"My Gold Mask, Holidae and Max Justus @ recordBar"

This weekend will be full of great concerts. It seems every venue from recordBar to the Replay Lounge, from the Bottleneck to Mills Record Company have their best acts playing. One of those bills is on this Saturday at recordBar. The concert will feature local artist Max Justus, synth-wizards Holidae, and one of my favorite band’s My Gold Mask. This show is definitely not one to miss.
Max Justus mixes the Bjork-like amorphous electric meanderings with click-step beats to create smarter than average dance music. His live set, despite being a one man show, can blanket any space with its lush atmospheres. Combining this with a stage presence that is commanding but not overbearing, Max Justus puts on a show that perfectly mixes the human and computer sides of his sound. On stage, the singer and instrumentalist masterfully lets his songs breathe–creating new experiences for his listeners. Watching Max Justus perform is like watching a world come into being.

Continuing in this aesthetic, the Minneapolis duo, Holidae, creates smooth synthetic textures. Their music sounds like a mix of The Knife, Woman’s Hour, Valley Hush, and many more rolled into one. The band’s ability to layer sounds gives their songs a melancholy and otherworldly feel. Holidae’s music seems perfect for an afternoon with nothing to do or to undulate to in the dark of a bar. Judging from photos of their performances, Holidae puts on a show that will stimulate every sense–providing projections and other backing visual textures to their already brimming audio set. It will be interesting to see how all the elements of their show come together.

Ending the night will be My Gold Mask. This Chicago trio puts on some of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Whether its their singer’s dynamic stage presence, their guitarist’s technical acumen, or their drummer’s perfect pacing, My Gold Mask truly brings their audience into the world of their music. Their songs boil with an energy that vinyl can hardly contain, and that energy is released completely on stage. I saw them play recordBar a couple years ago and was absolutely blown away. The band put everything they had behind each song. Beyond their live show, My Gold Mask writes some of the most catchy music I’ve heard. Their sound has the driving tension of Depeche Mode with a punkish overtone–a feeling that translates well to the stage.

The show this Saturday will feature three fantastic acts. From Max Justus’ lush arrangements to Holidae’s dreamy electronica, to My Gold Mask’s driven pop, the show will be the perfect way to spend a fall evening because each act can command a stage. The show starts at 10pm, costs $10 (day of show), and is 18+.

"Music Forecast 10.22-10.28: Run the Jewels, Stevie Wonder, Chvrches, My Gold Mask, Janet Jackson, and Craig Finn"

My Gold Mask
Gretta Rochelle is the centerpiece of Chicago trio My Gold Mask. Her moody voice slinks and slithers around the pulsing, synth-laden 2013 album, Leave Me Midnight. Since then, My Gold Mask has released only a handful of singles — teasers for a forthcoming record, which audience members will hear more of when the group stops at RecordBar. Minneapolis electro-pop duo Holidae — led by Ashley Gold, whose singing soars above Garrett Neal's dark, syncopating tracks — opens the show, along with Kansas City's own electronic whiz kid Max Justus.
