"The Buzz On: HITS"

Here's a little math equation: What do you get when you add a dude from Holy Ghost! to a dude from The Drums to three other hot, talented musician dudes? You get a hit! Or, more accurately, a band called HITS. (Ba dum ching! We're allowed one cheesy joke per post, right?)

Listen to HITS after the jump.

As is the case with many New York bands, HITS' members have been tooling around the scene for the past decade, earning their chops in various other musical outfits before settling down in their current lineup (fun fact: HITS used to be called Jump Into The Gospel). And may we just say that we're thrilled they did? Because it's going to take a LOT to pry us away from HITS' highly danceable '80s synth pop (see: HITS's song "Madness"). Or, in simpler terms, imagine if Passion Pit came out in the '80s, wrote a custom soundtrack to "The Breakfast Club," and were somehow able to harness today's freshest production techniques. Or think of your favorite (not so) guilty pleasure '80s pop bands (the more one-hit-wonder-y, the better): Toto, a-ha, A Flock Of Seagulls, etc. Oh, and did we mention THEY'RE ALL VERY ATTRACTIVE? You can thank us later.

Though they're still preparing their debut release After Dark, HITS have already amassed a devoted fan base, some of whom included a handful of VERY FAMOUS PEOPLE. In fact, we may have to take a second to totally #humblebrag on behalf of the boys, because none other than ROBERT PATTINSON is a HITS fan. So is Cobra Starship mastermind Gabe Saporta. And Josh Madden, who tweets about HITS on the reg! (Jealous is a normal emotion, my friends.) If you, like us, are dying to see HITS live, then make sure to catch the bros on the road with Gemini Club, starting Jan. 29. - MTV

- Data Clipe

"HITS’ Romantic New Wave Crooner ‘Madness’"

It’s an epic battle of the cheekbones in this new video from NYC’s ambitiously but not all that inappropriately named HITS. In this corner we have model Olya Zueva on the wind machine and the sultry #synthgaze, and in the other HITS frontman Louis Epstein on the new wave croon and casually disaffected mic-holding poses. Who will win!? You’ll have to watch and find out. Fortunately, the song itself, a gurgling synth-pop romance is the perfect soundtrack for crushing out.
The band, comprised of former members of such like-minded indie dance outfits as Holy Ghost! and The Drums, is on the brink of releasing their debut, After Dark, and will appear at the Mercury Lounge on January 31 on tour with Gemini Club. More dates and music here. - Bullett Magazine

"It Pop apresenta: conheça a banda HITS e vicie em "Madness"!"

"music video: hits"

New York City’s HITS just released a new music video for their synth-happy track “Madness,” and if it doesn’t make you want to go out to a dance-party-to-end-all-dance parties tonight, we don’t know what will.

Singer Louis Epstein (rocking a polka dot button-down, which the fashion editor side of us loves) makes hitting all the high notes look like no biggie, and we couldn’t not give guitarist Ben Vescovi a shout-out for rocking sunglasses throughout the entire video. And yes, they’re very nearly upstaged by actress Olya Zueva, who plays the madness-inducing muse, but somehow manage to keep it together. Mostly because the song is that good–check it out to see what we mean. –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

"Singled Out: HITS' Madness"

Today HITS frontman Louis Epstein tells us about the song "Madness" from their debut "Hits EP". Here is the story:
We were working on finishing up our EP, literally sorting through 15 or so songs. It was overwhelming and not all the songs matched energy-wise or were necessarily very good. I left the studio in the middle of the day to clear my head and take a break. As I walked up the street to the nearest coffee shop, I saw this girl sitting on a bench. She had these incredibly clear blue eyes, like she was from another planet, or was just incarnated that day, just for that moment. I walked past her, hurriedly got a cup of tea, and rushed back to where I had seen her, determined to witticisize her into boyfriending me. But she was already gone. So instead I was flooded with all these visons of her and I together, playing house, making babies, cooking dinner... And at the same time, I knew I was just too crazy, too upended, and just psychologically incapable of any of that!

I walked back to the studio and wrote the line, "Dont you want, dont you need, a nighttime fantasy with the madness that's in me." I wrote basically the entire song song in the next few hours and just changed the story as if I had fallen in love with a stranger that I had seen from an apartment window, "Look up and let me see heaven, from two stories down you pass by." I remember calling my friend and saying, "I just met my future wife...if I deserve her." Of course, we aren't married now, but maybe she's reading this and this is somehow sounding familiar? (It was September, I was wearing all white, after Labor Day no less, and a black winter hat, 4th ave, sun was out, we connected like bees and pollen, SWM, 6"2, enjoys anything you do, email me at Mad4U@hitsmusicnyc.com).

So like most songs, it's a "boy doesn't meet girl, girl doesn't meet boy, boy writes a song about an imagined meeting, girl hears the song, reads this article, emails boy and …."

Cause it all works out. Even the confusion surrounding the EP got hitched that day. "Madness" ended up being the sonic focal point that the rest of the songs on the EP orbited around. - Anti Music

"New Band: HITS"

Who are these guys?
HITS is a NY band that used to be called Jump Into The Gospel, if you’ve heard that name before. If you haven’t, get on their new one ASAP. The five-piece band — singer Louis Epstein, guitarist Ben Vescovi, keyboardist Erik Tonnesen (who plays live with Holy Ghost), bassist Lakis Pavlou, and drummer Chris Stein (formerly of The Drums) — has toured with Cloud Nothings, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Datarock and Band of Skulls, and are BFFs with Cobra Starship, who produced and mixed their upcoming self-titled EP.

OK, they have cred. But can they play?
Oh yeah. Contrary to the current indie-pop wave, these guys trace their roots to ’80s electro-synth, with a little pop tinge. Dancing is pretty much a given, but their modern take — Cobra Starship’s influence is noted — prevents you from feeling like a Flashdance extra. It’s less sugary, more thoughtfully produced dance pop (if that’s a thing).

Sounds like club music.
Hold up. Skrillex is club music. HITS is unabashedly fun, dance party music. It’s not particularly insightful, but it doesn’t pretend to be. You won’t have that guilty, “I’m listening to pop” feeling because it’s just so damn good. HITS are a hit, for sure (sorry, had to).

Summer-playlist worthy?
It’s already on ours. Download their single Madness on Soundcloud now, and watch for their EP release on June 26 (we heard some of the other songs — play St. John immediately when it drops). After that, expect to hear their stuff making the radio (and stereo, and DJ booth…) rounds soon.

