"Miss You Single Launch Review"

There was a lot of hype leading up to the much anticipated launch of "Miss You", the latest single from the bubbly Mr. Hogan & his Death by Sexy band: Connor Dillon on guitar; Johnny Westman on bass & Ronan Nolan on the drums. Last Friday night in at 10.00pm saw the culmination of all the leaflet advertisement, media promotion, sound checking & I'm sure endless hours of practice when a hoard of enthusiastic fans descended upon Loughrey's bar for their latest injection of "sexy" music. With Darren Cahill & Wayne Brereton on sound & lighting the show was ready to commence!

To whet the appetites, the boys provided the audience with a little treat in a cleverly (& for free) made video of "Miss You". So with the curiosity piqued and expectancy at fever pitch the time was ripe for the band to make their grand entrance to a very fervent & raucous welcome. I've described his influences and songs before so unless you've been living underground for the past year, I'm not going to go into too much detail suffice to say that the band's performance was filled with all the relentless energy; refreshing enthusiasm & unique musical styles that is becoming increasingly synonymous with a Mark Hogan gig.

When it came to the standout songs, all the usual suspects were involved such as "I don't know"; "Here I Go Again"; "I'm bringing Sexy Back"; "I'm Gonna" and the reason for the night: the beautiful "I Miss You", a hugely thoughtful & reflective ballad from the boys dealing with the feelings arising from the untimely loss of a very close friend of Mark's. Her passing drove Mark to pen this song and as shared by him in an interview a couple of weeks in this paper, proved to be extremely cathartic & therapeutic for the young singer. Oh how could I forget a rip-roaring version of a Kings of Leon hit called "My Party" & what could be their next single "I Want You" which closed off the night.

Having reviewed Mark Hogan on a number of occasions, one would think that I would have gotten tired of writing about and run out of superlatives to describe his irresistibly indefinable blend of music. And others would accuse me of being a bit biased towards them but then again it's hard not to be when you seem them in their element performing live, despite the slightly cramped settings of the venue.

Whether it's the "King of Sexy" himself frenetically bouncing up and down on the stage rattling off verses at a mile a minute; Connor Dillon jumping up on top of the bar to rattle off one of his guitar solos; Mr. Westman climbing on top of some of the 6 foot speakers to pound out the bass rhythm or Mr. "Sweatbox", Ronan Nolan pumping up such a sweat beating on those drums that you'd he just run 5 miles on the treadmill, it's hard to resist being killed by the pure sexiness of it all. We miss you already boys!!
