HIDROLYX
Billed as “Weapons of Mass Seduction”, this band is single handedly reviving the Houston Metal Underground. They’re bad, they’re beautiful and they’re all of 16 years old! Don’t let that fool you, they play with the talent and ferocity of old school veterans!

Metal Monthly
Weapons of Mass Seduction!!! Brilliant! Who came up with that and why isn't it plastered all over town?

Hidrolyx
A: Jessica made it up as a joke, and it just kinda stuck. Hopefully you'll soon see it all over!

Metal Monthly
2. Tell me about the name HIDROLYX. Where did it come from? Does everyone in the band agree with it? Is there a special or hidden meaning behind it?

Hidrolyx
A: It came from a former band member because she liked cars. She didn't spell it right though. [They laugh] Vanessa and Jessica wanted to change the name a while back but we already had somewhat of a name with "Hidrolyx", so we thought, "Eh, it fits our style."

Metal Monthly
3. Who are the band's 3 major influences?

Hidrolyx
A: Music, love, and hate.

Metal Monthly
4. The first thing I noticed about Hidrolyx, other than the fact that you were predominately female and very young, was the way you presented yourselves. Your attitude, stage presence, delivery, everything was perfect! You looked like a seasoned, professional band of 10 or more years! How do you explain this?

Hidrolyx
A: Most of us have been working for this for a long time. Since we were very young. It just comes kinda naturally for us. It's hard to explain how we feel on stage, we don't try to act a certain way, it's just whatever comes to us.

Metal Monthly
5. Ok! I said predominately female. Cheetoe, you are the only guy in a band full of gals. In the immortal words of Dr Phil, "How does that make you feel?"

Hidrolyx
A: [smiles] "It feels cool. It's a weird phenomenon." [laughs]

Metal Monthly
6. Ladies! Why did you choose Cheetoe and not continue looking for a female drummer?

Hidrolyx
A: We chose Cheetoe because when he came to try out, he really impressed us. He merged with our music so well. And looking for a female drummer, well there's no point to it, really. We have such a strong bond together that if we were to loose Cheetoe, it would be like loosing a brother. He keeps the band balanced.

Metal Monthly
7. I don't mean to drive the "teenage girl" thing into the ground but, America's image of teen fem artists lean toward Lizzie McGuirre and Hannah Montana! How did Hidrolyx come into being? Who were the founders? Why metal?

Hidrolyx
A: Courtney and Zero are basically the founders of the band. They met each other through a local music store. Courtney had posted a bulletin looking for another musician to jam with. They bonded really well and started taking things a lot more serious. There was already a bassist and a drummer before Hidrolyx started playing out, but they were doing it just for fun. The former members weren't serious, but Zero and Courtney were ready to start taking things to the next level. Zero had a friend, being our current bassist Vanessa, that she suggested to join the band. With a small core, they needed a drummer. That's where Cheetoe came in. They were all serious and ready to go. We played about ten shows together as a four piece, when we decided we wanted to have a lead singer, so Zero and Court could move around more on stage instead of doing both guitars and vocals. We had two previous singers before Chelsea joined, but now that she is in the band, we feel complete! We chose metal because that's the kind of music we prefer. We just express ourselves through grungy riffs, rather than pop, that couldn't even come close to covering our emotions.

Metal Monthly
8. Who writes the songs and what are your inspirations?

Hidrolyx
A: We all sit together and write songs as a band. We have various inspirations, some dealing with the things that happen around us, and others that we can't deal with ourselves. It's whatever comes our of our head, really.

Metal Monthly
9. Chelsea! And Zero, you can chime in. Any formal vocal training? Choir? Voice lessons?

Hidrolyx
A: I took 3 years of professional opera lessons. During that time, I was just trying to find my voice so I'd fool around with some friends who played different instruments. I was also in choir for a long time, as well as Zero who was involved in a small choir.

Metal Monthly
10. Tell me about the extreme metal vox! Chelsea, you have a growl that is deeper and more powerful than a lot of professional male vocalists I have heard. How do you pull that off? And how do you keep it up night after night?

Hidrolyx
A: The first time I figured out I could scream was during tryouts for Hidrolyx. We were playing our song "Drowning" and I got realy into it and BAM....I screamed. I was so excited! [laughs] After a while I started just fooling around on the mic during practice and one day I went really low and we w - Metal Monthly

Bio

Courtney was inspired to start a band.
She had a bass player, Fraidy, and a drummer Valerie, but still needed a second guitarist.
She put flyers up everywhere.
Until she got a phone call from Zero.
Zero picked up a flyer at a local Music Store, called Courtney, and said that she had a bass player, Vanessa with her, and they would like to try out for the band.
Well, since Hidrolyx already had a bassist, Vanessa could not play.
Zero suggested they get another drummer, seeing as how Valerie didn't seem like her dedication was music, Fraidy knew Alex Sanchez. He came to try out, and Zero threatened to quit if Courtney didn't let him in. So he stayed :).
A few months later Fraidy had to quit due to personal issues with her family.
So we went ahead and got Vanessa in.
Hidrolyx was a four piece for a while, until Zero decided that they needed a front woman.
They had try outs and Miriam was recruited.
They played for about a year with her, then she left for other beliefs.
And try outs resumed.
Chelsea Culbreth came to try out, and she has amazing dedication and has been with the band since.
