"Sydney Single Launch"

Equipped with a guitar and snare drum, enter Wollongong natives Hockey Dad, who in their current form are comprised of childhood sweethearts Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming. When any act sells out six consecutive shows you expect a good display; when they do it without even an official full-length release yet, you know you’re in for something impressive.

Confined within the four walls of Oxford Street’s Brighton Up Bar, the duo well and truly stepped up to the plate, offering ‘Lull City’ as a bold introductory with ‘Beach House’ following its tail. The boys continued to build on their brand of unaffected ’70s slacker rock instilled with infectious harmonies and classically curated surf-pop power chords. There’s something crisp and easy to listen to in their lo-fi method that would feel suited to a muddy festival field with a crowd flapping in unison, accompanied by the occasional surfer passing above.

Effortlessly melding both recognisable and new tracks into their repertoire, Stephenson’s charisma and vocal duties teamed with Fleming’s persistent steadfast synchronised drumbeats is what gave Hockey Dad their backbone. ‘I Need A Woman’ held water above the rest; they had the crowd sitting in the palm of their very hands, lapping up every note, elevated vocal and guitar riff that oozed from the stage.

Perhaps this is what made it so jovial – how quickly what Hockey Dad eject can get under your skin and swim firmly through your veins. When you catch something right on the brink, right at the start and it still feels abundant – well that’s your ticket. - The Brag

"Irish Times Review"

The Australian new band gold rush continues with this hairy, scruffy fun-time duo from Illawarra in New South Wales. We’re digging Hockey Dad’s bodacious surf-tastic guitar riffs and sunnysideup bravado this weather and especially new release “Can’t Have Them”, which is radio-friendly rock’n'roll with the bang of summer festival stages off it. Hit! - Irish Times

Bio

"They manage to craft something full of undeniable swagger and confidence." - I OH YOU

“... their catchy melodies and huge choruses just beg for a massive festival crowd..." - The Music.

For two childhood friends from a small coastal town in Australia, Hockey Dad has come a long way in their relatively short existence.

Growing up on the stages of small bars in Wollongong since mid-2013, the duo of Zach Stephenson (guitar/vocals) and Billy Fleming (drums) began to grow their following outside their home city with the release of their debut EP "Dreamin" in June 2014.

"Dreamin" was produced by Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads) and remains the first release for newly formed Leisure Coast label Farmer & The Owl. "I Need A Woman", the lead single from the five-track EP, earned the band rotation on Triple J and FBi Radio as well as plenty of love across the web. In the US it peaked at #77 on the CMJ 200, and charted at #23 on the FMQB Sub-Modern charts.

Growing interest in the band led to national tours alongside the likes of DZ Deathrays, Bass Drum Of Death and Bad//Dreems, and they were named the winners of Triple J’s Unearthed competition, landing them a spot on Byron Bay’s prestigious Falls Music & Arts Festival over the new year.

"Can’t Have Them" is the brand new single from Hockey Dad, in which they have just completed a national tour across Australia to launch, selling out all eight shows.

In Australia, the band have signed a booking-agency deal with Village Sounds (Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy, Violent Soho, DMAs) and distribution deal with Inertia (Australian home of Sub Pop, JAGJAGUWAR, XL and many more). The duo are now looking to expand their reach beyond their home country with their debut album release in mid 2016. Following their recent performance at CMJ in New York, the band has just signed with Kanine Records (Surfer Blood, Grizzly Bear, Chairlift) for the release of the album in the USA.