Sweet. Are they playing here soon?
NYC-based means NYC shows. Their next gig is at Cameo Gallery on May 27. We hear their live show is ridic. So, obvi, see you there. - Byrne Notice

"Tom Tom Club played Brooklyn Bowl with HITS (pics, setlist)"

While TV sets were airing David Byrne & St. Vincent on the Colbert Report, Tom Tom Club teamed with HITS for a show last night at Brooklyn Bowl (11/1), a one-off date for the ex-Talking Heads rhythm section and married couple whose new EP, Downtown Rockers, is out now.
Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, who have weathered a lot as NYers over the last 35 years or so, lead the crowd through Tom Tom Club favorites (including megahit "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood") and even did a couple Talking Heads songs ("Psycho Killer" and Al Green's "Take Me to the River" which the Heads did on More Songs About Buildings and Food). More pics from Brooklyn Bowl, where Big Freedia also played since Sandy, are below, including one of the setlist.

"Fresh Music from NYC: HITS"

"HITS EP"

When HITS released “Madness” over a month ago, it whet my appetite for the rest of their EP and to see how they compared to when they were Jump Into The Gospel. JITG's music had always been fairly electronic so this wasn't too large of a jump, but as HITS their music is noticeably much more 80s pop-tinged, a couple specific things jumping out at me that at times lead singer Louis Epstein's voice resembled Robert Smith's from The Cure, and that certain parts of songs were reminiscent of 80s-era Depeche Mode. I'm not the most unbiased person as a fan of 80s pop/rock, but I personally feel that HITS struck the balance of paying homage to a past era without sounding badly dated, and though I have a lot of appreciation for modern music, it's fun to throw something like this into the mix. And why wouldn't you when it's up on their Soundcloud for free for a limited time? Give HITS a chance, I don't think you'll regret it! - music murmur

"HITS Offering Download of "Madness""

With undeniably catchy melodies, anthemic choruses, and playful lyrical wit, singer/guitarist Louis Epstein, guitarist Ben Vescovi, keyboardist Erik Tonnesen (live member of Holy Ghost), bassist Lakis Pavlou, and drummer Chris Stein (former member of The Drums) have positioned themselves to be not only a staple in the NYC club scene but also a top band to watch this year.

They will release their self-titled EP on June 26.

The songs form a throwback '80s electro-synth sound with a contemporary feel only the year 2012 could allow. The new EP, produced and mixed with a little help from their friends, Cobra Starship, swings from high energy dance songs like "Veins" and "St. John" to the thoughtful musings on isolation in "Twin Peaks" and the skewed vision of love in "Madness."

"Listen to This: HITS Debut EP"

While there’s no shortage of up-and-coming bands to be on the lookout for right now, New York-based electro-rock outfit HITS should definitely be toward the top of your list. Since their formation in 2010 the band has shared the stage with everyone from Band of Skulls and Bleeding Knees Club to Cloud Nothings and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Last night, following a packed show at Mercury Lounge in NYC, HITS also released their self-titled debut EP. "Live: HITS at Mercury Lounge"

“I can’t stop the bleeding.”

The HITS guitarist Ben Vescovi turned to frontman Louis Epstein between songs to let him know that he was having trouble controlling the blood that was flowing out of his finger and spreading all over the pickguard on his Strat.

The interaction was brief – Epstein commented that Vescovi had also spread some blood onto his cheek, Vescovi made a half-hearted attempt to wipe it off without getting more on his face, then they continued on with their set.

The fact that Vescovi played through the whole show barely skipping a beat with his right hand dripping blood, clearly signified that this band is serious. Aside from the injury, the band played an excellent set, full of catchy choruses and highly danceable grooves. Their music is playful yet complex, and they have a great stage presence.

"HITS Releases Debut EP"

New York based HITS (formerly Jump Into The Gospel) released their debut self-titled EP last week.

HITS is a tight piece of work. The songs are overall more polished while the band maintains the natural charm and fun of their previous incarnation. The album is reminiscent of mid-80's dance pop and tend to get stuck in your head forcing you to put them on repeat.

The wickedly wonderful "St. John" has been a longtime favorite from their live shows. The recorded version is less funky and more pop but maintains its infectious dance quality and bad ass bass groove of their live performances. The catchy "Singularity" stands as the commercial appeal track and has great potential in the licensing world.

On "Twin Peaks" first of all, is that even vocalist Louis Epstein singing?! The vocals on the album sound strong and more confident in general. But, on this low key, dreamy sounding track, the confidence particularly shines through in the deeper, richer tone. Somewhere out there, teens in angst are declaring this their song.

After several listens, I have decided that "Madness" is possibly one of the sexiest songs of the summer in a geek girl love fest sort of way. It makes me feel like I should be at this very moment lusting over some slightly odd, vaguely nerdy guy with a somewhat weird view on love.

If I have any complaints about the EP, it would be as a fan of guitars, they're a little too tucked away in the mix for my personal tastes ... more of guitarist Ben Vescovi please and thank you. And, a live favorite, "Start A Following" didn't crossover into their new world.

Get on board with this album and band. They are ready to take their star turn and you don't want to be the only person to miss the boat. - Quirky NY Chick

"NYC synth-pop group Hits releases self-titled EP"

As promised, New York City indie pop group Hits has released their self-titled EP this past week. Formerly known as Jump into the Gospel, Hits is comprised of singer/guitarist Louis Epstein, guitarist Ben Vescovi, keyboardist Erik Tonnesen (live member of Holy Ghost), bassist Lakis Pavlou, and drummer Chris Stein (former member of the Drums). Coming on the scene in 2010, they quickly made a name for themselves as a staple in the New York City club scene as a synth-rock 80's pop group but with their latest EP release they're set to take their music to the rest of the world. Check out their single "Madness" from their most recent EP. - Critical Mob

" Jump Into The Gospel becomes Hits"

The band will debut the new name with a show at The Mercury Lounge tonight May 15. Check out the new electronic single "Madness" streaming below. - Deli Magazine

"Jump Into The Gospel: February 18, 2012 Pianos"

Jump Into The Gospel are poised to step up to the next level. When we saw them back in June their melodic pop showed significant potential, but the Jump Into The Gospel breakout gig took place a couple of weeks back when they impressed those who came to see them open for Cloud Nothings at The Studio at Webster Hall. Last week at Pianos, I saw them again and the development of the band was striking. Lead singer Louis Epstein has mastered his stage manner and the band, which includes members of Holy Ghost and The Drums, is tighter and more focused. The thirty minute set included several numbers from the upcoming Gospel EP, due in March. At times, the music resembles the frenetic pop of Of Montreal and at others there is a definite neo-80's sound more fitting a Captured Tracks band. The question is which type of pop band that Jump Into The Gospel is destined to be. Either way, it won’t be long before Jump Into The Gospel has moved on from smaller venues into a larger spotlight.
I recorded this set with a board feed mixed with the Neumann microphones centered in front of the soundboard booth, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy! - NYC TAPER

"2012 MUST KNOW"

New York five-piece JUMP INTO THE GOSPEL comprise of frontman LOUIS EPSTEIN, guitarist BEN VESCOVI, bassist LAKIS PAVLOU, keyboardist ERIK TONNESEN and drummer CHRIS STEIN. Between the members, they boast experience as touring members of The Drums, Holy Ghost!, and for The Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano.

