Bio

For Boston MC A. Spendacash a.k.a SPNDA, writing has always been a form of stress relief, self expression and a way to deal with anger and problems in life. Writing, free form, without purpose or direction as an outlet was the foundation for SPNDA even before it took shape as rap or lyrics. Before he was an artist he was a fan with a love and interest in hip-hop music that went back to childhood rides with his parents, listening to music in the back seat.

Ever since he was a kid, his stepfather was an avid music collector whose turntables and vinyl resided next to SPNDA’S bedroom, however, being protective of his collection, the room was off-limits to the young spenda, who would sneak in when no one was home to play records, and experiment with the mixer and equipment and being careful to put everything back exactly where it came from. Through this and trips to philly to get the latest blend mixtapes, entire worlds of music were opened up from the classics like “Love TKO” by Teddy Pendergrass and Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” to foundational hip-hop and rap records like “Here we go” by Run DMC and “Senerio” by A Tribe Called Quest. From this time on music always was a big part of SPNDA’s but it took on a life of its own when he applied his writing to it.

As a young lyricist, most of his time was spent on just writing and recording music over industry beats with friends. It was not until he got a tascam 4 - track recorder for his birthday that he was able to understand and practice composing and layering lyrics and music to make songs. As he began to understand the process of writing and record better he continued to develop as a MC and writer. It was around this time he met Rah Intelligence who immediately took a liking to SPNDA’s rap and began concocting a plan that would end up changing forever the direction of spendas music. The concept was simple, Merge spenda and another MC rah knew, JuneLyfe’s lyrical styles over rahs production and push the envelope on creating a unique sound. Working with rah and june introduced spenda to the possibility of creating songs and music in ways the stream of conscious format-less raps spenda had been writing never had.

Inspired After successfully creating music and a brotherhood within Retrospek, he sought to create a conceptual project that was a complete body of work that. Obsessed with the Matrix film triology, he chose that as the base for his project, crafting an album around his reaction to the theme, ideas and concepts presented in the films. While the project was rough and its format very experimental, its completion fueled a hunger to continue to create, improve and progress.

in the following years Retrospek put out two eps and an album and shared the stage with some of the best in the game. it pushed everyone to new levels in their artistry and ambition. While the group continues to work together, the success of tackling the challenge of creating collaboratively reignited spendas passion and interest for creating music and he is currently working on solo projects and collabs with several artists, including Retro and his CCRMG family.

Spenda describes his relationship to writing and music as an ongoing process of trying to figure out how to harness his thoughts and emotions.

Originally A. Spendacash took his name form a line he created about his poor money management, “ too bad..as a spends the cash” was the line to be specific, but as he developed as a lyricist he took the moniker SPNDA, explaining simply that he is now the SPNDA because of his progression as an artist, and his ability to make you pay attention... so pay attention!
