Holly GoAnarchy

BandFolkPunk

My music is anarcho-feminist folk-punk. Violent Femmes gone Exile to Guyville gone radical female Bob Dylan. Listening to me will have you laughing and crying outloud while inspiring you to run for president.

Biography

I own a coffeehouse/bookstore in Flatbush, Brooklyn called Vox Pop (The Village Voice called us the best political coffeehouse in NYC in 2005). My whole life revolves around activism. I believe the most effective ways of dealing with the heinous problems in this country often involve humor, so I write humorous commentary on American culture. I make fun of everyone, most of all myself. My main influences are Ani DiFranco, The Violent Femmes, RadioHead, They Might be Giants, The Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, and Bob Dylan. When I gig I generally have the whole audience laughing and singing along. After singing "Why am I not a lesbian?" I always have people coming up to me saying, "I've thought the same thing! I can't believe you wrote a song about that!". The most rewarding part about writing and playing my songs is that people seem to relate completely, really enjoy themselves, and feel inspired to become politically active.

Lyrics

Let's Pretend

Written By: Holley Anderson

Let's Pretend like we just met in a bar
And I touched your hand as we talked about the weather
Let's pretend like we just happen to be
In English Lit 101 sitting together
Cause the weight of our lives is too much to carry all the time
Tonight let's make love like I am not yours
And you are not mine
This wedding band does not mean I'm dead
Cause I am so young and my heart is pulsing and red
And I am too full of love to mention
I am so strong but I need so much attention
I may be your wife I may be our child's mother
But lay me down honey and kiss me all over
And let's pretend like we just met in a bar
And I touched your hand as we talked about the weather
And let's pretend like we just happen to be
In English Lit 101 Sitting Together
And now I know you're my best friend
So I hope you'll understand that sometimes I need to pretend
Like things are new and things are so exciting
Breath in my incense baby and turn down the lighting
Cause I've been around a few times
And you have too
But I want to spend my whole life, falling for you
So let's pretend like we just met in a bar
And I touched your hand as we talked about the weather
And let's pretend like we just happen to be
In English Lit 101 Sitting together
It's so late at night when you tell me you're trying
Why you gotta say these hard things, you know, I can't help it I'm crying
Let's harness this energy
let's live out our fantasies
You know if only we could, baby, we got it so good
So Let's pretend like we just met in a bar and I touched your hand as we talked about the weather
let's pretend like we just happen to be
in English Lit 101 Sitting together
Cause the weight of the world is too much to carry all the time
Tonight let's make love like I am not yours and you are not mine

Why am I not a lesbian?

Written By: Holley Anderson

I picked you out of the crowd
Cause I realy liked your hair
Now we're alone in my apartment
But we're not getting anywhere
We started talking about the president
We started talking about the war
Turns out you voted for that asshole
Let me show you the door
(chorus)
But don't feel bad cause
Getting dumped is not a sin
Why oh why God am I not a lesbian?
Oh why am I not a lesbian?

The other day I got an email
From an old boyfriend whose a bum
I said it's not that you're not beautiful
You're just so dum
The word American gives you a boner
You love your truck and your gun
Too bad you're not a stoner
Then we'd have fun
(chorus)
And if I could change one thing about you, don't take offense but I'd change everything, accept what's in your pants

You're a really great kisser
Oh yeah you drive me insane
The only trouble is my body
Is attached to my brain
But let me know if you start reading books
If you get your head out of the jar
Cause I'm not sleeping with your politics
Let me call you a car
(chorus)
