Great live performance by Highway Road, a new Chicago jam band, synergy, simplicity, and spirituality; it was all there. They sound like a mix of the Bob Weir a bit with a bluegrass, folk and jazzy feel. Funk need not apply.
Peace! - 88.3FM WVAX Chicago/Loyola

"New jam band Highway Road"

Chicago Jam Band To See.........

Url: http://www.highwayroad.com
Kind people,

Let it be known, there is original music out there that still makes you move like the Grateful Dead did or Panic does. You have to go see Highway Road. I think their playing on Saturday, March 13 at Gunther's for an early show. Anyone want to grab a tall one and listen to some jammin music. Don't forget to bring your green wear since I think Gunther Murphy's is having a special party so that is why Highway Road is playing so early, 7-9pm. See you there.

"Highway Road"

Highway Road in Chicago
02/12/2004

I stopped by the Beat Kitchen on Thursday night drinking a few cocktails with some friends and heard a great sound coming from the back room. The first band SweetMama Gumbo were pretty cool. Highway Road really jammed out and had a sort of unique sound. I really liked the songs and look forward to seeing them around town.

Bio

Matt started the band hearing the sounds of Erik Smith on Lead Guitar, from the Jerry Garcia Band (Melvin Seals) and former bandmate for several years in Uncle John's Band, a Grateful Dead cover band. Marty Kondziolka on Drums combines three out of the four that have been on the "Road ". I remember the day's Erik and I would sit around in my basement, listening the Dead, critiquing each note and missed vocal part, but we built a hard-t0-find duo, one that's instrumentally tight, each feeding off one another; like Bobby and Jerry, so we want to think. Long time bassist, Jeff Bartlett comes to Highway Road from Major's Junction, a local Chicago band and old-time friend who loves to jam and fills the gap with exceptional bass leads. I would have to say that our music sounds like our influences, and we dig deep into the roots of Rock music, blues, bluegrass, and folk music: Grateful Dead, Beatles, Widespread Panic, Phish, Steely Dan, Doc Watson, Robert Johnson; to name a few. We promote the original music and dedicate to the artist, bands and musicians out there who are right there with us, and of course, the fans. A fan is our most important promoter and Highway Road understands that, and focuses our music on creating influential jam band music that relates to all music lovers. The mission is to gather that community of people together again and recreate a world of music, peace, and good times. We love to jam and sometimes will end up in a path that's very psychedelic. Erik is so versatile on the guitar it allows Highway Road to expand the music on stage and any song can become an intense jam at any time.
