Midwest Musical Duo Bringing Unique Brand of Bluegrass and Americana to Rocky Mountain Region Next Week

Denver, CO – Kansas based storytellers Hillside Stomp have announced a series of upcoming tour stops in Colorado that will include engagements at the legendary Little Bear Saloon in Evergreen and Denver’s hottest “new band” hang—Herman’s Hideaway.

Comprised of vocalist/mandolin/guitarist Evan Ogborn and singer/guitarist Alex Russi, the Stomp have built an enthusiastic online following from their hometown of Wichita, Kansas in the months since their inception. Both college students with varying musical backgrounds, the pair has hatched a sound that combines furious picking with gritty, honest lyrics that offer no apologies. Words to songs like “Baby Say” and “Owe Me” are so lacking in sentimentality that they leave listeners feeling refreshingly uncomfortable. Weekly appearances at a favorite local nightspot, John Barleycorn’s, confirmed the guys’ early suspicions that they were onto something.

Quick to shy away from the words “folk” or “cowpunk,” Russi and Ogborn aren’t surprised that they get compared to fellow Kansas group Split Lip Rayfield. “We got to see them as teenagers and that was big for us,” says Russi. “Those musicians are full of attitude, and that comes across…” Of their own musical slant, he says, “We’re not performing traditional bluegrass music. We [Evan and I] are telling a lot of stories as songwriters, so performing in a way that conveys the narrative of the lyric is vital for us.”

According to Evan Ogborn, comparisons to the guitar/mandolin team of Chris Thile and Michael Daves are flattering to a point. “Their album is great, but we have our own kind of music that differentiates us from those guys.” Others agree. YouTube videos of recent Hillside Stomp performances have indie record label execs looking at the band as one to market in 2014. Their 5-song EP can be heard at www.revernation.com/hillsidestomp.

Bio

Hillside Stomp is a duo of flatpickers taking on the bluegrass genre. We are from middle America and we play raw compositions full of technical finesse. We sing about the residue of Victorian culture in America and we listen to a lot of Split Lip Rayfield and Chris Thile. This project is built on being rowdy and traveling light. We recorded our debut album, Eviction Notice, one year ago.
