Bio

From the buzzing lights of Hot Springs, Arkansas to the stages of Nashville, comes the sister sensation known as Highland Sky. This duo compiles elements of early Dixie Chicks, Michelle Branch, and the soulful honesty of Sheryl Crow. With their “Bring Me Home” EP now on iTunes and shows on the calendar, Highland Sky is a homegrown experience that has real, raw talent.

The sisters grew up in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas where they began performing from an early age on stage together at their family’s music and variety show “The Bath House Show” (1988-2008). Featuring music from the 1930s through today, the show was a huge success by bringing family fun and entertainment to more than 2,000,000 patrons and locals combined in its time.

“Marcilee and I were so fortunate to have that experience, and I know we will never forget it. We are forever grateful to our family that allowed us to perform on stage for so many years. The show cultivated us into the musicians and ladies we are today,” Katie says.

Outside of the family show, the sisters grew up studying classical music. Since the early age of 3, the sisters were trained on piano, and by the age of 8, both started on violin. The sisters say, “Our mother, Kelley, has a remarkable voice and growing up, we remember listening to many different genres of music from gospel, pop, alternative, and country with her; analyzing everything to the players, producers, and lyrics. We even remember watching The Grammys and CMAs every year; she always picked out the song or album of the year! She truly had a knack for great music,” Marcilee recalls.

During their upbringing, the sisters learned to play several different instruments including piano, mandolin, violin, drums, and guitar. You can find them picking up something new probably every time you see them perform. Marcilee says, “we love learning new instruments, and with much respect, we call it a ‘Barbara Mandrell’ thing. It’s inspiring to see great versatile musicians like Ms. Mandrell.”

With the move to Nashville in 2009 to continue their music studies at local universities (Katie in music business and Marcilee in classical piano performance), it really boosted the thought of a permanent career in music. Marcilee says, “We always knew we would continue to be in music, and forming a country duo just felt natural in the next step of our lives. This new season is so exciting and challenging for us. There’s nothing like family harmonies and as a result ‘Highland Sky’ is born. Yeah!!!!”

Katie and Marcilee reminiscence, “It was pretty tough at first to try and figure out who we were as artists, especially as a duo. We had previously been imitating other artists and putting our own spin on the performance at our family show our whole lives. However, once we started on our own project it truly began writing itself. It’s happened so rapidly, and we couldn’t be happier or so grateful.”

In February of 2011, Highland Sky landed help from producer/engineer and friend, Eric Green, who opened up his studio to the duo to begin tracking their EP. With a handful of Nashville’s finest musicians, the EP was finished and mastered in less than a month. “Bring Me Home” was launched on iTunes on June 15, 2011.

Highland Sky's music is uniquely their own. One reviewer states Highland Sky’s music is “something fresh that has an original yet accessible sound.” “That is huge to us to be able to have a fresh unique sound and one day, fingers-crossed, you’ll know that’s Highland Sky on the radio without hesitation,” says sister Katie.

You can currently find the duo performing at different venues in Nashville, TN.