P.S. If you own Cobra Starship's 'Night Shades' album, then chances are that you will recognise the voice of Epstein from the record's closing-track, 'Shwick'.

COUP DE MAIN: What does your band name mean to you personally?
JUMP INTO THE GOSPEL - CHRIS STEIN: It came from the Harry Nilsson song 'Jump Into The Fire' - which matched our energy at the time. Also, that was the only name thrown in the hat that wasn't a 'Zoolander' reference.

CDM: For those that haven't heard your music before, how would you describe it?
CHRIS: It's like "listening to a band you really like" - but it's us instead of that band.

CDM: What do you hope for people to take away from listening to your music?
CHRIS: Karate skills.

CDM: What's your songwriting process like?
CHRIS: It's a give and take between the studio and the rehearsal space. We typically add a bunch at one place and rip it apart at the other until it seems right.

CDM: Who or what, are your biggest songwriting influences?
CHRIS: Talking Heads. Prince. The Cars. David Bowie. New Order.

CDM: What is your favourite Jump Into The Gospel song to play live?
CHRIS: Whichever one people have the biggest response to. That sounds kind of whorish, but what feels best at a live show is a connection between the band and the audience... (And '2012' is the most fun).

CDM: We interviewed Ryland from Cobra Starship last year about 'Shwick' - click HERE to read the interview - the song that Jump Into The Gospel feature on from their latest album. How did the Cobra + JITG friendship come about?
CHRIS: We've all been friends for a while now actually. As far as that song, Louis (our singer) and Gabe [Saporta] (Cobra's singer) were drinking in the studio and some work was accidentally getting done, so a little more effort was put in to complete it. Not an exciting backstory but we love those guys and always have fun with them.

CDM: Lyrically, what's your favourite song that you've written so far and why?
JUMP INTO THE GOSPEL - LOUIS EPSTEIN: I don't really have favourites. I'm most happy with lyrics that match the tonal quality of the song, which is not always necessary, and is one of the more difficult things to accomplish.

CDM: If a movie was made featuring your band, what would happen in it, and who would play each member?
CHRIS: Oh easy: Star-crossed lovers. Chinese mob. Kidnapping. A walk-off. Good guys win, but with attractive scars. Played by all of the Baldwins, an Affleck, and a Wahlberg.

CDM: Tell me something no-one else knows about each member of the band, including yourself...
CHRIS: Erik [Tonnesen] is officially ranked 1480th as a worldwide pinball player. Chris [Stein] has synesthesia (look it up). A psychedelic trip made Louis quit a ten-year smoking habit cold turkey. Ben [Vescovi] does volunteer work. Lakis [Pavlou] can play bass righty or lefty, fluently.

CDM: What's next for Jump Into The Gospel?
CHRIS: We are almost finished recording an EP that will be available this Autumn for New Zealand, and this Spring for North America. It will likely be five songs unless we do something really wrong or really right in the next two weeks. For two songs we have begun storyboarding for the videos, and that will be a fun process for us as we will be doing those ourselves as well, with the aid of a couple of our film friends. There is some collaborative work with a couple NYC band-friends that have to remain unmentioned for now, and then a north-eastern American tour makes sense after the recordings are finished and we tighten up the new songs on NYC stages.

CDM: Lastly, can we hope that you'll visit us in New Zealand one day? What do you know about New Zealand?
CHRIS: Yes, please. You guys have two national anthems. That's not fair. You guys would play yours, and then we'd play ours, and then you'd play another and then we'd have nothing else to play.

Watch JUMP INTO THE GOSPEL's music video for 'Humvee Mansion' below...

"Cloud Nothings, Bleeding Rainbow, Jump Into The Gospel @ Studio at Webster Hall, NYC 1/26/12"

Last night, Cloud Nothings played a packed Studio at Webster Hall, a small room that accentuated their strengths, making the band’s bratty squall seem even huger, its frenzy crammed into a small opening. They didn’t waver much from Album Of The Week Attack On Memory, only departing briefly for the last song which I didn’t recognize (Help?). “Wasted Days,” which I assumed would be the closer because it’s such a pummeling, emotional force, showed up midset and was an easy choice for a highlight. There was no encore, but they didn’t need one; the impression of a reformed, barb-ier new-look Cloud Nothings had been made. Philly garage rockers Bleeding Rainbow (formerly Reading Rainbow, here’s their explanation for the name change) and electro rockers Jump Into The Gospel opened. Check out Jessica Amaya‘s photos up top. - Stereogum

"Jump into the Gospel Live Serious Business"

Jump Into The Gospel, a five-piece from New York City, create synth-heavy pop gems complete with big, bright catchy choruses and electrifying dance-worthy melodies. Their anthems ooze cool, rockstar swagger and radio friendly glossiness. The group is led by exuberant frontman Louis Epstein and features bassist Lakis Pavlou, guitarist Ben Vescovi, Chris Stein, (live member of The Drums), and keyboardist Erik Tonnesen (live member of Holy Ghost!). They’ve collaborated with Cobra Starship and their addictive tunes have even made a fan of Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, who was spotted at one of their shows. /// Their self-titled EP is the latest release by Jump Into The Gospel. /// Official website: http://jumpintothegospel.tumblr.com - Break Thru Radio

"What You May Have Missed: Jump Into The Gospel at Pianos"

Jump Into The Gospel: October 12 @ Pianos, New York, NY

When last I'd seen Jump Into The Gospel, they were finishing up a residency at Pianos about four months ago. Earlier this month, I was at the same LES venue to see the fellas once again. What do you get when you toss a bunch of adorable skinny guys on a stage with instruments and amplification? You get one happy me! The rest of the audience was equally happy.

In a compact set, they did what they do best, worked the crowd into a dance party that had folks wanting more. They've tightened up performance wise which gave them a bit of a harder sound, more edgy. They also look different. Body languages have changed. They look more rock star now. No, it's not the white outfits, those just make me crave ice cream. The rhythmic instrument guys, Chris Stein (drums), Erik Tonnesen (keys) and Lakis Pavlou (bass) had a laid back coolness about them and a subtle power that demanded you dance. Guitarist Ben Vescovi has stepped things up a notch. He sounded more streamlined, more precise. And visually, he has achieved that pretty, slightly vacant, 70's rock star look. Hm, he may take issue with that description! Front-man Louis Epstein is evolution. He is working the stage more and frankly, there were several moments that I got that larger than life feeling while watching him perform. At this rate, there will soon be too much Louis for the smaller stages; he'll need a grander setting. At one point, I was perched precariously on the steps beneath Epstein. I looked up, the lights were framing him and thought to myself, rising star. In all of the time I've been going to see their shows, Jump Into The Gospel have never sounded or looked so complete. - Quirky NY Chick

"Weekly Feature: JITG Opens for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr."

