Bio
The name Hibiscus Promiscuous is indicative of the music it creates. Just as it is informed by the familiar, organic elements of life, it is informed by the music that reaches one's soul despite the confines of genre. Composed of vocalist and guitarist Matt Green and drummer Maureik Robison, Hibiscus Promiscuous incorporates the abundance of possibilities within the collective members' experiences to create largely acoustic, groove-driven music to any, and every, individual willing to listen.
Drummer Maureik Robison was performing with another act at an Open Mic at Florida State University. Soon after, Matt Green performed a solo set. They exchanged numbers and, weeks later, the duo was formed. Hibiscus began playing around Tallahassee at various open mics and were influential in developing the "house show" circuit throughout the area.
Influences were what brought the duo together. Often seen carpooling, Hibiscus would share music with each other en route to different shows: from Ornette Coleman to Regina Spektor, from James Taylor to The Roots and from Ben Folds to Prince. These musicians, as well as others and even artists from other disciplines, have influenced the writing of the group.
Not only have those influences informed the writing of the band, but it is what sets Hibiscus Promiscuous apart from other bands. With a controlled sound, they focus on rhythmic contour and harmonic texture to express what needs to be said. A Hibiscus show will have you singing along to a 90s Medley (that includes Destiny's Child and Paula Abdul) and then hanging on every word of an original song with true meaning behind it.
