"Hollow Jan combinates Epic-Screamo with Progressive Rock that results to a perfection which can't be reached by many Screamo bands in these days."

Let's take a large view in the DIY World..

Nothing new, most of the DIY bands are natived to Europe and America... But wait! There's one underestimated five-piece group who's domiciled in Asia. Who is it? Envy? Heaven In Her Arms? Mabye Mono? No, sorry none of these great groups are meant.

This post is up to a band which is domiciled in Korea. Yes, you've heard right, the five guys come from Korea and they play Hardcore/Screamo. But this band brings Screamo to an other dimension, their music is not just "usual Screamo", it's a creation of Screamo. But first things first.

First of all I want to introduce the band members.

Hollow Jan are:
Lim HwanTaek (Vocals)
Lee KwangJae (Guitar)
Lee SeungMin (Guitar)
Jung DongJin (Bass)
Park SangChul (Drums)

Now we come to the main thing, that is to say the posted album. "Rough Draft in Progress" is the first record which was released of Hollow Jan. With this album the five-piece group shows that they have a very mellowed sound and awesome song writing skills. Their skills have pushed them to stay away from the common Screamo that is almost played by many bands of this genre. Hollow Jan combinates Epic-Screamo with Progressive Rock that results to a perfection which can't be reached by many Screamo bands in these days.

The band has a few further releases which I'll maybe post some time in the future. - Live-Love-Scream

""Rough Draft in Progress" which has got to be one of the most phenomenal albums to ever come out of asia"

Often called Hollow January this five piece band hails from Seoul, South Korea. I JUST discovered these guys and I have to say, obtaining their music has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. They have often been compared to other asian melodramatic hardcore bands such as early Envy and Heaven In Her Arms. When I first heard them I was astounded at the similarity between them and Envy(even more astounded that Korea had a hardcore scene) I immediately picked up their newest full length called "Rough Draft in Progress" which has got to be one of the most phenomenal albums to ever come out of asia; it can be purchased here I've Come For Your Children Records. So far they've had a total of 4 albums two of which are currently unavailable in the US. One of their ep's that is not available to the US is called "Hyacinthus Orietalis of Purple" but if you go to their Myspace you can get a little taste for it. Bellow I've included a live video of the title track of the ep; watch it to see what I mean by being similar to Envy! Their Rough Draft cd is also below for dl, though I do highly recommend you grab one for yourself if you like it.

"Hollow Jan is one of the finest acts Korea has to offer."

Hollow Jan has not been mentioned on this blog since they took home the rock album category of KMA back in March, primarily because we haven't really had any news on them to post. But I know many of you want this blog to do a small feature on artists every now and then. And now that Dope has joined last.fm with a bunch of Hollow Jan songs, I spent a good part of the past couple of days listening to them while working. So I thought I should let you in on this awesomeness.

I'm not gonna write a biography, since there's a pretty good one at KoME already. But I am gonna tell you what's important: Hollow Jan is one of the finest acts Korea has to offer. I chose their first full lenght album, Rought Draft In Process as one of the best releases from late 2006-2007 for LKL, but it is also one of my favorite albums, ever. On MySpace they describe their music as "Alternative / Hardcore / Experimental", but a more accurate description I feel would be screamo vocals over post-rock instrumentals.

Now don't tell me Hollow Jan is nothing for you because you don't like screamo. I don't really care much for screamo either, but with Hollow Jan it's different. You know how with post-rock any vocals are usually more like another instrument than anything else? It's the same way with Hollow Jan. Sure, there's lyrics and all behind that screaming, but it just makes those intense parts of post-rock even more intense. And somewhat more aggressive. Those of you that listen to Envy already know what this is all about.

"HOLLOW JAN without doubt has what it takes to make a breakthrough on the international scene."

Even if the music of HOLLOW JAN is essentially "hardcore/screamo", describing the band in this way would be far too simplistic. Some of their songs and instrumentals are quite long, this combined with the numerous breaks and changes in rhythm shows that the band love progressive rock as much as they love hardcore and screamo.

And if the screaming-style vocals could rebuke someone who is not a fan of this style, it isn't soley used in a primal and souless way. On the contrary, it is used as a way to emphasize the intensity of the feelings that the band wants to share with the public through its songs that alternate between bursts of rage and moments of peace.

Often compared to the Japanese band envy, HOLLOW JAN without doubt has what it takes to make a breakthrough on the international scene.

"I haven’t heard hardcore that has this specific tone and that makes it much more special."

I was introduced to Hollow Jan through Studiolovo’s YouTube account where the band played two songs. I was amazed at the hardcore/screamo music that the band played because it reminded me so much of Japan’s Envy.

It’s difficult to accurately describe the band’s music from their 2006 full-length. It has tones of shoegaze and post-rock in the breakdown verses, taking time to present melodic tones of the vocals and instrumentals. Once the vocals start, it’s a barrage of tight and precise layered guitar rhythms and aggressive drumming. The vocals could be simply considered screaming, but in the best hardcore music, there is a emotional connection that can be found.

Rough Draft in Progress may be a lost album from a band that only recently got back together. It’s their only full-length with a single releasing prior. It’s not surprising if most people didn’t know of the album unless they were staunch fans of the genre.

I haven’t heard hardcore that has this specific tone and that makes it much more special. It may sound like a lot of noise for listeners who don’t enjoy thunderous music, but this band is amazing in their performance on the album. - KOREANINDIE.com

"This 6 song demo is one of the strongest first releases from a band that I’ve heard in a long time. Their music sounds so full and deep. You can just lay down and get lost in it."

When I first heard Hollow Jan, I thought, “What the hell?" And then I thought, “This is from Korea???" I’d heard some other Korean bands before, and they were good, don’t get me wrong, but Hollow Jan was just something else entirely. Immediate references are Envy and the whole Japanese screamo sound, but Hollow Jan is really paving their own road, creating something new and distinctly Korean. This 6 song demo is one of the strongest first releases from a band that I’ve heard in a long time. Their music sounds so full and deep. You can just lay down and get lost in it.