New York’s Jump Into the Gospel’s main aural attraction is Louis Epstein’s staccato new wave/Brit-pop vocal cadence which hops along with heavy guitar and bright, synth-driven riffs. The band raises the bar of synth-rock with energetic and contagious rhythms, sleek synthesizers, and straight up good songs with a quirky electronic twist. The band has an upcoming string of interesting shows in the NYC area, including Cameo Gallery on 09.16 and Bowery Ballroom opening for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. on September 24. - Read Meijin Bruttomesso's interview with the band here. - Deli Magazine

Jump into the Gospel
electro-pop bliss
by Meijin Bruttomesso

New York’s Jump Into the Gospel is a “hallelujah” moment for local music, raising the bar of the scene with energetic and contagious rhythms, sleek synthesizers, and straight up good pop songs with a quirky twist. JITG’s new self-titled EP’s main aural attraction is Louis Epstein’s staccato new wave/Brit-pop vocal cadence which hops along with heavy guitar and bright, synth-driven riffs. The EP opens with smashing snares and ethereal keys of “Humvee Mansion,” followed by bouncy vocals that play off the syncopated instrumental backdrop of “Photovoltaic,” and buzzing and bubbly “Powerlines.” A heavy, house remix, “Humvee ‘Scary’ Mansion,” by GRVRRBRS, is a track suitable for the finest dance parties and completes the EP on a catching high. Also available is the new single, “2012,” which showcases a sultrier side of the band. Jump Into the Gospel’s new material preaches an undeniably addictive quality that offers salvation to those seeking a reincarnation of electro-rock.

Where did Jump Into the Gospel get its name? Was there ever anything “Gospel” about the band?
Sounds like someone still &quotGoogles." You should &quotBing," you'd find out in two flips of a goldfish's tail.

Who are your favorite fellow NY artists, and who do you see yourselves collaborating with in the future?
Conan O'Brien is super high on our top five list, or Robert E. Lee-Smith and The Saturday Night Live Band. But best-worse scenario, we're thinking the creative director that orchestrated Aerosmiths 90's comeback.

How did you all come together?
Four words: Keith's. Hard. Arnold. Palmers. It’s also what keeps us together...(Kinda hard to keep that smile upside down when we're cheersin' up a couple of Keith's Arnolds...)

What inspired you most on your new self-titled EP? Do you have a favorite track?
Well, let me answer your question with another question: what's your favorite M. Knight Shyamalan twist? Yeah, exactly, we can't really answer that either...

What has been the most rewarding event in the past year?
Well the way Lakis talks about this meal he had at this diner in Tuscan, you'd think it would be that, but we know he was drunk, so we're gonna go with that time in rehearsal we covered Sum 41's “Still Waiting.”

If your music was the soundtrack for a film, what kind of film would it be?
Most probably It would be for an adaptation of David Foster Wallace's “Infinite Jest,” but Louis' older brother is being a real hard on us and won't help us read that book first, sooooo....well, actually Chris has always been told that he's got a real Sandra Bullock style back there on the drums, so maybe one of her films would be a good match too.

"New Artist: Jump into the Gospe- Bold tunes to scoop you off your feet and shake you around"

Who be this then?
Five dudes: Louis Epstein (vocals, guitar), Ben Vescovi (guitar, vocals), Lakis Pavlou (bass), Chris Stein (drums) and Erik Tonnesen (keyboards) from New York whose bold tunes scoop you off your feet, lift you in the air and shake you all around like some kind of jungle-net booby trap. They come with on-the-road experience too — members have toured with Holy Ghost and The Drums over the past few years.

Why should I care?
Because their shows are getting busier and busier and we heard R-Patz is even a fan. Plus they have a sackful of tunes that put most bands to shame, and possess that innate pop sensibility that hypnotizes the listener into singing along and bending limbs into appropriate dance-shaped shapes on first exposure.

Where can I hear some music?
Take a trip back into time and check their MySpace, or keep in the here and now and stream five tracks through Soundcloud on their website. They’ll treat you to the synth strut anthem-in-the-making 2012, the high-voltage Powerlines, the falsetto, stop-starty charms of Photovoltaic and recent single Humvee Mansion among others.

How else can I dive headfirst into the world of Jump Into The Gospel?
Hit up their Tumblr for all manner of irreverence, from pics to MP3s to a section where they interpet your dreams. Yeah, really. They have shows scheduled next month in Hoboken, NJ and at Pop Montreal so follow them on Twitter for gig updates.

"Jump into the Gospel"

I first heard about Jump Into the Gospel from our good friend Abbey, who hosts a mean afternoon radio show at Virgin Mobile Live. WVUM had the chance to co-host on one of Abbey’s shows last October and as luck would have it, my summer internship was on the floor above the VML studios. Naturally, I’d always pop my head in and see what Abbey was up to. I’d often see guys in tight pants and Converse roaming around on her floor, which contrasted with the usual suits and ties so it was obvious when there was a band in. She recommended I listen to this 5-piece Manhattan- based group. And I did. And I liked.

Aside from being on VML, Jump Into the Gospel has played many a show in NYC and held a residency at Piano’s over the summer. And Piano’s was just the spot where I met the guys last week for beer and afternoon frozen margaritas as it poured outside, a nice way to spend my last day in NYC. It’s clear that the guys have talent and they are passionate about their sound and live performances. Although I didn’t get to see them perform, I’m sure they bring it. And if anyone has the chance to see them in NYC, do it up!

Interestingly, many of the band members have dabbled in other well-known acts– with Erik touring with Holy Ghost! & Chris playing live drums for….the Drums!

‘Humvee Mansion’ is the first single off of their self-titled EP that was released in March and is the definition of catchy. I love the way their new single ’2012' starts out–it reminds me of a song by the Cars and leather jackets. Synthy and fun. These will definitely be the songs I ring out my summer 2011 to. - Night Drive Miami

"Listen to Jump Into the Gospel Perform Live on Guilty Pleasure"

Playing packed clubs and churning out lo-fi anthems that are equipped with viscous synth leads, turbulent vocals, and indelible hooks, Jump into the Gospel has been preaching the certainty that fragmented pop, rock, dance, and electro mix better than a DJ switching from wine to whiskey. Tonight on Guilty Pleasure, you can learn more abotu this talented troupe, when they get their interviewee session on, and then play a few songs acoustically... all live at 8pm ET.

