"Hard Working Class Heroes 09"

Happily, we then follow the lesser-travelled road to find Hired Hands in Andrews Lane. They’re a 7-piece, polygamous marriage of varied, disparate elements, including sax, violin and clarinet; they create a sound which probably ought not to work – but it does, handsomely, and in a far more accessible fashion than The Jimmy Cake ever have. That’s not to say their inventive brand of folk makes for too-easy listening; it’s just nice to find such a talented band pursuing a sound all of their own. - State Magazine

Bio

Hired Hands are a seven piece band in their early twenties promoting their music on the Dublin gig scene. Many of the Hands come from a classically trained background, having learnt their trade in orchestras and ensembles before turning to folk and rock, guitars and drums in their teenage years. They met while studying psychology and medicine in college and combined under a mutual love of British and American folk. Over time their sound has hardened and compacted so that now it is a unique blend of soaring brass, strings and woodwind over twin electric guitars and a jazz-influenced rhythm section. The band take their cues from a range of influences, absorbing everything from Mississippi John Hurt to Joanna Newsom to Dirty Projectors to John Coltrane. The result is a fresh and original sound quite different from many of the predominant trends on the current music scene, which the Hired Hands practice and record in their local church hall.
