Rhapsody und Kollegen kommen, dem will mal sofort den Wind aus den Segeln nehmen, denn mit so einem Sound haben die Römer genauso viel zu tun, wie der Papst mit Poppen.

Nein, bei HI-GH geht es schnurgerade zurück in die glorreichen Achtziger, als die Hosen eng und die Kutten speckig waren! Lupenreiner Speed Metal wird hier gespielt, der nicht nur herrlich altmodisch ist, sondern vor allem eine ganze Menge Spaß macht! Geile Riffs, coole Soli und dazu eine sehr schön passende räudige Stimme von Sänger „Tommaso Slowly". Was mir besonders gut bei der Band gefällt, ist neben der ungeheuren Spielfreude der ordentliche Punk-Einschlag. Dieser hebt die Band nicht nur angenehm von anderen „80er-Retro-Bands" ab, sondern gibt den Songs den gewissen „Kick". So hat richtiger Metal nämlich zu klingen: Rotzig, unangepasst und gegen Gesellschaft und den bösen Mainstream gerichtet!

Die Optik der Musiker passt dazu wie Arsch auf Eimer (Stallion lassen grüßen!) und auch das Cover ist zum fremdschämen schön!! Klar geht es vorwiegend um die Musik, aber ich persönlich finde es immer sehr fein, wenn das Gesamtpaket stimmt - und das stimmt hier 100%ig! Wenn dann noch solch geile Songs wie „Sex Machine" oder den total coolen Rausschmeißer „German Metal Attack" (eine Coverversion der mir völlig unbekannten Hastighed), was soll da noch schief gehen?

Saucooler, altmodischer Speed/Punk Metal, der eigentlich jedem gefallen sollte, der in seinem Metal-Herz auch nur die kleinste Stelle hat, auf der fett „80er" steht!!!

Una de las bandas que desde que tomas en tus manos la caratula ya sabes de qué va. Unas canciones que al principio recuerdan a Venom (“We are the end of All”, “White Car Fever”) en su vertiente menos cruda, pero que luego se van uniendo influencias y vas descubriendo que hay partes de thrash de la Bay Area, (“The Russian Border”) de Speed Metal básico de estilo ochentero, (“Sex Machine”) y que sobre todo, esto se trata de tocar rápido y alto.

Este es el segundo álbum de HI-GH, y como su nombre indica, así es como suena la música. Una banda para divertirse, y de esas que cuando la pones en el coche debes extremar las precauciones porque te lleva y posiblemente sobrepases el límite de velocidad.

“Drug Your Destiny” tiene un riffs de los facilones, de los que siempre te llevaran a moverte. Es una canción que recuerda a los Iron Maiden del Killer, ideas que reaparecerán en otras composiciones como “Deal of Death". “Born Under Evil Defence” recuerda en el estilo vocal a esas bandas del aquel primigenio thrash metal cuando se cantaba con voz aguda, pero como no todo está cantado con el mismo timbre, también hay destellos de la entonación de Araya.

Por momentos encontramos algunas influencias del punk ("Your Bloody Face"), quizás porque en cierta medida hay un toque de Motorhead (“Devil’s Fire”) en la música de este grupo. Es algo que particularmente me ha llamado la atención, y es que con riffs básicos, sencillos y de dos o tres simples acordes no solo arman una canción, sino que además la hacen buena y pegadiza. ¿Cuál es ese gran secreto?

Y por otra parte, cuando escuchas las dobles guitarras, el solo y la estructura de canciones como “Born Under Evil Defence”, te das cuenta que el grupo tiene conocimientos técnicos y musicales suficientes para alcanzar mayor complejidad.

El CD termina con una versión de un grupo desconocido. Se titula "German Metal Attack", y la banda era Hastighed, una formación de black/thrash donde el vocalista y bajista Tommaso "Slowly" estuvo antes de formar HI-GH.

There is still room for inspired music in the thrash metal scene, even 30 years after the initial wave of speed and thrash bands emerged from the underground and hit the record shelves. And if we take a closer listen to the young Italian act HI-GH from Rome, you will find them being more like a crossover act than following a clearly defined generic path. Highly melodic, yet infernally boiling classic heavy metal lead guitars sprawl upon massive chord progressions with an utterly catchy approach. I suppose before creating this album HI-GH dug through layers over layers of metal history and they really did manage to find the essence of raging music on which they build up their songs. They play with power and hearts burning from positive fury but they are always good for a surprising glimpse of utter joy when they throw in a pure hard rock`n`roll song making your limbs move until they steam and they even dare to leave the earth and drift into a 70s inspired space rock direction for the album closer which is for sure an interesting act of creativity for those who freely love music and a challenge for those who may rather stick to the border of a certain genre or prefer at least to listen to pure generic music. But in the end the one half will enjoy an outstanding space rock performance from this band, the other half will press the stop button after the last regular speed and thrash metal eruption ends. As I said before, this band goes further than just typical speed and thrash metal. Elements of raw edged punk rock and classic pathos driven heavy metal fire up the boiling compositions and when a good dose of earthy and dirty street rock`n`roll gets injected, this cocktail just explodes into your brain. And while they set your soul ablaze, HI-GH just climb up the level of our ancient 80s legends such as BLESSED DEATH, HALLOW`S EVE, SLAYER, METALLICA or D.R.I., to name a few. Still this band is so utterly charismatic with a singer growling like a raging berserker or singing in a more melodic and heroic style. This band definitely has the right spirit and you cannot even call them retro for they are absolutely original. Thrash metal can still be an exciting experience if bands just let their creativity flow loosely. HI-GH did so and have forged one of these albums to enjoy eternally. - Sir Lord Doom