Jump into the Gospel is fronted by Louis Epstein, a native New Yorker, whose emphatic vocals and interspersed wailing falsettos, are reminiscent of Robert Smith, David Byrne, and Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays). Helping spread the Word are guitar player and back-up vocalist Ben Vescovi, bass player Lakis Pavlou, keyboard player Erik Tonnesen (Holy Ghost!), and drummer Chris Stein (The Drums). Gospel is currently punching shows’ lights out in support of the band's first EP recorded at Brooklyn Recording with Ben Liscio (who has collaborated with producers and artists Rich Costey, Dave Sitek, The Strokes, and TV on the Radio), and will be releasing new video-accompanied singles this summer.

"Jump Into the Gospel on Virgin Mobile Live"

Well this has been a year in the making. Lewis, Chris, Erik and Lakis of Jump Into the Gospel (my favorite band out of NYC right now) finally made it to midtown to drop some world premieres as well as an electro-acoustic live version of their song “Original Fever“. Seriously their songs are so tight I almost caught Mike swooning at one point. You’ve been warned. BOOM (Shout out to Ben and Skye – the mics will always be on for you). - Virgin Mobile Live

"Q & A Jump into the Gospel"

New York based band Jump Into The Gospel have been shaking things up left, right and center. Their songs are irresistibly catchy, synth based, pop-rock ear candy. And, their shows are high energy fun. The first time I heard Jump Into The Gospel, I thought to myself, 'hm, this reminds me of when I first heard "Girls On Film" and fell in love with some little band called Duran Duran.' JITG however, are edgier and aren't slathered in make-up.

So, on the eve of their residency at Pianos (Wednesday nights in June at 10PM), I thought I'd share a little Q&A with you. I sent over some questions and got back some quirky answers thus adding to the reasons why I'm a little bit in love with them. They fit in well here in my little corner of the Internet.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): Lame origin question everyone probably asks ... why the name Jump Into The Gospel? How did it come about?

Jump Into The Gospel (JITG): Simple. A software program called Sought Flare Slow Jam. It takes your old name and plays with the words until it comes up with something marketable without losing the rhythm of your old name. We used to be called Hump The Princess Toadstool.

(QNYC): I've seen and love the "Humvee Mansion" video; it reminds me of old school Merrie Melodies shorts and others from that era. How did that concept come about?

(JITG): Oh that was actually our Uncle's idea. Well, he's not really our "Uncle", but you know how if someone tricks you into following them somewhere when you're a kid, say with Sesame Street tickets, and when you get there you realize there's no Sesame Street, and there's no Cadbury Eggs, and instead you just have to live with your new "relative" since you don't know where you are and his drugs keep you complacent? Well it's sort of a tribute to "that whole thing."

(QNYC): You've introduced dream interpretations to your tumblr page, a first I would imagine. Who came up with that and what's the fascination with people’s dreams?

(JITG): This is kind of embarrassing, but it was Louis' idea (singer). He's got this complex about his dad being the strongest and best dad. Basically if you have a dream where your dad is doing anything heroic, courageous, admirable, etc, he will read your account of it and go to sleep as quickly as possible so his dad can trump your dad before you go spreading it around that your dad is anything to brag about. He thinks his dream will affect yours and your dad will "lose" next time... It's really childish and we understand if this makes you less inclined to write in dreams as it legitimizes the "game", but maybe that's what he needs, we think. (Really unhealthy and competitive, sorry again.)

(QNYC): Tell us three things you think the world should know about you guys.

(JITG): 1) We have a negative net worth and a positive gross outlook.

2) Each of us intend on writing our respective high school science teachers and asking for a $5,000 loan to see if we can't put renting physical movies from a video store back on the table (if none of this band stuff pans out).

3) Hernias won't work on us, so if you need help moving - aaaand iiif weee're nooot tooo buuusyyy, we can totally help. Oh and we won't do pool tables. Also if you have a piano, that's a totally different kind of mover, so don't even ask.

(QNYC): If you were a dessert, what kind would you be, besides hopefully delicious?

(JITG): This could be because we imagine ourselves as Velociraptors, but probably a delicious Stegosaurus (we think it's pretty obvi that those guys are hiding some pretty delicate meat under all that armor. Like turtles. Which we would never eat! Poor things.)... OOOOH! Or nachos cause we've been doing the "dessert first" thing lately since we don't live with our parents anymore, and that or pizza is prolly the best ending to a pecan pie.

(QNYC): Let's turn the tables, if you were asking the questions, what's the one thing you would ask?

(JITG): How long is a piece of string?

(QNYC): Long enough to allow the guy I normally have tied up in the basement to move around the house comfortably tethered to cook, clean and um, stuff...

My thanks to Jump Into The Gospel. If you're in New York, head on over to Pianos and check them out.

"Photo Review: A Night With A Band Of Rock 'n' Roll Messiahs"

This past Wednesday night, New York's own Jump Into The Gospel kicked off the first of their residency shows at LES venue Pianos. If you didn't catch them, fret not. You still have three weeks left! They'll be taking the stage at 10PM on June 15, 22 ($8) and 29 (free).

What happens when you toss five long guys on a stage, with instruments and lighting that altered between "what lighting? and a slightly trippy, seizure inducing bonanza." You get a show full of shake your ass music and a bunch of folks dancing in front of them!

The band dropped their new single "2012" recently and it seems to have garnered a lot love and attention. When they launched into it, the audience reaction, while always favorable, this time out was akin to that of fan favorites "Humvee Mansion" and "Flagship." If you like the recorded version, the live version is that and more ... it goes all extra synth(y) and guitar(y) at the end; it's the equivalent of sex on the dance floor. I vote another hot JITG song, "St. John," be released next because it needs to be on my music player of choice. But hey, that's just me.

Go see them. You'll have fun! And, if you didn't see it already, check out the Q&A they did for us earlier this week. They're funny... and possibly insane which is how we here at QNYC like our musicians! - Quirky NY Chick

"Say Hello To… Jump into the Gospel"

New to the downtown New York music scene but already making waves is Jump into the Gospel, fronted by Louis Epstein along with guitar player and back-up vocalist Ben Vescovi, bass player Lakis Pavlou, keyboard player Erik Tonnesen (toured with Holy Ghost), and drummer Chris Stein (toured with The Drums). Their irresistible tunes have brought them a small army of rabid fans, including Twilight star Robert Pattinson. In April they performed to a bursting crowd at the Mercury Lounge on the Lower East Side and next month, return to the neighborhood for a residency at Pianos June 8, 15, 22 and 29th (information after the jump).

