"Right after Mount came HOKUSAI, another drums-and-guitar duo, not the last of the night either. The frontman here is a guy named Lorry Valentini, who plays drums in Mercy Mercy and The Success of Satan right, and he used to front The Bad Vibes. Having seen both of the above and detected distinct bluesy, crunchy garage vibes in each, I expected similar from Hokusai; yet the sounds here were quite a departure, dude. Deeply melodic, complex songs recalling the more sensitive moments of grunge and 90’s alternative rock – underpinned by washes of wide martian tremelo, liquid harmonic waves and luminous wisps of feedback.