Their first ep is out now and was recorded with Ben Liscio (who has collaborated with producers and artists Rich Costey, Dave Sitek, The Strokes, and TV on the Radio) but we have a brand new, yet unheard song, ’2012,’ for download after the jump. - The Music Slut

"Music Review: Jump into the Gospel"

Whereas most voices these days have taken the recent financial crisis as a reason to either complain aimlessly or blame others ad nauseam, hipster quartet Jump into the Gospel pursue a more distilled emotion in frontman Louis Epstein's carefully thought-out epigrams. He trills chirpily on opening track "Humvee Mansion" about the tribulations of modernity, lambasting Bush-era splurging with Vampire Weekend-like wit: "I don't win until I make you lose." One might think that a band whose crowning single obsesses over 401ks might be too dry for dancing, but somehow JITG manages to voice an irrepressible optimism despite the lyrics' nihilistic take on a potentially dull subject. The song bristles with the danceable accessibility of its indie pop contemporaries Phoenix and Passion Pit. After critiquing our nation's endemic lust for capitalism, Gospel's debut EP delves into the misfortunes of romance, often channeling the offbeat sentiment and percussive elocution of Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner. But after the pungent, sparkling opener, the earnest, hot-and-heavy emotional perforation of songs like "Photovoltaic" feel comparatively charmless despite their obvious craft. Perhaps Jump Into The Gospel is at their best when they're at their most glib.

"Jump Into The Gospel: Hot, Sweaty, Butt Shakin' Fun"

Monday night I went down to Mercury Lounge to catch the charismatic Jump Into The Gospel do their thing. Each time I see them, the crowd gets a little bigger and a little louder. I wasn't much into the two bands before them and to be honest, I was a little concerned about the overall energy of the room. Maybe that was just me though; I had some lovely Tennessee refreshments so I may have been paying more attention to that more than to those two bands. That being said, any concern however, went away when JITG hit the stage. There was an amazing energy during their set and everyone, audience and band, seemed hellbent on getting their party on. See what a good time I had? I had so much fun I said 'getting their party on.' Curse you skinny, music playing boys for making me use horrid terms like that! Several times during the evening, I glanced over my shoulder and saw massive amounts of dancing.

You should really catch these guys while they're playing intimate venues. With their insanely catchy songs and 'let's have a party up in here' vibe, you'll soon have to stand in line with the masses to get into their shows. I wouldn't want anyone to miss the ass shakin' good time they offer.

Oh, btw, in case you didn't know or it for some bizarre reason slipped your mind, Jump Into The Gospel have EP out. The self-titled release can be found HERE if you're into the digital thing. It's a name your own price deal so technically, you could get it for free. But, if you want to be super cool, you could show them some monetary love. And, if that wasn't enough, and you have a fondness for vinyl, you can click HERE and buy it in that format. Whichever format you choose, you'll fall in lust ... the heavy petting kind of lust, not the slutty bathroom stall kind, that's reserved for their live performances.

"Jump Into The Gospel Announce Self-Titled EP"

Two words: ABOUT TIME. Louis, Chris, Ben and Erik of Jump Into the Gospel have been at the top of my list for over a year now. What list? The hallowed list of bands-that-make-me-want-to-sell-my-belongings-and-start-a-record-label. They’ve got enough power pop and swagger to work the MTV crowd, but still possess the magic it-factor to make any hardened hipster dance. Fans finally will be able to have the recorded versions of songs that they know from live gigs – “Humvee Mansion” and “Photovoltaic” being two of my faves. Perhaps the best surprise is the bonus GRVRRBRS remix. Aiding them in the studio process was producer Ben Liscio who has collaborated with The Strokes, TV on the Radio and Glasvegas. Grab the digital version of the EP here and secure the bragging rights for later. Tour dates below. - Virgin Mobile Live

Live Review: Jump Into The Gospel
By Gray Hurlburt Thursday, June 09, 2011

Pop at Pianos.

Last night, five synth-pop bands squished into the tiny back room of Pianos Bar. Musicians accounted for half of the audience at Jump Into The Gospel’s residency showcase, which premieres the band’s debut EP over the month of June. Because the acts were relative newcomers, or maybe for a different reason altogether, only a few in the crowd danced and even fewer sang along. But opening nights are always a bit dicey. So, who’s The Gospel?

The Gospel comprises touring members of The Drums and Holy Ghost!, bringing the total to five. They take cues from The Bravery and The Cars, a perfect recipe for radio airtime and comercial viability down the road. And that’s safe to say, because their music hammers with catchiness and amplifies through snappy choruses and cheerful melodies. It’s good pop.

Fronting the group, Louis Epstein handled the stage like a hipster David Bowie. His fist pumps, chest bumps, and reaches up to higher ground went a bit over the top, but he sings with an excellent Ric Ocasek hiccup. Otherwise, the group remained tight and refrained from any artistic flourishes.

I would not expect Jump Into The Gospel to grace many summer stages this summer in Brooklyn, because they missed the train for new new wave acts by a year or more. The town’s saturated enough as it is, with more synths per capita than Brandon Flowers’ basement. Then again, The Gospel won’t need Brooklyn to gain listeners. - Death and Taxes

[Win This!] + New Video + Tour Dates : Jump Into The Gospel : Humvee Mansion

The working parts of Jump Into The Gospel include touring members of The Drums and Holy Ghost!, and while 2012, the latest track from their forthcoming record premiered yesterday, MOKB is going to throw you a little curve. First off, it’s worth mentioning that the band with be hunkering down in the month of June for a residency at Pianos, so if you are in the New York area, on a Wednesday night in June, there are certainly worse things you could get yourself into.

Secondly, we’re going to share the video for Humvee Mansion, which though it involves a most familiar storyline, creeps me out to no end. I am neither high nor tripping as I type this, but if you are at this moment, I highly advise just coming back to this one sometime when you’re feeling a bit more grounded. - My Old Kentucky Blog

"Jump Into The Gospel, Brick And Mortar + more @ Pianos"

There’s something wonderful about taking a chance on an off-night and just going to a show—albeit one that you were invited to—with next to no expectations, and walking away having seen five impressive artists and completely satisfied with a Wednesday evening well spent.

Such was my experience attending the third week of Jump Into The Gospel’s residency at Pianos.

The evening started out with Tampa-based indie pop / rock sextet Sleepy Vikings. I was impressed as soon as they got on stage—coyly introducing themselves and kicking into their first song. They played distinctly ‘90s, emo-influenced indie rock, with strong male / female vocals and well-structured yet simple songs. What really made them stand out for me was the infectious energy that marked their stage presence. The excitement and enthusiasm for performing shined off them in a way that you don’t often see in a place like New York, where all too often bands are dedicated to playing up the “cool factor.” These six friends and bandmates, who’d not been home for over a week and had another week to go, seemed to be having the time of their lives.

They were followed by equally engaging but sonically divergent five-piece The Stationary Set. I’ve seen their name on shows for a while now, but had yet to really pay much attention to them. I regretted that as soon as they kicked into their first song. Unlike the few recordings I’d heard, live they absolutely had some musical chops. They got a good portion of the crowd dancing, and had some really complex but accessible instrumentation going on. Their vocalist was quite possibly one of the best I’ve heard in a good while.

The third act of the evening was The Rassle, featuring members of one-time NYC buzz act The Virgins. Much like their former project, the The Rassle have been getting quite a bit of love around the area, and had quite a crowd. There was plenty of dancing going on, which was no surprise. Their sound is a very trendy and accessible blend of electronic and indie rock, with just enough kick to set it apart.

The penultimate performer, and the nights headlining act were Jump Into The Gospel, who much like the three acts before them had a fairly high-energy stage presence. They moved between more swaggering, funk-infused indie rock and synth-heavy indie pop, with some stops in between. The crowd was engaged and dancing for nearly their entire set, but a good ¾ left almost as soon as they finished.

The last band of the night New Jersey’s Brick And Mortar. Even though I’ve seen them multiple times now, I can never figure out how to classify them. They toy with sounds as divergent as indie rock, Afro-beat, world music, punk rock and indie pop. They are only two members, but rock as hard and intensely as a full-on band. While the room was nowhere near as full as it had been, the remaining crowd all moved up to the stage and danced as intensely as a room full of people had prior. Major credit to the band for inspiring that sort of energy out of a small crowd at 11 pm on a Wednesday evening. That is the sort of skill that sets apart good bands from great ones.

I walked away satisfied with my choice to check out a nearly completely random show and am looking forward to checking all of these bands out again. - Beyond Race

"Win A Jump Into The Gospel 7-inch / See Them At Pianos This Week"

If Jump Into the Gospel sound familiar, here’s why: The band boasts members of The Drums and Holy Ghost and lead singer Louis Epstein has played w/ Paul Banks (Interpol), Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship), and Dan Keyes (Young Love). In short, this band has got the the Amazon “You May Also Like…” recommendation feature for dancy electro-rock on lock down.

The band’s debut self-titled EP was recorded at Brooklyn Recording with Ben Liscio (who has collaborated with producers and artists Rich Costey, Dave Sitek, The Strokes, and TV on the Radio). You can win this EP on wax right here. Just leave a comment below about why you deserve the swag and we’ll pick one lucky winner.

I admit, there’s a lot of name-dropping going on here, but it’s all justified by catchy lo-fi anthems with solid synth leads and indelible hooks. Jump Into The Gospel’s NYC residency at Piano’s over the next two weeks is not to be missed, either: - The Vinyl District

"This Week in New York: Jump into the Gopsel"

No, Jump into the Gospel is not a religious fundamental group trying to recruit new conservative zealots. Instead, it’s a crew of five dudes who play exhilarating synth power pop rooted in ’80s grandiosity. And rather than striving for the ultimate redemption, they only want what most of us do: a little wealth and success. “I like my investments / I want my humvee mansion / I steal all the children / goddamn, I need a pension,” Louis Epstein declares on the funky “Humvee Mansion,” from their self-titled debut EP that came out this past February (and is available for free download here). On “Photovoltaic,” guitarists Epstein and Ben Vescovi, bassist Lakis Pavlou, drummer Chris Stein, and keyboardist Erik Tonnesen play a ridiculously catchy hook that you’ll swear you’ve heard before, but don’t think too hard about it and just let it take you away. On their recently released pre-apocalyptic single, “2012,” Epstein sings, “The end’s not your friend”; no, for this up-and-coming New York City band, the beginning is looking a lot friendlier. JITG will be continuing a 10:00 Wednesday-night residency at Piano’s, where they’ll be playing June 15 with Imaginary Cities, the Stationary Set, Living Days, and the Twees, June 22 with Sleepy Vikings, the Stationary Set, the Rassle, and Prospector, and June 29 with Evan Donahue, Sleepy Vikings, the Stationary Set, Fort Lean, and the Hussle Club. - This Week in New York

"Band Crush: Jump into the Gospel"

After some real life research this weekend, we've come to a totally (un)official conclusion: it's almost impossible to listen to indie band Jump Into the Gospel and not sing along.

After all, these four NYC boys have perfected their danceable melodies, electrifying guitar riffs, and charming lyrics and rolled them into one irresistible package. Their first single, "Humvee Mansion" is a highly addictive synth-rock gem that reminds us of MONA or The Rassle, but with a decidedly more polished finish.

Sure, these upbeat tracks are guaranteed to get stuck in your head. But even though the songs might have a sugary, guilty-pleasure vibe, with music this good, you definitely don't have anything to feel guilty about.

Now, they're giving away their EP on Band Camp. You know what that means...it's only a matter of time before you are bobbing your head and singing along, too.
-- LIZA DARWIN - Nylon Magazine

"NYC Artist on the Rise: Jump into the Gospel"

With wide range vocals reminiscent of some Brit bands of the 90s (Primal Scream and happy Monday maybe?), and a growing set of eclectic songs incorporating pop, soul, dance, electro and rock elements, Jump into the Gospel are an up and coming NYC band with a sound that doesn't go unnoticed. The resulting compound is a lot of fun, in particular when the guys get the chorus just right, like in "Photovoltaic". We recommend you check Jump Into The Gospel live at Mercury Lounge on April 25. - Deli Magazine

"Artst Profile: Jump into the Gospel"

The following post was written by DJ Elhaam, our newest contributor who currently hosts the show Guilty Pleasure on East Village Radio. Tune in to her weekly show Monday nights at 8 pm.

Head over to Jump Into the Gospel’s Myspace page, and you’ll find a music video featuring the classic Pied Piper cartoon miming along to the band’s first single “Humvee Mansion”; a shimmering indie pop gem that is at once both an anthem of our current music culture and also timeless in that way it’s forever relatable to your 20s.

I can think of no better reference for Jump Into the Gospel’s live shows than that of the Pied Piper. Frontman Louis Epstein, tall and lanky, with floppy hair and hard to miss good looks, is indeed the pied piper, leading all of downtown’s finest to their gigs.

Relatively new to the Lower East Side music scene, Jump Into the Gospel has quickly garnered attention not only for their highly infectious tunes and energetic live shows, but also for their cult of followers who join them at each gig. At a Jump Into the Gospel performance, you’ll likely find members of beloved indie rock bands (like Young Love, Cobra Starship, The Drums, Marfa Lights, Holy Ghost), famed and trendy restaurateurs (from The Meatball Shop, Smith & Mills, Employees Only), and people from both the art and fashion worlds too.

Even Twilight dreamboat Robert Pattinson is a fan who was spotted at an early show, bringing the band their first Page Six mention as well as some curious Twilight fans who hoped for another vampire sighting. The foursome, consisting of frontman Louis Epstein, drummer Chris Stein, guitarist Ben Vescovi, and keyboardist Erik Tonnesen, possesses the industry’s current standard of great looks (guitarist Ben Vescovi moonlights as a model) and also the fans’ standard of a heart and head for making catchy music sound interesting.

Jump Into the Gospel is busy making the rounds, stomping through the Lower East Side with packed shows and selling their first self released EP. Be sure to check them out before music supervisor extraordinaire Alexandra Pastavas discovers them and features one of their songs as a backdrop to a Gossip Girl take down scene between Blair and Serena.

You won’t find singer Louis Epstein playing the pipe or fiddle (or whatever it was the Pied Piper was playing). Instead he’s armed with a guitar and mic, but the result is the same: Jump Into The Gospel book a show and all the cool kids show up to dance and sing along. - Bowery Boogie

"Music Video that Rocks: Jump into the Gospel"

Hi everyone,

When my friend first told me to check out Jump into the Gospel, I thought they sounded like some sort of quirky, religious rock band. As it turns out, they’re a just regular ole’ pop/rock band with a great sound and an animated music video that rocks!

Check it out:

I think one of the reasons why I adore this music video, is that it immediately reminded me of the cartoons and animated shorts I used to be obsessed with as a kid. Like this cartoon by Max Fleischer called “Somewhere in Dreamland,” where two poor kids go to bed hungry and then dream of a delicious and magical land made of candy!

But even if you’re not into the whole old school, animated video thing—Jump into the Gospel and their current single “Humvee Mansion,” are definitely worth a listen.

Band members include: Ben Vescovi (guitar), Chris Stein (drums), Erik Tonnesen (keyboards), and Louis Epstein (vocals). Want to know more? Click HERE to visit the band's website and HERE to snag a copy of their self-titled EP on iTunes.

So what do you think of their music video? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Peace, Love and Sparkles,

"Jump into the Gospel at Pianos"

Most bands that have residencies at clubs are on the path to making it big. Club owners know that hot young acts will draw in new customers every week and it’s just a matter of time before the right person hears the band and gives the group a big break. Jump Into The Gospel, the current indie popsters holding down a residency at Pianos every Wednesday in June, are ready for just that.

Last night’s show started with some chill indie pop from Beat Radio, which did a good job warming up the crowd for Chains Of Love. With Nathalia Pizzaro and Rebecca Marie Law Gray fronting the band they sound like a modern day version of The Shangri-Las, but with more attitude.

With an aggressive Americana sound, Terror in a Western Town was quite a departure from the bands that preceded. The band opened its set with two heartfelt solo performances from frontman Matt Witte. Terror in a Western Town are reminiscent of Neil Young, but at times the songs get aggressive and are infused with a little bit of grunge. The song “Never Leave You” sounds like Young and Eddie Vedder raised a secret love child in the Southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The song is guttural throughout, peaceful at times, yet filled with rage at others.

Jump Into The Gospel may not have headlined the show, but as the crowd grew considerably it was clear it was the band people were there to see. Bathed in purple lights, the band opened with one of its more popular songs, “Humvee Mansion.” This is a great song to start the summer with. It has palpable swagger, and it’s danceable, euro pop, will get stuck in your head. With each new song the band stirred up the dance party that was unraveling. In the middle of the set, Jump Into The Gospel received great responses from fans when it broke into the spacey, synthesized new single “2012.”

The night ended with a fun, energetic set from Secret Music. This pop-punk band came out blazing with plenty of distortion and it wasn’t afraid to play a fast and loose set, but that’s what was great. After the first song the band joked around saying, “OK, this will be our last song;” and then went on to play seven or eight more. - NY Press

"Band of the Week: Jump into the Gospel"

Lower East Side electro-pop gets a shot in the arm this month with Jump Into the Gospel’s Wednesday night residency at Pianos. The good-natured fivesome churn straightforward hooks into expansive pop with an omnipresent sharp synth (it feels fresh, not ‘80s regressive), deft percussion and singer Louis Epstein’s preening David Johansen-inflected yelp. Currently performing in support of their first, self-titled EP, they play through June 29 at the Ludlow institution, as well as hit Brooklyn’s Rock Shop on Monday, June 27.

This band embodies Manhattan, all right. So we delivered our Band of the Week questionnaire to Epstein this Saturday, freeing up his bandmates (Ben Vescovi, Chris Stein, Erik Tonessen, Lakis Pavlou) to bask in the warm weekend. Epstein found his kicks in email format, as you’ll see:

What song says New York to you?
“Long Distance Call” [by Phoenix]

What artist or band?
Oh, ok, so Phoenix.

What's your greatest memory of experiencing music in NY?
I was watching Guided By Voices on the water by the West Side Highway, and they started to cover an early Pink Floyd song called “Fearless” off of an album called Meddle. Well, I knew it was off of Meddle, but my friend was like, "Whaaat?! No it's not it's off of Saucerful of Secrets!" and he said it like I didn't know anything, so we went home and looked it up and I was right. It was off of Meddle.

If you could give one album to everyone in this city - - what would it be?
Jeff Buckley's Grace... Haha...Just kidding.

What is your favorite venue to play in the city?
Well it's always more about the crowd than the venue. I'd hate to quote Steve Guttenberg again but, "My uncle had trouble carving the turkey. He complained about the sharpness of the knife. My grandma proceeded to rip the turkey apart with her own hands and throw a leg and breast on everyone's plate and said, 'There, that's Brooklyn style.'"

This is basically the brass tacks of how we deliver our songs to crowds that don't like our music.

What, or who, do you find exciting in the current New York music scene?
PBR. I think it's really helped people enjoy the scene. - NBC: Non Stop Sound

Bio

Dictionary definitions prove useful -- prophetic, even -- when listening to Hits, the New York-based synth rockers whose upcoming debut album, After Dark, is a collection of incisive scenes of the 21st century condition, set to infectious pop arrangements. Few bands ever land on a name that so aptly describes both their sound, and the effect it has on its audience. In its many iterations, the word hit denotes the following: To collide with; to affect; to perform successfully; to win. Synth lines shimmer under guitars burnished by sixty years of musical history, laced with lead singer Louis Epsteins croon on subjects broad (heartbreak) and specific (television series). Fortunately for listeners, it happens the band is just as good at making music as they are at naming it. Listeners are first struck, then dazzled, then ultimately won over.

Theyve shared the stage with artists such as Tom Tom Club, Capital Cities, MNDR, Cloud Nothings, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr, and Avril Lavigne.

"They've got enough power pop and swagger to work the MTV crowd, but still possess the magic it-factor to make any hardened hipster dance." - Virgin Mobile Live

"Sure, these upbeat tracks are guaranteed to get stuck in your head, but even though the songs might have a sugary, guilty-pleasure vibe, with music this good, you definitely don't have anything to feel guilty about." - Nylon Magazine

"A perfect recipe for radio airtime and commercial viability... their music hammers with catchiness and amplifies through snappy choruses and cheerful melodies. It's good pop" - Death + Taxes

"...Their synth-heavy, charmingly catch anthems are a religious experience, seen live." - Pop Montreal
